Senator Santorum Comments on Release of Valuable Information in Pre-War Documents Discovered in Iraq
Rick Santorum, U.S. Senate ^ | November 3, 2006

Posted on 11/03/2006 9:04:48 AM PST by Ooh-Ah

Lewisburg, PA -- Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, commented today on a story published in The New York Times that calls to question the release of valuable information contained in captured pre-war documents discovered in Iraq.

“It is incumbent on the President, as our Commander in Chief, to hold members of the intelligence community accountable to the law if an error was made in improperly posting sensitive information on the Internet.”

“In the legislation that I authored, and in correspondence with the President, the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, I have always stressed that we must guard against the dangerous disclosure of classified information in the interest of national security.”

“Releasing captured Iraq documents is imperative to prevailing in our military campaign in Iraq. These documents are necessary to help the American people understand the nature of the threat we face and the justification for our invasion of Iraq. There are many things that need to be done in this war, but none of them will happen unless the American people come to grips with the terrible fact that we are at war, and there is no way to escape it.”

Senator Santorum introduced legislation in March requiring the Director of National Intelligence to make available military documents and photographs recovered in Iraq and Afghanistan. Specifically, the bill requires the Director of National Intelligence to make publicly available on an Internet website documents captured in Afghanistan or Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, or Operation Iraqi Freedom. The legislation authorizes the Director of National Intelligence to withhold making a document publicly available if the release of the materials would be harmful to America's national security interests.

If you think Rick Santorum is a typical pol, I really can't help you. Go read Peggy Noonan's column today, or anything Kathryn Jean Lopez has written on National Review in the last two weeks. Or David Brooks' column which you can read at Philly.com.

I think if Santorum loses next week (heaven forbid)...he will automatically become a top contender to run for POTUS...

I was wondering...I just heard Laura Ingraham restating for the millionth time..that we haven't been attacked again..

WHAT IF...the fact that we DID go into Iraq...and DID capture Saddam is THE reason we haven't??

Even Putin told Bush that he knew Saddam was planning on coming after the USA...

I am still a big believer that the WMDS DID exist in 2002...but, by the time the Congress and UN took Bush through the obstacle course...Saddam had a chance to get them out of the country.

BUT, these documents spell out a lot...and I heard today that there were 48,000 BOXES of documents...think of what is still left to translate.

Believe me, if I lived in PA I would be voting early and often for Santorum. I want him to win. And more importantly for the Dem to lose.

How can they know if the document is harmful prior to translation?

The IAEA and the New York Times claim that Iran may be using some of the technology in this FFCD which is a laughable idea as shown below.

NEWSFLASH...the article that never quite made it to the front page of the NYT:

That is probably one of the best questions I have seen asked in a long time.

Of course the answer is they will not know.

Rep. Hoekstra's response to the NYT is a thing of beauty. He denies that ANYONE warned the goverment/Congress about the danger posed in those documents.

Well, that's a fatally-flawed strategy.

This NYT story was a gift to him, and he muffed it. I hope he wins, but this was stupid, stupid, stupid.
