Though Sen. Joe Lieberman expects to win a lot of Republican votes Tuesday, the Connecticut lawmaker said he won't feel especially beholden to the GOP if he is elected to a fourth term.
"I'll owe everybody and that's the point," Lieberman said Monday as he pressed for final votes at a senior center in Meriden.
Lieberman, whose Senate career was at risk just three months ago after he lost to anti-war challenger Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary, led Lamont by 12 percentage points in a statewide poll released Monday.
Lieberman is running as an independent and has enjoyed support from the GOP, including praise from the White House and fundraising help from prominent Republicans such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
But he said his comeback since the primary has convinced him that he needs to be a stronger independent voice.
"It's taken me as an independent-minded Democrat and really empowered me to be more independent," said Lieberman, the Democrats' 2000 vice presidential nominee. "Parties are important, but they're not as important as the public interest."
Potential gains by Democrats mean the Senate could end up in a 50-50 split, or something close to it. Republicans, who have already helped Lieberman's campaign, would likely court him in hopes of persuading him to switch parties.
Lieberman has pledged to remain a Democrat.

No good deed goes unpunished.....
Thanks for nothing Lieberman......
Joe is going through what battered woman go through - he thinks the party loves him still and he deserves the abuse.
he's now the kid that follows around the cool kids even though they pick on him. He's got one hell of a bloody nose in his future unless he wakes up.
he's on with Hannity saying he'll caucus with the Dems to protect his seniority, but will vote against them when he thinks it's the right thing to do. The 'pubs should offer him his seat on the Homeland Security and Armed Forces committees with seniority if he'll caucus with them. He wouldn't be a problem there as he sees eye to eye with the 'pubs there.
Joe is doing the smart thing....if he appears too much in debt to the GOP, the Defeatocrats will use it against him today and tomorrow.
After Dems fail to take the Senate, there may be pressure on Reid to deny Lieberman his Ranking Member status...if Reid gives in to the leftie loonies..then it could be very interesting..
Lieberman needs to reinvent his thinking. He still suffers from RAT brainwashing.
Lieberman is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. Either that or he is fooling the voters that by voting for him they are not really voting Republican. This only confirms my suspicion that , despite his reputation, as a "principled" politician, he is really just he same old, same old.
I agree. Let's see what Joe says come Wednesday morning. He still has a campaign to run.
I almost agree with the sentiment. Part of me would like to see Conn. go completely far-left 'rat so we could just write the whole of New England off. Those people up there have soiled their own nests so bad they can't emmigrate out of there fast enough. Let them rot in tax hell blue states and become just like France.
Seems to me support for the Iraq war effort is not a losing position. Fact is democrats are trying to win key races this year with allegedly conservative candidates.
I don't understand the empathy for Joe around here...he is a true blue lib, rooting for him just because his opponent has the moonbat imprimatur doesn't make him any less despicable.
The Senators and congressmen from New England make national, not local policy. We will all rot in their liberal hell.
That's OK Senator, some of us want you to win just so it tweaks the noses and irks the hell out of the DNC. We'll be back to diparaging you for the many other Lieberal beliefs by end of the week.
He's still better than option B. Plus, he may just be saying that to not run off his core base. Besides that, his win still makes the Dems look like a bunch of fools.
"After Dems fail to take the Senate, there may be pressure on Reid to deny Lieberman his Ranking Member status...if Reid gives in to the leftie loonies..then it could be very interesting.."
When the RATS lose tomorrow, I don't think Reid will be in a position to do much of anything. They are going to come down hard on both Reid and Pelosi.
The potential for breaking the backs of the Lefties are upon us. Now is the time to take them down and turn Rove loose to seek justice.
What I can see is this. The Senate winds up 50-50 and then Lieberman switches parties because he doesn't want America to cut and run.
You don't have to like him. But supporting him is like sticking a finger into the radical libs eyes.
