I'm from the Bible belt and know that this is a way of looking at the world. It's part of the culture and the way I was raised. But Arcy is really right; it isn't Biblical.
"Olmert needs to resign. The time for diplomacy ended in 1948, and only the terminally stupid should be talking about it today. Too many innocent Israelis are going to die/have died because of Olmert's disporportionate need for international approval. All the "international community" is going to approve of with regards to Israel is if all the Jews line up in an orderly fashion for the ovens."
He may need to resign but not because of the reason you mentioned. He did the right thing and went to war, but his lack of experience being a lawyer with no military experience and his primary general being an air force guy.
You can't bomb away Hezbollah you need to go in with ground troops. This cost Israel lives and hundreds of millions dollars worth of damage from ever increasing rocket attacks.
He was too caring about the Lebanese which is part of his culture to care for other humans. Now normally this is a nice way to think but in general it doesn't win wars. We all hated dropping the bomb on the Japanese but it saved more lives then destroyed them by ending the war.
Lot's of civilians die when war breaks out Olmert must ignore what the world thinks because - lets face it - Israel is hated no matter what road they choose and in fact it will save lives winning the war. As with the Japanese, appeasement and negotiation without a full surrender would have failed.
Remember, it's the leaders of Iran, Syria, Lebanon and the UN that hold the responsibility for starting/enabling this war, not Olmert. It was Israeli leaders before him who tried appeasement with murderers that led up to this boiling point. We in the USA waffle on the issue of killing all the bad guys to appeasement. Europe is all about appeasment and what did they get when dealing with Iran? The middle finger and an Iran that has or will soon have nukes that someday will be used on the civilized world.
But, that said, I'm really, really glad to see Israel moving. I do believe action is important.
But Arcy is really right; it isn't Biblical.

Probably not, but I was not in any way, implying that it was. :-)
"I do feel bad for those poor IDF guys though..."
Don't feel bad, they don't. The IDF only felt bad that they were held back this long from destroying this enemy. They are willing to die to defend their country and know the risks when they sign on. I only felt bad they had to waste some of their lives while politicians held them back, but what else is new about politicians not understanding war?
What Ehud Olmert has done will cost Israel 1/3 of its population before this is over.
"May God protect the IDF. May God protect the Lebanese civilians (real ones, not the ones with Katushya launchers in their garage). God have mercy on the Hezbollah murderers that they may repent of their evil before they're gunned down."
AMEN and AMEN! Now if only the whole world thought the same way we would indeed have heaven on earth.
...after several dozen died while the IDF stood still in "target" mode, waiting on the U.N.
"If he were brilliant the job would have already been completed. He had all the time he needed and he wasted it. This has already been the longest war in Israel's history. But, like Dems here in the States, he didn't have the stomach for doing what needed to be done. Perhaps the pressure today (all the calls for his head) bucked him up"
My only comment is that Israel looked to us for almost sixty years to support them in every way possible so they still feel they should look to us for potential solutions. Truth is, they can stand just fine on their own these days to destroy such threats and if a big evil country does come against them, we will be right there to fully supply/support them again.
May G-d bless the State of Israel and the IDF, and safeguard all of Israel's people from any harm. May He allow the IDF to destroy Israel's and His enemies quickly and with as little harm to innocent people as possible.
May G-d also give the Israeli people sufficient wisdom to change their leadership as soon as possible after this war has been concluded. Olmert, Perez and the rest of the Erev Rav now controlling Israel have no faith in G-d, have little in the way of morality, don't stand up to Israel's enemies, and don't have the first clue as to how to prosecute a war. Israel has lost over 100 dead, thousands wounded, hundreds of thousands have had to evacuate their homes and live in shelters or go somewhere in the south of Israel - which has disrupted all of their lives and devastated the Israeli economy - and, finally, the IDF's remaining deterrent against the Arabs has been foolishly squandered. On top of everything else, it defers decisions vital to Israel's existence to the criminal and anti-Israel UN and even talks about giving up territory to avowedly hostile entities while fighting a war! This government is immoral, rudderless and incompetent, and it deserves to enter the dustbin of history.
"The Hezzie leadership have all gone to ground. The window for winning a decisive victory closed weeks ago. This is now just an Orkin operation - and the roaches will be back in six months."
Yes your right in a sense that they will come back somehow but it's important to set a precendent that Israel won't sit back and allow their enemies to trample on them and treat them like sub-humans any longer. The real enemy is Iran & Syria and the USA and Israel together will fully deal with that problem next.
""God helps those that help themselves"
Not biblical nor doctrinal. God helps those who CAN'T help themselves."
Yeah - you're right and I understand what you mean. It bothered me, too, at first, until I realized that what this person said is that God goes with the Israeli army as they do his will.

bwahahahah...oh, stop it... you're killing me.... bwahahahah.... yeah, right.... like LIBERALS pray...... that's rich.
"Olmert vetoed the aggressive approach initially advocated by the Israeli military, and instead opted for a widely-unsuccessful campaing of airstrikes alone. Not only did the airstrikes fail in their military objective, but the images hurt the Israelis politically as well.
When he finally did order a ground attack, it was very limited in scope and involved far too few troops. What was needed was a rapid attack with overwhelming force, and that's what Olmert has not done. Honestly, this is a seriously timid campaign to this point."
Another bright guy here at FR who knows the real deal. My hats off to you XJarhead, I just posted something similar and wouldn't have if I had read your post sooner. You summed it all up!
Amen
I think that after this terrorist plot, the gloves are off and not even Kofi Annan can stop it.
"What Ehud Olmert has done will cost Israel 1/3 of its population before this is over."
Please explain why you think this way.
Wagner? I don't think so :P
