Bush Losing the Immigration Debate
War to Mobilize Democracy, LLC ^ | May 13, 2006 | Andrew L. Jaffee

Posted on 05/13/2006 12:56:02 PM PDT by forty_years

President Bush plans to address the nation on Monday night at 8 PM to con the American public into buying into his ludicrous immigration policies. His approval ratings are at an all-time low, with only 31% of Americans approving of his job performance, while "68% believe the United States is worse off today than it was before Mr. Bush became president." Bush's immigration policies would open the floodgates to illegals, and Americans do not approve -- and it looks like the Senate agrees. Another poll shows support for the House's tough and very sensible immigration legislation, HR 4437:

...69 percent said it was a good or very good idea when told it tries to make illegals go home by fortifying the border, forcing employer verification, and encouraging greater cooperation with local law enforcement while not increasing legal immigration; 27 percent said it was a bad or very bad idea.

In an attempt to assuage American concerns about the unfettered illegal immigration tidal wave, Bush has proposed using the National Guard to patrol our borders:

President Bush, trying to build momentum for an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws, is considering plans to shore up the Mexican border with National Guard troops paid for by the federal government, according to senior administration officials.

One defense official said military leaders believe the number of troops required could range from 3,500 to 10,000, depending on the final plan.

That's a great idea, except that Bush wants to provide amnesty to the millions of illegals already present in the U.S., and he wants to allow 400,000 "guest workers" to enter the U.S. every year. This is a recipe for disaster.

There are at least 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., and 10,000 pouring into our nation every day. One study predicts there will be 5 million more Latin American immigrants in the U.S. by 2015, while another prognosticates that illegals will push the American population to 1/2 billion people by 2050. Since the U.S. government is failing dismally at stemming this unfettered tidal wave, a group of concerned citizens, the Minuteman, has tried to prevent illegal immigration, but it appears that Bush has betrayed them.

And it looks like the Republican-controlled Senate is on the verge of betraying the American people by planning to push through legislation which will implement Bush's disastrous proposals. If the Republicans are looking to retain the Senate in the 2006 elections, they may just be shooting themselves in their collective feet.

The problem with Bush and many Republicans is that they are looking at immigration solely in 2 modalities: 1) trying to court the Latino vote, and 2) looking at immigration solely in near-term economic terms.

President Bush and Mexico's President Fox are colluding in an unholy alliance. Bush wants cheap Mexican labor -- forget the problems illegals pose to American society. Fox, an arrogant racist, wants to dump his economic problems on the U.S. instead of enacting much-needed reforms in his own corrupt society. It looks like Senate Republicans have joined the alliance.

It is time for the U.S. to criminalize illegal immigration as a felony offense. We need to build a wall along the Mexico border and provide enough personnel to patrol that border. We need to make it very painful for employers who hire illegals.

Are we to sit by idly while illegal immigrants openly march through our streets, trying to intimidate our policy makers, defame our flag, and rewrite our national anthem? Complacency will lead to the end of our prosperity and democracy.

Perhaps most importantly, it is time for the Third World to start dealing with its own problems (like corruption and overpopulation), and stop trying to dump those problems on the U.S.

Take action: Support LEGAL immigration.

The schools, jails and streets in our cities and regions already dominated by migrants from Mexico might indicate otherwise.

Social norms don't just fall away when migrants cross borders. If enough of Mexico lives north of the Rio Grande, Mexico will exist there too.

That's not entirely awful, but on balance Mexico is a worse place to live than is the USA, and Americans wishing to live in Mexico should make that choice on their own. They shouldn't' be "deported in place", with Mexico dropped on their heads via unchecked population transfers from our dear southern neighbor.

How long have you lived in Indiana?

GWB has done more in a very short time to prove his Americanism and patriotism than you could hope to do in a lifetime, actually.

Not much need to read any further. Anyone who believes this crock of bull is an idiot.

"It is time for the U.S. to criminalize illegal immigration as a felony offense"

Huh? we haven't done this already?..I'd have thought that 9/11 and more than 3000 people dead in one place would have brought some thought or imagination to do this immediately from the highly intellient lawmakers (and security) that we have employed(can I say also way overpayed)in our government zoo.

I don't think they want to do this though. It is possible they'll put this off and go on to MORE IMPORTANT THINGS.It will not even cross theirs minds 30 yrs from now.
Then the dead of 9/11 and other terrorist acts in the future will be called "Collateral Damage" of their plan they really want to see accomplished.

There is a civil war brewing in the imaginative little heads of the far right anti-immigrationists.

Nobody else seems to be riled up at all.

"It's not immigration, it's migration. The indigenous peoples of this continent do not recognize borders invented by white Europeans. They are simply reclaiming their lands. That is the argument on the other side."

They may not want to recognize the white man's borders, but they don't mind taking advantage of all of the benefits the white man's civilization offers them.

Your opinion seem to be dwarfed by the anti-immigration sentiment. I agree with you that this is a dilemma that one way or another will cost Republican Party. In the short term, the anti-immigration argument may be good, but not for long-term. Like it or not, as long as the US opens its border for (legal) immigration, the structure of the population will change. Chances are the current (legal) migrants from Latin America will bring their family under the family reunion arrangement.

Bush is facing a big test: would he vote for short-term or long-term outlook of the party.

Legal and illegal Hispanic immigrants, end up, once eventually US citizens, voting, by strong majority, Democratic.

The same is true for immigrants from most sources - the exception being Europe, and certainly by the second generation, I'd wager most European-immigrant heritage voters are voting in patterns nearly identical to native white voters, that is to say, slightly Republican.

After all, Poles, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, etc will not be voting for various ethnic grievance schemes (aka the Democrat platform) three or four generations after arrival.

Remember too that the stock market lost a trillion dollars in the 2002 crash. So if you say the economy is worse off since Bush took office, on the face of it, its correct.

The article is excessive in parts.

But hold off until he speaks? No, cannot do that in good conscience.

The administration is floating trial balloons to guage reaction before Monday night's speech. If people are reserved in judgement or even silent, the administration would assume, if not completely onboard, that folks are not outright hostile to what has been leaked.

NG is good, but it's nowehere near enough. And continuing to push amnesty/Guest worker before the problem of securing the border is addressed is absurd. And continues to lead people to believe their suspicions are correct. That it is a feint to the right just long enough to shove the rest down our throat. They don't have the trust on the people on this issue. They have to earn it before we talk of what to do beyond enforcing the border.

Given the choice, wouldn't you prefer to alert the administration to an oncoming trainwreck...rather than tell witnesses to that train wreck afterwards you saw it coming and said nothing? He may still step in front of that train, but at least it'll be suicide rather then being unaware it was heading right towards him. Implying a choice in the matter.

You can argue politics but you cannot argue demographics. The Baby boomers are past child bearing years and will be out of the workforce starting in the next 2 years. The boomers did not breed enough for even replacement population and their kids are even less likely to have children. Our "culture" IS changing, illegal immigration or not. Those are the facts and unlike opinions, which everyone is entitled to, no one is entitled to their own facts.

I agree it would be interesting to see those statistics. But I think you're incorrect in assuming that legal hispanic immigrants would somehow be driven into the arms of the Dems if the Republicans insisted, and actually meticulously enforced, the laws already on the books.

As I pointed out, I think on this thread, entering this country illegally a second time is already a Felony punishable by 2 years in prison. It's also a felony to knowingly use fraudulent documents to illegally gain employment in the US. It's also a felony to knowingly employ those who are in this country illegally.

Look this whole argument is specious. We have laws on the books, they just need to be enforced. And not just in the time before an election, but consistently 24-7-365.

We're either a nation of laws or we're a nation ruled by the mobs in the streets. If 500,000 drug dealers marched in the streets loudly demanding their 'rights' to deal drugs while actually possessing those drugs would you consider giving in to them?

Hell no. You'd demand that the cops get off their backsides and start making some arrests and that prosecutors start prosecuting and judges and juries start convicting.

The last amnesty in '86 was supposed to 'fix' this problem. Well it didn't. It may in fact have made it worse. But that's an argument for another day.

What is clear is that the amnesty scheme Reagan signed off on failed and there are now nearly 20 million people residing here illegally demanding their 'rights'. I say we give them their 'rights'. Namely their rights to a speedy deportation hearing and a free bus or plane ride back to their country of origin and I don't care if that country was Mexico, Guatemala, Luxuembourg, Belgium, or Norway.

Let them return to where they came from and apply for citizenship and work permits in the manner already specified in US law. Anything less is a slap in the face to the roughly 1.25 million people who gain US citizenship annually in a lawful manner.

Yep. Stem the tide first. Then enact a strict assimiliation program. LEARN ENGLISH, no welfare benefits after six months, emergency servcices only, anything else they pay for like the rest of us, no voting, and holding public offices, photo IDS for all, and limit money transfers to 50 dollars. This would be a good start. Half of them will be unable to meet these requirements, and will be forced to leave..

I still think Bush is the master of the rope-a-dope and he'll pull it off one more time.

In order to do, he'd have to:
(1) order the IRS/SS Admin to immediately make their database available for SSN validity checking;
(2) send a joint letter from the IRS/Justice/Labor Depts to millions of small businesses warning them of ramped up audits & prosecution for failure to use #1; and
(3)and most importantly, start issuing no-bid contracts to Haliburton (kidding), et al to begin immediate construction of a wall.

Bush has proved himself capable of making overnight decisions with regards to the W0T - he took much more draconian measures with Iraq. Anything less in response to the southern invasion tells us everything we need to know about where he stands on the issue of illegal aliens.

Will a fully merged USA-Mexico give you the result you want?

I know what you mean, man.

There's more. Central America wants in on it too.

Here's the low-down. Word has come down from high up that our sovereign border will extend down to the upper end of Panama.

What's up with that?

This writer completely ignored what the House might do and seemed to imply it's a done deal. They might roll over and let the Senate scamnesty through but I doubt it. At the very least you'll never see the type of full blown liberal giveaway Frist and Reid are attempting.

IIRC, the Dems in the house were responsible for keeping the criminalization wording in the bill -- to stir up a hornet's nest for illegals, and their enablers, to protest against.

It worked.

Neither side of the House was serious about criminalization, and I don't think you'll find popular support for it.

OTOH, if the POTUS can't come up with some demonstrably serious plan for closing/heavily guarding/drastically limiting illegal border crossing, nothing else is going to matter.

And I do hope his speechwriters have the sense to leave the sloganator at home. By now, "Jobs Americans don't want" -- whether valid or not -- has become the proverbial red flag before the bull.
