On Wednesday, a former government spokesman said black visitors to Germany should be careful where they go in the country. His remarks have drawn criticism -- and support.
It doesn't take much to try Germany's patience in the weeks leading up to the World Cup soccer championships. Nerves are especially raw when it comes to comments and incidents that cast doubt on the country's hospitality and its openness to the millions of international guests expected to descend on the country in June. On Wednesday and Thursday, that sensitivity was laid bare for all to see.
A former government spokesman on Wednesday suggested that dark-skinned visitors to Germany should consider avoiding the eastern part of the country where racism runs high. "There are small and medium-sized towns in Brandenburg, as well as elsewhere, which I would advise a visitor of another skin colour to avoid going to," said Uwe-Karsten Heye, who now leads an anti-racism organization called "Show Your Color." "It is possible he wouldn't get out alive."
Former government spokesman Uwe-Karsten Heye says some parts of Germany are dangerous for foreigners.

Thank God the German justice is starting to deal with those new racists the hard way. The lawsuit of two men who had beaten up a black man (he is in danger to die) in Potsdam is now investigated by the federal attorney general. In difference to some simular cases where the east German authorities managed to do "something" for their "local heroes" it is -in this spechial case- not possible anymore. A good sign.
Anyway there is still a lot to be done in the German east.
Eastern Europe ping!
Which political party (parties) do these thugs support? My experience here in New Zealand is that it is not necessarily a political left will be more internationalist. I know plenty of centre-left or outright leftists in this country that are extremely nationalist.
Hmmm. . . . national socialism perhaps?
Germans? Hospitable??
I'm sure we return the favor here.
German racists?
Who'd a thunk it?
No parties out of the "democratic" spectrum. There are the "NPD" (a pure nazi pary), the "DVU" (also nazis but more for the "elderly") and maybe the "Republikaner" (not to mix with the Republicans in the US - also a dumb nationalist and populist party - it is a shame that they can misuse this name).
Personally I would put them into a nice little working camp (no KZ but something "uncomfortable") to give them some reason for their existance again. Leonardo da Vinci said about such people, that all that will be left of them are some filled *hitholes.
These guys still remain a small minority of isoltated individuals. Nevertheless, as you point out, it is good that the police are getting a handle on it.
If it weren't for the straightjacket of socialism that has kept them unemployed this probably wouldn't be the problem that it is.
Like any group of marginalized natives, they lash out at those different from them.
I appreciated the remarks made by Heye because they started an overdue national debate about a problem that has mostly been solves in the West, but still festers in the East.
This is indeed true. Anyway since they are concentrated in some places in east Germany they are a real danger.
Nevertheless, as you point out, it is good that the police are getting a handle on it.
Their a**es have to be kicked with all means.

I share your view. I has to become clear that this is a east German problem. I am fed up to be mixed with such scum due to the political correctness.
I rather suspect women, Jews and lone Americns should not wander into Turkish parts of the cities. Doubt they'll make that warning.
'Even the mainstream centre-left and centre-right will be suffice. I have met newspaper pundits and university academics who are Labour supporters here, and businesspeople or economist who are National party base. In most cases the Labour supporters are far more chauvinistic - and more intolerant towards "foreigners" who eat different food or don't watch rugby/cricket.'
What's that got to do with no go zones in eastern Germany? Do your labour friends favour the swastika and have a tendancy to kill black people who visit their town?
You are right.
Hmm! I thought racism was only present in the U.S.
I wonder what happened. /s

Hmmm. . . . last time you had high unemployment, it was solved by electing a right-wing leader. His early success was somewhat overshadowed by the end of his career that left germany a pile of rubble, six million jews murdered like cattle and your country split between the US/UK allies and the Soviet Union. Perhaps it would be wise to not go quite so far to the right to reduce the jobless numbers this time. . .
should stay out of Turkish neighborhoods alone, being a triple threat. She should also stay out of mine.
Your comment is absurd and shows a very limited view of history.
Go back to the DU.
What I'm saying is that the conventionally accepted "common sense" like "racism is an extension of nationalism, which only occurs from the Right" is false i.e. don't assume these people are racist so that they must be far-right. They could well be Linkeparti supporters.
