A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

The wild duck startles like a sudden thought,
And heron slow as if it might be caught.
The flopping crows on weary wings go by
And grey beard jackdaws noising as they fly.
The crowds of starnels whizz and hurry by,
And darken like a clod the evening sky.
The larks like thunder rise and suthy round,
Then drop and nestle in the stubble ground.
The wild swan hurries hight and noises loud
With white neck peering to the evening clowd.
The weary rooks to distant woods are gone.
With lengths of tail the magpie winnows on
To neighbouring tree, and leaves the distant crow
While small birds nestle in the edge below.

Recently, my kids and I went to the beach. We saw hundreds of Monarch Butterflies migrating. I wish I had my camera for that day. The next day, we decided to go see if the butterflies were still there.

There were a few butterflies left, but the beach was filled with hundreds of migrating Tree Swallows.

We stood right in the middle of the flock. They had no fear. We were closer than a foot away. It was incredible. I wish I had better photos. The photos below, do not capture how impressive it was to see them all.

Here are some photos, from the web, of just a few of the species of birds, that we see visit the feeders during the fall/winter months.

I'm particular fond of the White-Throated Sparrows. They stick together in a group. They call back and forth as they take turns in groups feeding. I assume, from observing them, the calls are about keeping watchful of predators. White-Throated Sparrows have a beautiful song.

I had taken these photos in my yard. They are the most common hawks I see. They arrive in fall each year and leave the area early spring.

It's quite a challenge to Id them. Other than a few minor differences in markings, the shape of tail and their size, these two hawks look very much alike. Cooper's being the larger of the two.

Thanks.

Our property seems to be on a flight pattern. Every spring and fall , off our back deck, the sky is black for 15-20 minutes or more with some kind of blackbird flock. It is truly a wonderful sight to see. Just when we think it's clear more come from over the house roof. Amazing and quite enjoyable.

They are amazing. :) It must be a wonderful sight to see the birds coming right through your yard, each spring and fall. They fascinate me also. :)

I need to get busy with HAPPY HOUSEWORK (NOT) chores shortly

My expereinces here with fall birds is mostly with national park & the geese, ducks & herons which we see often. I posted this on Wed past for Warm fuzzy but it is very appropriate here today. I was biking on National Park Towapth about a week ago & saw a LOT of geese, ducks & a couple heron.. this one pix of the heron with mated pair of ducks I thought was nice.

Gorgeous Dolly. The colors are beautiful too.
I love seeing the Mallards and Herons. I've only seen a Heron 2 times. Very impressive bird!

Ah lovely thread Ms. Geebee. I just love your knowledge and fascination with birds. It certainly rubs off!!!

Was in northern Michigan last weekend with wonderful fall weather and the colors were perfect. Also, tons of Canadian geese migrating. The way they stay in formation is just amazing. Will try to post something about this later.

Have a great day!

Tapping The Treasure

READ: Psalm 119:14-24

Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law. —Psalm 119:18

Stephen May discovered a treasure while teaching literature at the University of Northern Colorado. In the library, he found 150 boxes of letters, manuscripts, journals, outlines, and notes given to the school by James A. Michener.

Surprisingly, no one was using those materials to write a biography of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, known for his historical novels. After years of research and writing, May produced a new account of the life of Michener from that great treasure.

Each day, you and I are writing the story of our lives by what we say and do. Are we using the great, but often neglected, wealth of the Bible? The psalmist wrote: "I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, as much as in all riches. . . . Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law" (Ps. 119:14,18).

The Bible is the written record through which we get to know Jesus Christ, "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col. 2:3). Its nuggets of truth are available to us all.

A life well-lived is directly related to a Bible well-read. As we live out our life story, let's be sure to tap the treasure of God's Word every day. David C. McCasland

My Bible to me is a treasure house,
Where I can always find
Whatever I need from day to day
For heart and soul and mind.  —Anon.

The Bible's treasures are found by those who dig for them.
