10/06/2006 | 12:34 Russian bombers passed aviation tower unnoticed
The flight tower at KeflavÃk airport was seemingly unaware of two Russian bombers that flew through Icelandic airspace last Friday.
This is claimed by HjördÃs Gudmundsdóttir, press officer of the Icelandic Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCAA), although the Minister for Foreign Affairs has made claims to the contrary. RÃV online reports. Gudmundsdóttir says that the DCAA only registers aircraft that have their radars on, and this is not always the case with military aircraft.
This was an unusual incident, as Icelandic aviation authorities are usually notified of military rehearsals near the country and other aircraft are then directed elsewhere.
Gudmundsdóttir admits that communications with radar stations have been somewhat lax since the departure of the US military, but says that the Icelandic airspace is just as secure as it was before.

Ping.
Yep, and no one was awake...
Ain't that the truth. Looks like the Russkies are thinking about Iceland if NATO won't back off of letting Eastern European nations join up. Ironically, I just got done yesterday re-reading "Red Storm Rising" and this just seems too 'deja vu'.
LOL
Clancy's best, imo.
The boys in Colorado probably knew about it; suppose there's nothing they could have done with no fighters on station in Iceland to chase them out.
"Ironically, I just got done yesterday re-reading "Red Storm Rising" and this just seems too 'deja vu'."
I think I beat you by about three days. My, my, how things haven't really changed much at all...
I spent 2 years stationed in Iceland chasing Bear bombers and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if they were able to overfly Iceland pretty much unnoticed since there's no military presence ther any more.
All the Icelandics have are three radar sites (assuming they are all still operational) used by our military previously but that are now used only as Air Traffic Control facilities. If the aircraft weren't squawking there's a good chance the Icelandics wouldn't see them even though they would get a raw data return from the aircraft. Raw data wouldn't tell them who they were, only that there are aircraft there.
Come on guys! The Russians are our friends now...
They were just flyin' around minding their own bidness!
yukety yuk yuk...
"A few days ago there were reports of Bear bombers off the coast of Alaska with Canadian and US interceptors scrambled to meet them. Interesting coincidence or probing to see how we would respond with all of the internal dissension in the US caused by the Democrats and their fellow travelers?"
The Russians aren't our friends. Maybe, some day, they will be, but don't hold your breath waiting. They are still testing us to see if we've lost it. Islamofacists aren't our only potential enemies in the world today.
The Russians are our competitors in the global marketplace. The last people that should be whining about competition are Americans.
"Red Storm Rising"
Clancy's best, imo.
As much as I loved the Jack Ryan series, I too also think Red Storm Rising was his best work to date. What a read!! I've always been facsinated in the "what if the Cold War went Hot" types of scenarios. Anyone know when Clancy's next novel is coming out?? And I don't mean one of those mini-series ghost written novels crap.
What does russia bring to the global marketplace? Missles, guns, and warplanes? Right...
Do you think Russia is going to launch an invasion of the US? What's with the anti-commie paranoia?
