Writer of Braveheart making "Atlas Shrugged" movie with Jolie (my title)
Variety ^ | 10/17/06 | Pamela McClintock

Writer-director Randall Wallace wasn't about to shrug off the chance to adapt Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" for the bigscreen.

Wallace, the "Braveheart" scribe known for taking on epic themes, will begin penning the script immediately for Lionsgate.

Angelina Jolie has already signed on to star in the film, which is being produced by Howard and Karen Baldwin ("Ray") -- who hold the rights to the classic book -- and Media Talent Group topper Geyer Kosinski.

Wallace, who last wrote and directed "We Were Soldiers" for Paramount, said he and his college-age son made a deal last year to read each other's favorite books. His was C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity," which runs around 100 pages; his son's was "Atlas Shrugged," which runs more than 1,100 pages.

Hollywood does Ayn Rand -- from the writer of Braveheart and starring UN poster-moron Angelina Jolie. This I gotta see. By the way, best Objectivist movie ever: The Incredibles.

Gag me with a spoon. She's got a great body, but that woman is no Dagny Taggart. And could they choose someone more antithetical to principles espoused by Ayn Rand? I am not a fanatic follower of her by any means, but I enjoyed Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead.

I LOVED the Incredibles...actually, just rewatched it a couple of nights ago.

Great soundtrack, too.

Dagny needs to be played by Ann Coulter. Maybe Condelizzzzza.

Maybe the story line needs to be modified to "remind" the view of real-life tycoons? I mean, what would happen if Bill Gates would shut down M$? Or if Richard Branson would close his empire?

And we need to get some idea for role models for modern "mooches" too....

Go rent The Fountainhead Starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal. It's one of my favorite campy movies. Of course, it's not supposed to be. And you can't help but see the sizzle between the two stars whose notorious affair started during filming!!!!

I just saw it a couple of months ago for the first time...I know what you mean. I kind of enjoyed it, but...it wouldn't be for everyone, that is for sure.

Always thought Anthem would make a great flick. Apparently someone acquired the movie rights to it in 2004, but can't seem to find other news on its progress.

Scariest book I ever read was "Atlas Shrugged".
It will be interesting to see what kind of movie they make of it.

Well, yeah, but I people who go around proclaiming to be Friends of the World types... Starting with the starlet who is slated to be Dagny! Do we need one that reminds us of the Reverend Jahh-cksoonnnn? Instead of visiting the poor towns of northern Michigan, should we have Dagny driving thru NOLA or Detroit or Newark?

I'm just saying that one can take that story line and make it have a greater impact by updating the players and places.

I do have to wonder how they're gonna handle those 50-page treatises... will John Galt speak for 30 minutes?

It was weird wasn't it. It was like Gary Cooper was just reading from the book.

...he and his college-age son made a deal last year to read each other's favorite books.

Sounds pretty good....although I don't know where Ayn Rand is positioned in her beliefs.

BTW, in We were Soldiers..., Randall Wallace's son played the bugle-wielding french soldier who was shot in the neck and then finished off point-blank after the VC ambush of the "Frong parade".

(Angelina) Jolie is another longtime fan of Rand's, and she was eager to play the role of Dagny Taggart, the most powerful female character in any of the Russian-born author's books.

Yes...although I did enjoy the architecture in the movie, as I recall.

And the whole scene where he is replacing the broken marble in the fireplace...she definitely was into some kind of dominance thing.

No kidding. Seems almost sacrilegious to cast a quintessential "looter" in the role of Dagny Taggart.

I'm sure I'll see the movie out of sheer intrigue, but I'm already cringing at the liberties I'm sure they'll take with the fundamental principles propounded in the book. Ugh.
