While the latest performance of Albany lawmakers was breathtakingly destructive on its face, the damage is even worse when compared to fiscal policies in other states.
Rarely inclined to remember - or even to care - that the Empire State must compete economically with 49 other states, New York lawmakers have once again failed to improve the state's attractiveness for taxpaying individuals and businesses.
Little wonder why New York is losing more residents than any other state - and why businesses are fleeing, upstate especially.
Other states are only too happy to woo New Yorkers and New York businesses...
Albany added more than $7 billion in new spending - in percentage terms, the increase was the largest in decades.

As they lose their Congressional seats, they also lose votes for the next President.

Most young people don't care about politics. Upstate NY housing prices are dirt cheap, among the cheapest in the country. However, as for the taxes you're absolutely right. But if you're renting, you just see the benefit of cheap rent.
As for the rest of upstate NY, beautiful scenery, the Finger Lakes, Lake Erie and Ontario, wine country, the Adorondaks, Alleghany State Park, Niagara Falls, four seasons - plenty of snow in the winter for skiing, plenty of warmth in the summer for boating/hiking/other recreational activities.
It's just sad that the powers that be are bringing us down so much. People have suggested splitting NYC from NY, and countered that saying that NYC provides funding for upstate NY, and without it, Upstate would be poverty-stricken. This may be true at the beginning - but after businesses see Upstate as a viable place to invest rather than a Socialist paradise, that would turn around.
When the lights go out in New York, we know our work will be finished.........
......Other states are only too happy to woo New Yorkers and New York businesses... ...
Name one.
Attracting New Yorkers is like attracting Cancer. It'll probably kill you.
You cannot tax your way to prosperity.
I grew up in New York (Suffolk County on Long Island) and commuted into Manhattan for work for 19 years.
I moved to New Hampshire ("Live Free or Die") three years ago. What a tax-savings windfall! In NH, our politics are imperfect, but there is major focus on SPENDING, unlike NY where the unions elect the politicians, who then milk the taxpayers (to whom they promised tax cuts in order to get elected).... A totally dishonest budget process that is now yielding a population exodus.
Sad, but the citizens can blame themselves: they don't know squat about how the state finances itself, and the politicians take advantage...
"Why would any young person want to live in NY?"
My Daughter just took a job on Wall Street. The answer is $$$. There are still a lot of high paying jobs in NYC that even with the high taxes and cost of living make it worthwhile.
Also, she has sold her car and loves the city. Rudy make it safe except in some areas, and it is better than Atlanta as far as crime.
From the map, I notice that the states loosing population are heavy gun control (not at all second amendment friendly) states. Looks Like I will be crossing Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois off my list. I used to make fun of Texas. Now it looks Like I will retire there in a few years.
Upstate NY ping.
You'd suddenly have a swing state - and an ultra-blue state.
Yeah ...more and more life looks like an Ayn Rand novel.
Well, they've got the solution to this problem--Governor Spitzer.
Is a conservative electable statewide by running the table upstate to make up for losses in the NYC metro?
That map is interesting on the population shifts.
Some people also move because of weather, crime rates...
Also looking at the counties is good. Every state has good and bad counties.
Sure Pataki did that. The problem is that Pataki is just about as conservative as you can get by that strategy.
After a few years of Spitzer, though, I'm guessing that a conservative would even carry NYC.
LOL.

Manhattan is one of the coolest places in the country. But not to live there long-term... For new grads its awesome for a few years out of school, experience the culture and diversity, meet a ton of people from all over, but then they generally get-the hell out of dodge if they can. You can't raise a family there unless you are ultra-wealthy (or in the transit workers unions), the taxes and commute and crowds will do you in eventually.
The silver lining: New, primarily liberal college grads will often change colors (to red) like I did after a few years of working in NY.
Minnesota has a 'shall issue' concealed carry law.
I am not saying that the Commies DON'T have their fingers everywhere here, but that is one thing we have.
That being said, I too am looking at SD among other places to move.
Upstate, the blue counties are generally the more urban counties (around Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton and Ithaca) plus the northern tip (proximity to Canada and away from the "Northeast bible belt" as I call it).
Yup. Life has a way of turning blue folks into red folks -if they're smart...or they're residents of the District of Columbia, which is the bluest of the blue jurisdictions.
