SMOKERS struggling to stub out that final cigarette may have new insight into why it is so hard to quit. A report shows American tobacco companies increased nicotine levels by an average of 10 per cent over six years.

Wish on.
Not my wish...That's what the social engineers have decided.

Dream on little boy.
Lol...Thanks!

You must miss it!
Nope. Don't smoke pot or cigarettes.

My right to smoke cigarettes where I live is NOT under attack.
The right to smoke cigarettes is under attack everywhere in America. You just haven't figured that out yet. Marijuana prohibition began as a tax act and anti marijuana propaganda flooded the media...Exactly the same as tobacco today.

At least in northern Maine, we don't have the tight asses the rest of you must live around! heh!
LOL!
The people here are mainly fat asses, tight isn't seen too often.

Funny thing is, Quest cigarettes are only legally available in about a dozen states or so.

<cynic on> I wonder if these same states have low cigarette taxes. In states with high cigarette taxes, the government would have a hidden interest in seeing smokers hooked on nicotine, so low-nicotine brands would not be in their best interest to allow, since the smokers of such brands could easily quit. <cynic off>

I agree with you about not only beer breath but bad breath in general. One thing about bad breath, though, is that it doesn't make others smell that way. Tobacco smoke (all kinds of smoke as well, of course) is not the same way. I have continually said, though, that I do NOT favor laws limiting smoking except in places where there is no choice but to be there (courthouses, town halls, etc). The market and personal choice should control. That includes homes and restaurants.

That said, personal courtesy and consideration for others suggests that one's choice to smoke shouldn't require others to be forced to put up with it. I know how it was in the 50s and 60s. Times change. Most people these days, even here in NC, do not smoke, and most people prefer not to be exposed to it in enclosed spaces. I don't support laws on the subject, but I have to say I resent those (not all) smokers who seem to give no thought to how their habit affects others. My point in earlier posts is that smokers just don't really know how they smell to others, just as I didn't know how working in a fish restaurant smelled to others, until my family reminded me. Even then, I couldn't smell it as much, having been in it for many hours. Still, I remain opposed to laws on the subject.

I'm sorry, but nicotine is NOT that addictive. I just quit smoking a few months ago (I smoked two packs a day) and just stopped. It's a habit, that's all it is.

Let me tell you something that you probably didn't know. People who complain about the smell of tobacco have a chemical imbalance in their systems and they usually have the MOST offensive body oder. Like I said above, I recently quit smoking and I've noticed that almost to a person, those who complain about the smell of tobacco smoke, have an overwhelming acrid smell.

Why did you only notice after you quit smoking?

Because I never paid attention to them before. Now, sitting in a restaurant, you can smell them as they walk by and sure enough, they're the ones complaining.

I spoke to my hairdresser about it, she said the same thing (and she is not and has never been a smoker). She said those who complain the most about the smell of cigarettes have an almost gag inducing acrid smell to them as she stands over them to wash their hair or work on them.

I have no basis to agree or disagree with your statement, not having done research or heard of this smoke-smell hater stench. I don't complain much about tobacco smoke, I tolerate or evade it. I haven't heard of any complaints about my body odor, but I wonder if I would have if I had it? It would be interesting to see if what you say is really true.

If I found out that I stink, I would try not to offend people with my stench, as best I could. That is all those who don't care for tobacco smoke should expect of smokers.

By the way, do you like the smell of tobacco smoke in curtains, upholstery and in cars? Or is it something you don't notice? I think the smell of tobacco smoke as it is being smoked is one thing, and sometimes I find it to be acually very nice; and the smell of tobacco smoke remnants in curtains and cars, or floating in the haze of a room, something else. Do you make the same distinction?

It's pretty much as She Lion said, it depends of the house and how clean it is. I've been in the homes of smokers that smell and in the homes of smokers that do not smell. It can have to do with which brand the smokers smoke, the air circulation in their homes, a lot of things. As to drapes and furniture, with Fabreeze there is no excuse for a smelly house.

I've also been in homes with cat boxes that smelled horrendously, in homes of exercizers that smelled of rancid sweat or in the homes of some ethnic cooks that reeked of certain pungent herbs. So, you just adjust.

What's the big deal? More nicotine in the cigarette would mean you need to smoke less in order to get the same dose. In effect, they're helping to reduce smoking.

I gather from your response that you agree that stale tobacco smoke is something most people want to get rid of, that is, that it doesn't smell good. I agree about different smokers' homes. A good friend with whom I do some business is a smoker, and among the most considerate I know of. When we travel together we usually take my car. He has never even asked to smoke in my car. I take breaks often enough to let him smoke, or he knows he can ask. At his house you can hardly tell that he and his wife smoke, except in is upstairs TV and smoking room, where it is obvious, but only when people are actually smoking. When I go to his house to watch a game, I know there will be smoking. I have decided the company is more important than the slight discomfort of the tobacco smoke. But I also know whose house I am in. When he comes to my house, he knows (without ever asking) that smoking isn't welcome here (that is, inside. On the screened in deck it's tolerable.) To me, it is all about courtesy-- from both directions.

"Oh come on!. Pot is very illegal."

"And cigarettes soon will be."

Anyone who thinks cigarettes will be illegal is a fool, the government will never give up that cash cow, no matter how much whining nanny staters cry like babies.

Stale tobacco smoke is like stale anything, it's not pleasant. Just like stale sweat, stale cooking oil, stale anything.

Have you forgotten Alcohol Prohibition?
Alcohol taxes were the primary source of income to federal and state governments prior to alcohol prohibition.

Nicotine has now been placed under FDA control as an addictive drug. Nicotine prohibition has been discussed by congressional committees since 2003 and is supported by the DEA.

Anyone who can't see the writing on the wall is a fool.

I don't care what you do with your appetite or your crotch...It's none of my business. The Constitution does not grant me, or the government, the right to dictate to you what you can or cannot consume and that includes tobacco and marijuana.

LOLOL!!! mugs...that is the quote of the day!!! As long as their smoke doesn't go up my nose...more power to 'em!!!

OOPS, I can't believe I forgot to mention the info below in my earlier post in this thread---it must of been the football withdrawal that I was in---but I got my fix---well @ least for a while. :)-

Believe it or not (I actually wasn't surprised when I 1st saw these items) but check out the story @ the following link & the other info:

Smoking ban hits Tom 'n' Jerry
http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1232382006

*Uh, Oh, I've have 2 days worth of a football "fix" & now I'll be on a roll.......

* Note 1 the above says "TOM 'n' JERRY" not "Ben & Jerry's" esp since they quit using Oreo brand cookies in their ice cream b/c the parent co of the cookie was a *gasp* tobacco co *eek*. Delete the smoking scenes but keep in the violent scenes. I'm not against the violent scenes in T&J but I'm just saying it's weird that they delete the smoke scenes but leave in the violent ones. *Sigh Again*

* Note 2 Don't forget that there ARE grps pushing to make ALL MOVIES that show smoking get an "R" rate. *Oh, Brother, Big Brother Sigh!* Is editing of "Agent 86" far behind??? Nope, I'm sure that it isn't far behind----that is IF it hasn't already happened somewhere.

* Note 3 Also, don't forget that in some places it is ALREADY ILLEGAL TO SMOKE IN ONE'S OWN CAR regardless of if others are present. Yes, this is unfortunately another area where I get to say "I told ya so". Some yrs ago I started to see bumper stickers that said "Well, at least I can still smoke in my car"...well NO LONGER in some jurisdictions. *BB SIGH!* Also in some places these anti-smoking in car regs are under "employment" which in some of those cases also applies to "co vehicles" regardless if all person's inside are smokers or even if there is only 1 person in the car - that being the smoking driver- & in Calabasas, CA one can't smoke OUTSIDE in PUB-LIC (reminds me of the Ron White PUB-LIC NYC bar joke, LOL anyway...) or in one's own car if the window is open let alone if it's a convertible, can't smoke @ bus-stops & also if your apt is within so many ft of laundry rm or pool for your apt bldg then you can't smoke in YOUR ONLY FRELLING APT (& possibly if near the parking lot you can't smoke on YOUR balcony)! And there are even MORE restrictions than that in town incl CIGAR SHOPS for Pete's sake. *Massive Big Brother Groan for that & the next* There is also a proposal for the state of CA to ban smoking altogether in apt bldgs b/c smoke might "leak" to other apts.

* Note 4 If I remember correctly the founder of MADD was "run out of town" so to speak b/c even SHE thought they (the org) were going too far. My recollection may be incorrect or maybe I'm remembering rumor but if that was the case it just goes to show that many a time someone starts something worthwhile for society then it gets radicalized & then all Common Sense goes out the door. My examps: MADD going mad IMHO & some anti-smokers becoming militant from wanting separate dining areas to wanting it outlawed completely in public. Lesson to learn: most of the time give any type of "Banner" an inch & then they want complete control/elimination of their target. BTW, does anybody know if MADD was involved in that BS in TX where they were arresting folks for being drunk IN BARS incl but not ltd to hotel bars by guests there that did even have a car W/ THEM? (Once again I hear Ron White & PUB-LIC...)

*Note 5 My opposition to smoking bans in public (like restaurants) & private businesses (like the VFW) REGARDLESS if banned by local, state or possible future nat'l (like france, Scotland & Ireland & next yr England) govts OR EVEN BY VOTER REFERENDUM is that as far as I'm concerned it is a VIOLATION of PROPERTY RIGHTS. IMHO, if a property owner wants to allow the smoking of an otherwise legal product on their premises it is NOBODY ELSES FRELLING BUSINESS. PERIOD. If non-smokers don't want to be around tobacco smoke well here is a RADICAL idea = DON'T GO FRELLING NEAR IT & that way they won't have to "tolerate" it & won't "smell" of tobacco either - PROBLEM SOLVED. B/C unless one is being literally "held captive" nobody is FORCED in public to be around smoke. It is called taking PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY. PERIOD. All a business should have to do is place "warning" signs on the entrances to their premises that smoking IS allowed inside then as far as I'm concerned THAT SHOULD BE THAT.

I'M MAD @ MY PARENTS OVER THINGS LIKE THIS b/c they LIED to me all these yrs when they said I was the oldest b/c increasingly I keep seeing a Big Brother hanging around me. *Dbl Eek*

I don't need a BB to "protect" me from smoke/smokers. Thank You Very Much!!!
