Olmert ordered the attack because the IDF was on the brink of mutiny. A thread here yesterday says there was even talk of a coup: I doubt that, but the IDF has enough political clout to guarantee that Olmert's government would fall in short order if he agreed to this ludicrous cease-fire deal, cooked up in Paris. When the details of the cease-fire were leaking out yesterday, the Likud people went ballistic. Fortunately, the bumpkins running Lebanon didn't seize the cease-fire victory that was handed to them, and raise new objections. This gives Olmert the cover to scuttle the whole rotten business. The State Department's role in this has been a truly wretched thing to behold.

The real enemy is Iran & Syria and the USA and Israel together will fully deal with that problem next.

Agreed. We need to get on with it.

"God helps those that help themselves"

Not biblical nor doctrinal. God helps those who CAN'T help themselves.

Uh, sorry, but that's not correct. G-d has given all of us a mind, as well as the tools to handle all of the challenges that He gives us (and He gives them to us constantly). G-d expects each of us to do the best that we can with the tools that we have, and we have no right even asking for His help if we don't do everything humanly possible to help ourselves first. If we do that and still need help, and we then ask Him for help, we will receive it if we are truly deserving of it (and not necessarily in the form or manner that we have requested).

Needless to say, not everyone gets what they request, whether they can help themselves or not. But asking for G-d to provide you with money while you sit on your couch flipping channels instead of looking for a job just doesn't cut it. Even the Red Sea (or Sea of Reeds) didn't split just because - it split only after Nachson ben Aminodov showed faith in G-d and did what he could to save himself by jumping into the waters...and only then did G-d split the waters.

I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but what is that wrapped around the rabbi's left hand and forearm?

God bless Isreal, and may they destroy their enemies quickly.

Olmert F***ed up :

http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/9116.htm

According to informed sources, there is an almost total breakdown in trust and confidence between the General Staff and the PM's office...

Olmert was presented with an assiduously prepared and detailed operational plan for the defeat and destruction of Hezbollah within 10-14 days, which the IDF has been formulating for the past 2-3 years.

This plan was supposed to have begun with a surprise air onslaught against the Hezbollah high command in Beirut, before they would have had time to relocate to their underground bunkers. This was to have been followed immediately by large scale airborne and seaborne landing operations, in order to get several divisions on the Litani River line, enabling them to outflank Hezbollah's "Maginot line" in southern Lebanon. This would have surprised Hezbollah, which would have had to come out of its fortifications and confront the IDF in the open, in order to avoid being isolated, hunted down and eventually starved into a humiliating submission.

This was exactly what the IDF senior command wanted, as Israeli military doctrine, based on the Wehrmacht's blitzkrieg doctrine, has traditionally been one of rapid mobile warfare, designed to surprise and outflank an enemy.

According to senior military sources, who have been extensively quoted in both the Hebrew media and online publications with close ties to the country's defense establishment, Olmert nixed the second half of the plan, and authorized only air strikes on southern Lebanon, not initially on Beirut.

Although the Premier has yet to admit his decision, let alone provide a satisfactory explanation, it seems that he hoped futilely for a limited war.

Well, those parties can pretty much keep arguing forever. Olmert recognizes this, and intends to let the UN offer proposal after proposal, constantly thinking it's getting closer to a solution. He won't necessarily outright reject every single proposal the UN offers; either Lebanon or Hezbollah will reject a huge number of them, or he'll demonstrate that any given UN proposal is unworkable and tell them to go back to the drawing board, or both.

The way I see it, Olmert is a smart, smart man.

I second that observation!! GO IDF

Your missing one huge point: Hezbollah is not a nation-state, hence none of this UN-stuff really applies to them. That's why we are being treated to this ridiculous spectacle of the US negotiating ceasefire terms with France. If we assume that the US is representing Israeli interests, and the French are representing Lebanon (and Syria?), who represents Hezbollah? Nobody in these negotiations.

Is it the motto of the entire 101st ABN Div, or just the 506th PIR?

Olmert baffles me. Is he bipolar or something? You always know where things stand with Bibi.

I think they've made it quite clear what the war is about, the dismantling of Hezbollah. And so far they have been systematically carrying this out.

The IDF had plans developed over years that would have ended Hezbollah's existence in about a week. They called for extremely strong strikes against all Hezzie targets in Beirut at the onset of the war, in an attempt to kill Nasrallah and the rest of the leadership, or at least to prevent their easy escape. Simultaneously, Israel would land or airdrop troops far to the north of the border, and these forces would have worked their way south while the armored forces would have gone north. The Hezzies would have been surrounded on Day 1, and would have been leaderless and cut off from resupply from Syria & Iran.

Instead, (Fo)Olmert and his entourage eliminated the immediate air/sea landings, didn't allow ground forces in immediately and cut back on the Day 1 airstrikes - thus allowing Nasrallah to escape, most of Hezzie terrorists to escape, Syria/Iran to resupply those left, and causing over 100 dead, thousands wounded and a month of 1/5 of the economy being shut down. Not exactly what I'd call smart or decisive leadership - Olmert is Israel's Jimmy Carter and should be tossed from office as soon as hostilities are over.

I make the assumption that France represents Hezbollah's interests, not Lebanon's. :)

Your attacks on our role in this aren't supported by anything but a bunch of media reports and some diplomacy-speak from President Bush, Rice, Bolton, etc. Amid all the diplomatic words and gestures, they made it clear what the POLICY would be and nothing has changed that.

The State Dept. you claim is in charge of whatever has gone on is actually populated by quite a few enemies of Bush, Rice and Bolton. Doubtful that Bush, Rice and Bolton allowed their enemies at State to take over this crisis.

And I should've included Dick Cheney and Rummy in my lists.

For all YOU know, the problem all along has been Olmert, or this whole thing has been a scam to make it look like we "gave peace a chance" and then, KAPOWWW!!

No reply yet, so I'll help.

Both have wrapped tefillin or phylacteries on their arms and heads.

I sense a lot of discontent with Olmert, but guess I dont agree with stabbing the guy in the back while he is engaged in the fight. Politics used to stop at the borders in the US. It obviously does not anymore, but in Israel, while I dont see Olmert as a great war leader, I haven't walked a mile in his shoes either. I still think he has been, by and large, doing the right thing in waging this battle. And I am glad to see the gloves mutually coming off in the global war against Islamic fascism. I'll let the Israeli people judge him as worthy or not of being re-elected.

There is no dismantling hezbollah, we know for a fact that hezbollah is a front for Iran, and Iran will continue to provide them with arms and personnel.

My prediction, and I might be wrong is that Isreal will lose this, and NATO will come in to "secure" the area.

I hope I am wrong.

I also hope I am wrong about the possibility that Olmert KNOWS they will lose and is sending these IDF troops into slaughter.

I must be wrong, I am sure I am.
