The Tempest: A handful of skeptics maintain that Global Warming is a hoax
Washington Post ^ | May 28, 2006 | Joel Aschenbach

IT SHOULD BE GLORIOUS TO BE BILL GRAY, professor emeritus. He is often called the World's Most Famous Hurricane Expert. He's the guy who, every year, predicts the number of hurricanes that will form during the coming tropical storm season. He works on a country road leading into the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, in the atmospheric science department of Colorado State University. He's mentored dozens of scientists. By rights, Bill Gray should be in deep clover pausing only to collect the occasional lifetime achievement award.

He's a towering figure in his profession and in person. He's 6 feet 5 inches tall, handsome, with blue eyes and white hair combed straight back. He's still lanky, like the baseball player he used to be back at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington in the 1940s. When he wears a suit, a dark shirt and tinted sunglasses, you can imagine him as a casino owner or a Hollywood mogul. In a room jammed with scientists, you'd probably notice him first.

He's loud. His personality threatens to spill into the hallway and onto the chaparral. He can be very charming.

But he's also angry. He's outraged.

He recently had a public shouting match with one of his former students. It went on for 45 minutes.

He was supposed to debate another scientist at a weather conference, but the organizer found him to be too obstreperous, and disinvited him.

Much of his government funding has dried up. He has had to put his own money, more than $100,000, into keeping his research going. He feels intellectually abandoned. If none of his colleagues comes to his funeral, he says, that'll be evidence that he had the courage to say what they were afraid to admit.

Which is this: Global warming is a hoax.

Look, pollution is bad and ought to be avoided in the interest of common health. We need to be good stewards of the earth and our resources, but to for anyone to assume that man is so powerful as to be able to change the climate of the planet God gave us in 200 years is simply pompous and tantamount to idolatry. Al Gore and his ilk are nothing but modern day Druids who propogate belief in fairy tales in order to scare their followers into giving them power.

Fact is, this admission is a MAJOR departure from all of the previous PROPAGANDA that virtually Every Scientist on the Face of the Planet Agrees that Global Warming is a Major Issue...  Progress is obviously being made against the Enviro-FRAUD!

It's time Americans understood that the REAL agenda behind the Enviro "Greens" is to attack, and to control American business and Industry.  To completely DESTROY the American Economy...

Great article.

I think most of us see global warming as FUD by those seeking greater control of our lives and resources -- i.e. wealth, prestige and power for themselves without doing any real work, sorta like the scientists in Atlas Shrugged.

Now, I've said this before but we should go along with them just a bit, advocating plans that inarguably cut CO2 but affect causes they generally considered untouchable..

This actually seems to be working with nukes.

Another one would be breaking the bottlenecks at the West Coast ports, which would also break the extreme left unions that control them, and of course cutt CO2 and SAVE OUR CHILDREN lol.

Another would be exempting home offices of telecomunters from OSHA regs and indemnifying businesses from lawsuits caused by accidents at the homes of employees telecommuting. Granted the Dem trial lawyers won't like it but we must encourage telecommuting to cut CO2 emissions and SAVE OUR CHILDREN!!!

You get the point.

And you know what? A sincere believer in global warming will support these things without compromise. If the left refuses, I guess global warming isn't such a big deal LOL.

The wannabe Marxists are continually searching for reasons to attack capitalism...

Thats b/c Marxism thrives --no, scratch that-- Marxism requires crisis. Any kind will do: global warming, cooling, acid rain, ozone hole, overpopulation, energy dependence, water pollution, air pollution, snail darters, spotted owls...you name. It's all grist to their mill.

Case in point: Everyone reading this knows that the last thing leftists/liberals/environmentalists would ever want is for someone to come up with a safe, cheap, nonpolluting, endlessly renewable source of energy readily available to one and all.

Bottom line: Global warming is NOT a hoax. That man's activities cause it or are making it greater IS a hoax and a lie. Spread the word, y'all. We ain't doing it.

Sorry, but global warming is a hoaz, the warming stopped in 1998, but of course is never mentioned. Not that the world hasn't warmed up some from the last ice age and, more recently, from the mini ice age that ended about 1850, but as of right now it is not warming. The warming it did in the 20th century was miniscule and never posed any threat to the planet.

On the other hand you are entirely correct about it not being man made, warming trends and ice ages are common in our past and there is no reason to assume they will not be common in our future.

Global warming is not a hoax. It is yet another avenue being pursued to destroy western civilization.

A hoax is usually a playful attempt to gain advantage; the global warming movers are vindictive of free peoples and demonstrate malice aforethought with every new resolution or law they jam through deliberative bodies.

They have neutered ability to expand energy production and now only wait as increasing populations and demand bring the western democratic nations to chaos and tyranny.

Never hear a word from Gore about natural CO2 producers like volcanoes. We have large levels of activity and lots of gasses.

What I would like Him to address is that if we don't do something quickly, we could have the same kind of thing here as happened with the global warming on Mars. There's just one small bit of ice cap left there. We don't want the same thing happening here.

I think one of the most intriguing critiques I've heard about the entire global warming phenomenon is the one that views it in light of society's move from a traditionally religious base towards that of increased secularization.

The need for feeling part of something eternal, greater than one's self remains, however, and in the place of religion the worship of "environmentalism" has arisen.

It mimics, almost exactly, the structure of traditional religions.

There was a time of Paradise call preindustrialization.

Then came a fall from grace, an expulsion from the garden called the rise of carbon based society.

Finally, there will be peace in Heaven when we achieve an idyllic state called "sustainability."

It's interesting that in those countries where people have fled from church attendance, Western Europe for example, are precisely those countries where the cult of environmentalism is most popular.

There's an image of an impoverished woman hacking the ground with a hand tool. "The fuels that produce CO2 have freed us from a life of backbreaking labor."

The anti global warming regime will allow vaguely defined institutions to control national economies. One more step in eradicating national sovereignty.

LLS,
Thank you.
I will continue to vote R not because I'm convinced they can save the Country-but that they will lose it more slowly.

All those Chicken Littles are being paid, to push the "global warming" issue down our throats. Each one, to me, is a self-serving hack.

If you have no other talent, be a pitch man. The one that can cure all your ills, if you just follow his advice. This is the same old story, only on a much grander scale.

Good point.

I think it's because when they cast aside God a vacuum ocurred that they've attempted to fill through "science" so when a person acquires the right set of credentials he becomes basically a priest and when he speaks in the name of "science" he may not be doubted.

Look, pollution is bad ...

Okay, but just what is 'pollution'?

Can animals pollute? You know, like a whale going potty in the ocean or a duck relieving himself as he flies over the trees?

Can nature pollute? Or is pollution only something mankind can do?

If so has mankind always been a polluter? Or only since the Industrial Revolution?

Do non-Cauasian pollute? You know, like primitive tribes in Burko Faso, or the Amazon-- do they pollute?

And if pollution is (chiefly) man made then how can there ever be an end to it?

Who decides what is 'pollution'? Who decides who decides?

Are you serious? There is a huge difference between doing an imperical study on the affects of levels of arsenic in drinking water over a period of time to determine what the standard ought to be and what Clinton did, which was to arbitrarily lower the reporting limit on Arsenic in his waning days to placate his nut-job base who are scared of the word "arsenic".

The hard part at this point is to re-instate the Scientific Method and get rid of the preconceived dotions of the baby boomer "scientists".

Congress should pass a law to stop volcanoes from polluting the atmosphere with CO2, but probably the Democrats are embarrassed by the fact that Mt St Helens erupted during a Democratic administration.

If you look at the deadliest eruptions of the past 152 years (since the formation of the Republican Party), the deadliest eruptions were always during Republican administrations: Krakatoa, Dutch East Indies, in 1883 (36,000 dead), Mt. Pelee, Martinique, in 1902 (28,000 dead), Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia, in 1985 (23,000 dead). Clearly this is no coincidence.

What's his hurricane prediction record of rights and misses? That more important than obstreperousness.

And he's right about the Democrat pet, global smarming.
