IMHO, the key to this is understanding what may pass for theology in the Shi'a mind.

Given the basic Shi'a philosophy, they have formed in their minds, a murder-suicide pact with the West. But it is a pact with a twist: they absolutely want us to murder them, and all the rest of Islam. It will be the end, they're hoping, of all of us. The world would end.

This Armageddon will present Allah the All-Merciful with a purified world, ready for the next creation, an all-Islamic creation. This will also purify Islam, because they reason, ALL Muslims will give their lives for Allah and thus gain entry to Paradise. They would be saved with the Infidels as their slaves in Paradise for all eternity. There is no better outcome. Shi'a absolutely demands and glorifies suffering and sacrifice. Suicide, taking as many Infidels with one as possible, is the highest possible good. Ahmadinejad is merely following Shi'a theology to what he, and his teachers, think is its logical end.

I think a likely scenario might be for Iran to launch a massive missile attack on Israel using Hezbollah and Hamas, and force US military strikes on Iran before we are ready with hopes (on their part) that the UN will then step in and negotiate security guarantees for Iran (to "keep another world war from starting" will be the argument).

This would be one of the worst possible outcomes for the West and unfortunately Ahmadinejad can play these cards whenever he wants.

US efforts with the UNSC don't seem to take into account

It wouldn't be a question of being ready. The US can begin anytime. The reason the US has not begun is that war is traditionally something the US responds to rather than initiates and the US will wait until Iran starts. The policy of preemption as stated by the US is not going to be implemented unless Iran makes obvious moves such as massing on the border.

Of course we can bomb them at any time.

But the US knows this is exactly what Ahmadinejad wants, as I mentioned earlier. The US is not ready to deal with all the likely responses to such an attack. I am referring not only to military issues involved but political and economic. There are many possible scenarios and many are very dangerous.

The US is not interested in starting something when it is not confident of the outcome.

Again, the most dangerous element here is that Ahmadinejad can change the equation at any time through its proxies around the world.

Economics is probably the best reason to not start something unless dire necessity. Politics is always part of everything, and if Iran attacks, politics will suddenly shift for war and economics will take a tremendous hit if the war isn't concluded quickly.

Has somebody nuked Tel Aviv? No?

You're right. I mean just because Admadinejad has basically told the world that Israel would be nuked, that's no reason to take him seriously. It's not like he's the psychopathic mother of all suicidal Jihad lunatics or anything. Besides, he's said the nuclear program is just for peaceful purposes anyway.

So I guess it's OK if he gets nukes or nuclear material that can be conveyed to his Jihadist terrorists contacts around the world.

So maybe the prudent thing would be to wait until he nukes Tel Aviv before we take military action.

I mean, if we attacked militarily before he was ready for us, it might make him REALLY angry and then we'd be in REAL trouble.

Gee, I wish I had the counsel of someone more nuanced than I, so I could decide what I think our policy should be.

You are a nice person. Beware false prophets, the anti-christ is working diligently behind the scenes right now. The american indians have an old prophecy : when men begin to build a city in the sky, then the end will come : International Space Station. Why do 200 million chinese invade the middle east as mentioned in the Book of Revelation? To lap up the last dregs of OIL. Their economy is exploding(300 million cars)and they are already all over the world, getting their hands on as many energy supplies as they can : athabasca tar sands in canada, uranium in australia, driving out occidental petroleum in ecuador w/bribes, drilling for oil in kenya...china is becoming one huge, voracious MOUTH demanding to be fed = malthusian corrections = war, disease, famine = armageddon. e-mail me and I'll tell you how the rapture is done.

The "West" no longer exists as a power. It is the few, moral, free nations, including Japan and India that matter. Forget about the west.

Russia and China are using this clown - they can yank our chains through him without having to risk a direct confrontation with the US military. If we topple him, they'll find another one - probably Chavez. The Cold War is back on, it seems.

It might be interesting to know what the policy actually is. The White House has always been sparce on public words when it comes to major international policy, and that is not just a characteristic of the present Pres.
