Defense lawyers say there was no cruelty to animals
New developments in an animal cruelty case Nine on Your Side has been following for nearly a year.
It involves two employees of PETA--People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals--charged with euthanizing dozens of animals and dumping them into a dumpster in Ahoskie last June.
On Wednesday, prosecution and defense lawyers appeared before a judge in Hertford County for pre-trial motions.
Three detectives gave detailed testimony about what happened the day they arrested Adria Hinkle and Andrew Cook.
Detective Sgt. Jeremy Roberts told the court that during surveillance last June, he watched them pull up to the dumpster and toss several bags of dead animals inside. Then he arrested them.
Roberts says he found more dead animals in the van, a digital camera with pictures of living and dead animals and vials of substances later determined to be drugs used to euthanize animals.
"We remain confident as we have from the beginning that Ms. Hinkle and Mr. Cook will be acquitted of the charges," said Jeff Kerr, general counsel for the PETA organization.
The defense asked the judge to dismiss the felony animal cruelty charges because the animals were euthanized in a humane manner.
They also argued that Hinkle and Cook are being prosecuted because they are affiliated with a controversial organization.
But the judge denied the motion to dismiss.
This was a very standard part of the trial process where various motions are made by both sides generally in an effort to get a better understanding of where each side is coming from in the case, Kerr said.
Both sides are now gearing up for the actual trial. But that date has not yet been set. District Attorney Valerie Asbell declined an on-camera interview until after the trial.
PETA lawyer Jeff Kerr says it is a difficult time for Hinkle and Cook.
He would not comment on whether the two are still employed by PETA.
Hinkle and Cook were indicted in October. They are each charged with 21 felony counts of animal cruelty, three counts of obtaining property by false pretenses, and seven counts of littering for illegally disposing of dead animals in a private dumpster.
PETA == People Executing The Animals.
I hope they get hammered. I'd like the congress of the US to see what happens when you break the law!
I don't get what they were trying to do. Were they offering to kill people's unwanted animals for them? They would then be practicing veterinary medicine without a licence, but not necessarily being cruel to the animals. On the other hand, they are busted for improper disposal of dead animals.
PETA workers face 25 felony counts in North Carolina [more on PETA in dumpster]
"The cats and dogs two PETA employees have been charged with euthanizing and dumping in an Ahoskie garbage bin were killed by injections of pentobarbital, a barbiturate commonly used to put down animals, according to new warrants issued and served on Friday.
"Additionally, the two employees were charged with three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. The charges allege that they euthanized three cats from an Ahoskie veterinarian after promising to find the animals new homes, according to the new warrants."
These wacked out lefties look at animal ownership as so bourgeoisie, that it's better to kill the critters.
I can tell you what they do/try to do:
PETA is an organization that raises millions of dollars annually to further their mission that animals should have as many, or more, rights than humans, and these should not be used for food, clothing, medical research, companionship, etc.
They claim animals never can be killed/harvested by hunters (even if the animals are overpopulated and starving to death slowly/painfully), evil agricultural interests (the ones that grow and produce the food you eat)medical researchers (who develop cures/treatments for diseases like birth defects, diabetes, and diseases vets treat sick pets/animals for, circuses, or zoos, which are keeping various species that are endangered from extinction.
They use NONE of their money to feed, house, neuter, spay, or help the trillions of domestic (or other kinds)animals that overpopulate the world. They do nothing for animals (but kill a few hundred a year, the leftover animals from their save the animals campaigns).
Their members use the money raised to draw fulltime salaries and to send out propaganda to schools and other
areas, inciting them to hate, and attack fast food restaurants, private landowners who raise animals, research facilities, little old ladies who wear fur coats, etc.
They often send airheaded blond actresses with fake body parts (boobs, lips, etc.) out on the streets in front of movie and TV cameras to plead their cases -- and to RAISE MORE MONEY from dummies who believe anything they read or see on TV.
They provide funds for domestic terrorists who firebomb private businesses and state/federal universities, research facilities, etc., have often been the spokesman for these shady characters that commit these acts, and applaud this criminal activity.
ALL IN THE NAME OF SAVING THE ANIMALS. But, they SAVE no animals.
That's a start, want to know more? There's plenty of proof out there, on the net.
Time to start injecting these @ssholes to see if the chemicals are truly effective.
PETA is a lot like Islam. A small group of corrupt and cynical people who figured out how to get a nice lifestyle for themselves by using the stupid and the insane.
I haven't been following this. Whose dumpsters were they filling?
"...a digital camera with pictures of living and dead animals..."
That's the part that creeps me out. Why would they take photos of dead animals, that they most likely killed themseves? Future propaganda? Trying to fake some charges against someone else?
I can't stand these idiots. They are truly evil. Right up there with the "Alliance for Animals" that has now infiltrated our beloved Brat Fest, forcing tofu dogs on everyone, syophoning money away from legitimate and long-standing charities, and padding their own coffers to do the same demented things that PETA does.
I've encountered the ALF and ELF in the Gila Wilderness.
Next time, I won't be so polite. They had us outnumbered (but not outgunned).
Oh . . . The Gila.
I have some experience, with some who have some experience, with the situation there during the mid 1990s.
I sound like an Alice in Wonderland, with all this double speak -- but it is neat to know you are there in/near the Gila.
It is a big country we live in, but such a small world.
I'd hate to be a PETA freak in Catron County, reckon' that would be a real endangered species ;) What do the PETA/Sierra types use for ammunition in such settings -- do they wave a tofu leaf at you?
They booby-trap the tanks, river-and-streamside trails, and wear that hooded rain gear over their extended backpacks in hopes of spooking your horses and killing them and you in the process, among other things.
Then there is the reintroduction of the Mexican Gray Wolf, which they're also behind.
OMG,
I think I'd be at the next wildlife commission meeting, asking for a season on these animals, no limit.
But I also know the reality of what you are facing out west.
Out here in my part of the country, we have to face a few Yankees invading. But there, Oh Lord, you have problems, and no rights, I'll bet.
Somebody needs to have the wisdom and foresight to turn these freaks over (guide them, so to speak) into Grizzly country, and let them them reap the benefits of their enlightened superiority.
But, like Chief Seattle said once, they'll just keep coming, in droves, with their noise, that assaults the ears.
Oh, nevermind, you know what I mean.
That's been tried for decades.
The wolves are allowed to roam free. Plus, the mature ones each have a radio collar and at least 3 keepers; two armed federal employees with arrest powers on the ground, and one in the air.
It's a federal crime to disturb or harass them, unless they're killing your livestock (even then, it's problematic).
"They booby-trap the tanks, river-and-streamside trails, and wear that hooded rain gear over their extended backpacks in hopes of spooking your horses and killing them and you in the process, among other things."
Actually, elk for dinner (grin) I was referring to these animals (AR and eco freaks) in my last post.
I would handle the wolves and other critters (Shhhh, ya know)
They'll never have a season on human freaks, but it is fun to play with them.
Godspeed, wishing you the best.
Same to you.
Shoot, shovel and shut up bump.
