HILL DRIVE FOR '55' ( National Maximum Speed Limit )
New York Post ^ | May 24, 2006 | IAN BISHOP

Posted on 05/24/2006 3:25:12 PM PDT by george76

- In a surprise move yesterday, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "most of the country" to return to a speed limit of 55 mph in an effort to slash fuel consumption...

"The 55-mile speed limit really does lower gas usage.

And wherever it can be required, and the people will accept it, we ought to do it," Clinton said at the National Press Club.

Maybe we should all put that crummy plastic over our windows that you can't see out of. 55 MPH could lose her California, what a Maroon!

Pray for W and Our Troops

Nixon did this because of the oil embargo by opec. My sister learned to drive in a gas line. People were claiming all sorts of crazy stuff about how the gas shortage would cause all just about everything to be in short supply. A joke on Johnny Carson cause a run in stores on toilet paper Some stores sold out for a while.

Maybe she should start with Al Gore:

Bush won 2004 not because of his stellar leadership, but because Americans weren't quite ready to throw control of the nation over to utterly insane control freak clowns. You've just gotten a sneak preview of what Democrats will say when they start opening their mouths & going on the offensive. In 3 months, when the doors to the looney bin have been thrown open & the Democrats are speaking publicly again, plenty of Freepers will be scratching their heads wondering how in the world they could have considered staying home in November.

55mph is what our vehicles slow down to at a yield sign.

Well, I lived in west Texas during the "Carter 55mph" period. Everyone still drove 75 to 80mph and had their "ears on" wide open talking constantly with truckers and such. Actually, it was kinda fun and kept one alert for sure. Does anyone remember their handle from those days? I remember mine but ain't tell'n. Seriously though, these kind of remarks are great and I hope Ms Clinton continues making them. I have heard it said that she has a "lead ear" when it come to reading the wind in politics. I sure hope that's true!

I think it's been proved over and over that most modern cars get the best mileage between 65-75MPH.

This worked out so well for Jimmy !

It worked out so well for Nader too, whose idea it was to make '55' the national speed limit back in the 1970's.

I'm praying she makes "Drive 55" a key propaganda point

I moved out to New Mexico last year, I didn't realize that the stated speed on the highways is 75 MPH. Of course, if you go 75, you will get run off the road by all those doing 90+.

In Phoenix on the freeway's the speed limit is 75, yet the steady flow of traffic flows around 80 to 85 MPH. The cops just nab the lane jumpers.

I live in Montana, and in Montana there's a lot of dirt between light bulbs...

I remember when Montana went with the "safe and prudent" approach when it dropped the speed limit altogether, and highway fatalities actually decreased. Ever since they posted speed limits back up, highway fatalities have gone back up.

The limit in Montana was "Reasonable and prudent" Sunny day, good car, dry road, and no traffic, you decide.

Some nitwit in an exotic car decided that meant they could go 60-70 mph faster than the convoy of 'runamuckas' they were weaving through, and ended up suing the State when they got a ticket because the statute was (as they claimed and the court upheld) "unconstitutionally vague".

Now drivers there are limited to 75 on the interstates...You used to be able to do 120 and not get a ticket, if the road and the car were right.

Look out in Missoula though, they have a fleet of unmarked black Lambourghini Highway Patrol cars. :)

I remember seeing a police car near Carlin, Nevada once--I didn't get a good enough look to see what kind it was (aside from a police car), but I was doing 70 down the interstate and he passed me like I was standing still...Some guys get all the nice toys.

Wasn't it Carter that implemented conservation plans like the 55 mph speed limit and the the paper conservation plan to "use both sides of the paper when you wipe" plan.

Carter's plan was to have everyone turn way down their thermostats in the winter and wear two layers of clothing. Nader fought and won the imposition of the 55 MPH speed limit during the Nixon administration, back when democrats controlled both houses of Congress. Ironically enough, it was repealed in 1995, by then-president Bill Clinton.

Hey, I live in the mountains. 40 MPH is pushing it on most portions of the Rim of the World Highway.

The speed limit on the "Going To The Sun Highway" over the Continental Divide in Glacier Park, which is actually part of US-2 is 40 MPH also.

It is bad again for Hillary to try to re-start the 55 mph idea.

It is bad, and I hope she continues to run with this idea.

The DST thing was, and is, stupid. 8-year-old kids at the bus stops 2 hours before sunrise.

Actually it's the other way around. The sunrise here at this time of year is around 5:00am. It's still light out at 10:00pm.
