PROVO — Laura Bush is campaigning for Utah Congressman Chris Cannon. With both Cannon and challenger John Jacob poised to release television ads, the first lady recorded a phone message last week asking Republicans in Utah's 3rd District to vote for Cannon in the party's June 27 primary. "We need Chris in Congress so he can continue securing our borders, protecting our families and helping make the president's tax relief permanent," Bush said in the message, which hasn't been released yet
Word of the White House endorsement leaked to the Jacob camp over the weekend through a Republican Party channel. "The president apparently is going to come out to support Chris," Jacob said Sunday during a debate on KUTV. The first lady could be a powerful ally among Republicans in Utah, where President Bush's approval ratings are higher than nearly anywhere else in the nation. He had a 65 percent approval rating last month among voters registered in the 3rd District, according to a poll done by Dan Jones & Associates
"My guess is she's over 70 percent," Jones said Sunday. "That will help Cannon.How much, we really don't know. Sometimes you can really translate popularity and sometimes you can't." A White House endorsement is rare in aprimary, Jones said. "It's unusual for the White House or influential members of Congress to get involved in the primary election of a state Congressional district." Jacob campaign consultant Hayden Hill called the move a sign the race is tightening. "Obviously (Cannon) knows he's vulnerable, and he's bringing out the big guns," Hill said. The first lady's message is a part of a Cannon campaign strategy to record dozens of local leaders and use the recordings in phone calls to likely voters. Bush's message will go to a broader range of potential voters. The first lady's message is short, and campaign manager Nathan Rathbun said the Cannon campaign has not decided when to start dialing up phone numbers with it.

So Tancredo is bad and your going to believe "such conservative organizations such as the American Conservative Union" even though the ACU has given Tom Tancredo a higher lifetime rating than Chris Cannon?

Let me see if I have this straight. To you ACU rating of tancredo of 100% good and wonderful. 100% rating for Chris Cannon, bad and the ACU is clueless.
Well you can believe what you want to believe. With a 100% ACUer "friend"(tancredo) setting up PACs to get rid of another 100% ACUer(Cannon) who needs enemies.
BTW, Cannon has not set up a reciprocal PAC to get rid of tancredo.
Cannon has the class to try to discuss differences amongst the party, while tancredo does it for, IMO, "showhorsemanship" and to keep funds flowing into his PAC.

God bless President Bush, but honestly, trusting Cannon to secure our borders is like trusting Bill Clinton to guard the chastity of your ample-bosomed 16-year old daughter.

The absolute reverse can be said about you, Dane.
I never said it was wonderful. What I said stands. The ACU gives out these ratings on a very small sample of issues, none of which included immigration last I looked. You keep touting Cannon's ACU ratings and say you love the organization, so why don't you like a member (Tancredo) with a higher lifetime score than Cannon?

If I were the Dane of my side of the immigration debate, I would post this line over and over again:

Chris Cannon is not a Vicente Fox sycophant, but you keep pushing that lie.
BTW, interesting that Matt Throckmorton has sided with Chris Cannon and not tom tancredo. I guess Mr. Throckmorton would rather work with a workhorse, than a showhorse.
If La Raza is for Cannon then Republicans had better hold on to their wallets. Funny how reps like Cannon can propose the "Dream Act" to give a break to illegals and their student children but never seek to give the legal middle class some relief from in-state college tuition which doubles every six years.
The President campaigned for Specter against the conservative, Toomey, in the PA primary of '04. The GOP was against Dr. Tom Coburn of OK, but he beat his "moderate" opponent soundly in '04. Let's hope the voters of Utah have as much sense as those in OK. But these endorsements clearly show that George Bush and Laura Bush are not conservatives.
Excellent! Glad our First Lady and the White House endorsed Cannon. We need more Senators who are like Congressman Cannon and care about Republican values. Glad that we in Texas have Senators Cornyn and Hutchison.

If this Cannon guy gets bounced in the primary it would send shock waves through the party.
