BUFFETT TO KIN: YOU'RE FIRED
NY Post ^ | 07 September 2006 | By RICHARD JOHNSON with PAULA FROELICH, CHRIS WILSON and BILL HOFFMANN

September 7, 2006 -- AN infuriated Warren Buffett has renounced one of his granddaughters - telling her she is no longer his relative "legally or emotionally" because she took part in a documentary about the lives of the very rich.

Nicole Buffett, the adopted daughter of Buffett's son Peter and biological daughter of Peter's ex-wife Mary, was featured in Jamie Johnson and Nick Kurzon's documentary, "The One Percent," which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and is a follow-up to Johnson's "Born Rich."

Enraged that Nicole not only participated in the documentary, but also plugged it on National Public Radio and "Oprah," Buffett wrote Nicole an "angry letter" two weeks ago telling her she was no longer part of his life, a source tells Page Six.

What a devistating thing for a father to hear his father say to his daughter (adopted or otherwise).

One of her comments in the film (from the article) --

"After we're out of school, we don't get any money from our family . . . Money is the spoke in my grandfather's wheel of life."

This statement could be taken as implying that Buffet is cheap and that money is all he cares about. That could all be true, but it could also explain why Buffet is so incensed at her.

Now that he's gone to the trouble of publicly disavowing her as his granddaughter, conspicuously pointing out that she's never been adopted and is not legally related to him, she is countering that with her own claims. That strongly suggests (at least, to me) that the two of them are positioning themselves for future litigation concerning his estate. Somehow, I don't think their difficulties with eachother are something new.

And BTW I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as legally adopting a granddaughter.

You know, if I were Bill Gate's or Warren Buffet's grandkid and I wasn't going to get anything from them because they were going to give it away, I would start making stuff up about them and none of it would be nice.

Oh, yea, by the way, for those of you who are not financially intuitive, the trust arrangement that Gates and Buffet have engaged in is most likely a tax avoidance scheme similar to that which Jacklyn Kennedy Onassis supposedly put into place upon her death. The trust owns the money but they control who runs the trust. Anyhow, that's my opinion.

Right ~ disfunctional. The relatives of Jacob Schmiddlapp (who held 100% ownership of Fifth-Third Bank before he died) were left penniless in the Depression. Many of them actually died of illnesses that were readily cured if they could have afforded carfare to a hospital.

The rich people are the ones who are disfunctional ~ Warren Buffet is just another example, and just as nasty. WOnder if he married his niece.

Buffett is a predator and takes no criticism. Big bucks, small brain.

Buffett gave billions to Bill Gates' foundation - he may have just as well given a check to Planned Parenthood. Disgusting, cold-hearted, eccentric old geezer.

It's not the money. It's the appalling spectacle of a grandfather telling a granddaughter he never had any feelings for her.

That's not exactly what he said- he said that he never legally adopted her as his grandchildren, which is silly since it only matters if his son legally adopted his stepdaughter.

I knew someone who worked for one of his companies that burned down in Ohio. He is so cheap that he refuses to spend money to keep them updated and safe.

I can certainly understand your point of view concerning a father's or grandfather's financial assistance to offspring. That said, my father, who also came from nothing and built his own wealth, contributed nothing to my support and education following my 18th year. He believed it would weaken me to not do for myself. I never held that against him and have always loved him. I believe a parent's only primary obligation to children is to feed, clothe, house and protect them until they reach maturity. All else, IMO, is optional.

the super-wealthy often are very tight with their money and sometimes it's a good thing for the offspring. I remember hearing the Rockefeller's, as college students, would have to hitch rides to get home, they weren't given cars and limitless money to spend (as are so many of today's yuppies' kids).

Then, again, Jack Kent Cooke virtually assured that his own son would not be in a position to buy/own the Redskins. (I always resented JKC for doing that to his son, but don't know the circumstances or anything about their relationship)

So, old man Buffett can join Bill and Melinda Gates in wiping out AIDS ... still better than Soros. Methinks his ex-granddaughter will do just fine without the old ba$tard's money.

Using your money as a weapon in emotional blackmail is childish. Tsk.

You're right and Buffet only said that he, himself, had not adopted her.

However, I don't believe that adoption by his son would automatically subject Buffet to a legal relationship to her as his granddaughter. I could be wrong and perhaps someone knowledgeable in this kind of legal matter will set things straight for us.

You make a valid point about self reliance being a forced/learned process. I believe I too am stronger due to the
stark choices forced upon me. I hope to be able to raise my daughters along similar lines. Should any of them show no inclination towards self reliance I would hope I would be able to help them learn how to stand on their own. They are young now and we shall see how good a job I do. But at the end of the day I love each of them no matter what and couldn't imagine denouncing their progeny or failing to support them should they really need it.

>>>I wonder if we'll Stalinize her out of family photos?>>>

I saw a picture comparison with a person in one photo, and not in another. It looked like Stalin but I'm not sure of who was removed. Is this what you are talking about? And who was removed?

What RELIGION is Warren Buffet??? This sure doesn't sound like what a Christian would do.

Buffett was raised Presbyterian, but I believe that he's either an atheist or an agnostic now. I know that he's been a major donor to pro-abortion groups.

They show it on the History channel. More than one person. Stalin had a team of artists and every time he had a rival, or a friend eliminated, they doctored photos. Many of the people he eliminated were made to seem as though they never existed.

A little study of the history of filthy rich familys shows that inherited great wealth is not the boon that most working people would assume it is.

Well, it certainly doesn't require being "filthy rich" to have enough money to make life a whole lot easier and less stressful. Buffett could easily have given his children enough to buy a home or start a business, without turning them into the Hilton sisters.

And you know, plenty of penniless bums waste their money, too.
