Immigration key to Utah election
Washington Times ^ | 6/23/06 | Charles Hurt

Posted on 06/23/2006 3:40:49 AM PDT by Dane

PROVO, Utah -- Rep. Chris Cannon is a loyal Republican with the endorsement of the National Rifle Association and a 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union. He is unmarred by the ethical scandals that have roiled Washington in this election season....

Tuesday's matchup in Utah is viewed as a bellwether for how immigration issues play out nationwide. "If you want to throw the bums out, you can do that," Mr. Cannon said during his debate with Mr. Jacob earlier this month. Responded Mr. Jacob: "When you talk about throwing the bums out, I'm just working on one right now."

Please Willard Scott is still on TV because of the "rural local yokels"(

What are you implying Dane, that because I am from rural America, I must know Willard Scott because I am a yokel?

Come on, your bias is showing. Rural America is the backbone of Utah, if not the nation. You are insulting.

Cool, neighbor.... I would never support Cannon either.

You need to change your State flag on your profile, it says you're from Colorado.

Unlike you, I AM from Utah. I was a caucus delegate to the State GOP Convention, and I am an election poll judge. I speak from Utah for some Utahans (about 52% according to the votes at the convention.) Didn't seem to need to reiterate I AM FROM UTAH AND I LIVE IN DISTRICT 3. How's that!

Good for you, no problem, now what is your opinion on John Jacob's "fast pass" proposal.

I call it amnesty.

Well duh, at least frankenmonkey there was honest that he is working from tancredo territory to try to get rid of good conservative Chris Cannon.

BTW, frankenmonkey when are you going to post on FR that you live in Connecticut and are going to vote against Chris Shays.

I envy the people of this congressional district. They get to vote in a competitive primary race between two genuine conservatives. And which ever candidate wins, the winner will be a more conservative representative than most of this country will ever have an opportunity to vote for in their own district. I see this race as a tremendous plus for the Republican Party and if Jacob should win, it will send an even stronger message to other Republicans that immigration is the issue on which the conservative base turns.

You haven't been paying attention....hello...is this mike on? Fast pass is a talking point by Cannon supporters sent to disseminate an erroneous message.

Fast pass is just a proposal to ELIMINATE amnesty by requiring illegals to leave the country and reapply for worker status. IF they are good residents of the US, property owners, tax payers, no criminal record then, and ONLY then, their request may be (without certainty...it isn't a free pass) expedited. It is NOT amnesty. AND it is only a suggestion. He isn't out there "selling" it. He was asked to come up with something - he did....again it is only a suggestion.

What does Cannon propose? Perks for illegals...yeah, that's it...lets just give them amnesty and in the meantime give them scholarships, social security benefits, health care. He's a freakin' RINO.

Not really, IMO, one is a good Conservative with a Congressional voting record to prove it(Cannon).

The other is an opprunistic creep(Jacob) who will say anything but proposes something inane as "fast pass", but still gets the Monica treatment from the tancredo/bay buchanan crowd on FR.

I have not studied his voting record, but the problem with any incumbent's voting record is that they never seem to show a recorded vote on the pay raises that they always seem to be getting.

You don't even have the cajones to post where you come from.

Fess up...you don't even live in the Intermountain West. I give much more credence to the opinions of my neighbors in Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Montana they I'd give to someone in the hip-pocket of Washington DC...

Come on Dane, what State do you reside in?

Well gee when are you going to study bay buchann's voting record.

At least I have the cajones to not be a coward and post under two different screen names, ala you(DUmmie).

I'm going to post a personal story here since Dane likes to refer to Jacob as a creep....it isn't true.

I met John Jacobs during the campaign leading to the GOP convention. He is honest, conservative, and a straight shooter. I was impressed. I went into the race with my vote securely in favor of Chris Cannon....that is until I met him.

Chris never says anything...he dances around issues always trying to come down on the right side of whichever wind is blowing. He talks the talk (but not very good.) He comes across as simple-minded. You don't believe me? Find a link showing the guy talking, it will boggle the mind.

On Memorial Day, I attended the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Camp Williams. It was one of the only "official" ceremonies in Utah. Orin Hatch was the keynote speaker.

It was attended by a small crowd...mostly aging WWII vets or widow's of vets. There were a scattering of Viet Nam Veterans and people like me, parents of current military personnel.

Across the room, I noticed, was John Jacob and his wife. They sat in an obscure position, they remained obscure. No one knew them, or knew they were there. I watched this wonderful man brought to tears as the tribute was given to our heroes who have defended our freedom. Orin Hatch talked more about the songs he has written and what was going to be published and released, he talked about his own legislation and everything HE had accomplished, he talked about the sacrifice of his brother in WWII and his brother-in-law in Viet Nam....it was all about him.

Jacob was there...in the background, unobserved, paying tribute to the dead, with humility, respect and honor. It wasn't Jacob's day. He quietly left in quiet reverence.

He is a good man.

BTW the post I responded to was directed at me. I answered and I wasn't speaking for frankenmonkey.

Seriously, you think I post at DU? Back it up Dane. You can't, can you?

I've been a staunch supporter of President Bush. I was adamant in my support during the Meier's debacle. You are serioulsy thrashing about here.

Where are you from? It's a simple question.

He falsely acuses me of hatred. Falsely accuses you of being a DU troll.

Name calling and diversion - classic tactic of someone who cannot support his own position in a discussion.
