Lieberman: Lamont doesn't understand terror threat

WATERBURY, Connecticut (AP) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman set out on his go-it-alone re-election campaign Thursday and seized on the terror arrests in Britain to argue that his Democratic opponent, Ned Lamont, does not fully understand the danger facing the nation.

Lieberman's stop in Waterbury was his first public event since losing Tuesday's Democratic primary, dismissing his campaign staff and launching his independent bid.

He seized on the terror plot in Britain to criticize Lamont's opposition to the war in Iraq.

"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us -- more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous than the Soviet communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.

"If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England. It will strengthen them and they will strike again."

He's slightly changing his tune, now, for one reason and one reason only...he wants to win in November.

Your own changing view is silly. Yes, we need to fight to win, but pulling out, because of PCism ( which it isn't, but that's a whole other topic ), is just as silly as any other cut&run reason.

"Actually, I hope the states republicans rally behind the republican candidate and let the rats split their vote between Lieberman and Lamont"

First of all it's not going to happen that way. Lieberman is going to take as many moderate Republicans and Independents as he does Democrats. Do you know anything about the candidate in the CT senate race? He's not a feasible candidate. Getting Lieberman elected is the best and most likely way to humiliate the Democrats here.

That is what he's doing...wetting his finger and feeling the lefty wind.

He'll probably win...this is going to be a four way race, but I don't expect him to keep being nearly as proactive, vis-a-vis as he once was, on the WOTC and neither should you. The man is spineless.

Yes, he will probably win, but he will do so without my and my husband's vote. There's just so much nose holding, that one can do.

I dont think it's silly to be against our government charging our troops with murder in a warzone.

I wouldn't either. I'd just grab some popcorn and enjoy watching the Democrats splinter from the cheap seats.

There's just so much nose holding, that one can do.

Being a registered Republican in the PR of New York, I can understand the sentiment.

The man is spineless.

A Rat by any other name is still a Rat.

I recall he apparently forgot about his convictions once he became Gore's running mate in 2000. He'll do it again. I agree with your assessment, he is a finger in the wind politician.

Right now, except for a Zell Miller, there is NO RAT I trust on national security issues.

This isn't the first war that this has happened and it really isn't that PC, at all.

Even during and after WW II, lots of soldiers were charged and some convicted of doing all kinds of things; including theft and rape.

It really does help to know and understand history.

I take it you missed their debate that was televised a few weeks ago where Lieberman wiped the floor with Lamont!

I agree with you 100%.

I just wish that more FREEPERS would stop posting about things ( such as LIEberman ) that they know little to nothing at all about.

My brother has met Lieberman a few times (he's a Federal officer) and says he's a decent guy and the one Democrat he'd vote for. He also told me that Ted Kennedy is a complete a-hole : )

The Council of Orthodox Jewry doesn't agree with your brother. They threw LIEberman out of that religion, when he was running for V.P.!

I've known/know some Dem politicians too and yes, they can be very personable, but I wouldn't vote for any one of them; not even with a gun to my head.

What Lieberman must not realize is that most of his party doesn't understand the threat of the terrorists. It isn't just Lamont and his band of merrily misled anti-war moonbats, but virtually the entire Democrat Party falling into lock step with the George Soros's and Michael Moores.

Welcome to a dose of reality, Joe. What do you think we conservatives have been trying to say for decades now?

Worse than that, we are rooting for a far left liberal who votes against us ninety percent of the time, opposes our judicial nominees, supported Clinton, and was Algore's veep choice. But if in far left Connecticut, I would support him too. It's the darndest thing.

My 97 year old father, a life long republican, is actually planning on voting for Joe this November

I'm an independent, but have voted republican since 94 & I plan on on voting for Joe - the republican candidate is an idiot who can't win & I cannot let me state send Lamont to Washington.

Bad enough we've got Dodd
