Sandy Berger observed tearing up stolen documents
/special Report with Brit Hume | 12/21/06 | Bert

Posted on 12/21/2006 3:45:36 PM PST by bert

Brit Hume reported that the Inspector General reported that Sandy Berger was observed hiding documents under a construction trailer and tearing some into small pieces. The torn document pieces were deposited in a trash can. At some later time Berger tried to retrieve the torn documents but they had been hauled away. He then apparently tried unsuccesfullly to locate the trashman to retrieve them.

This was an important report on the events involving the Berger theft of Archive documents.

There is no question but that he was observed carefully and that his efforts to retrieve the torn up documents deposited in the trash met with failure.

The question on the minds of every DC reporter should be...... Where are the torn up pieces and did the law enforcement observers retrieve them?

I'll bet the pieces are in custody somewhere.

Does anyone care what those documents were? Is anyone asking or pursuing that obvious question?

This should've come out 2 years ago. This is absolute bulls#it!! Why does this come out now? What's the point? They've managed to cover this up for this long!

Someone enlighten me because I've been too busy at work to pay attention to talk radio during the day.

When I read the earlier reports, I did wonder who saw him and who reported on this. IIRC, when this first came out, there was some suggestion that one of the librarians had actually alerted LE, since Berger did this over several trips to the library. In addition, while the head librarian was replaced shortly after the whole thing came out, he seems to have cooperated at some point (after his initial response, which was to call Clinton's lawyer!).

I doubt that anybody has the fragments, though.

If they're not, then we have to ask WHY, if they saw him doing all of this, no one intervened or took him into custody right then and there.

Yes, and some have said it's not the documents themselves (which have duplicates) but what Clinton et al wrote in the margins.

Fantasy headline: Former ambassador Joseph Wilson asks federal judge if he can hide in Sandy Berger's pants.

Does anyone know why we have a national archive that doesn't also scan every document and have it on a hard drive?

Can you imagine the outcry if Condi Rice did this? Instead, the media largely yawns.

Berger was just trying to encourage recycling.
He was just working on his version of the IRS' "Paperwork Reduction Act".

It was on FR when the theft first happened. The purpose was to purloin earlier versions of a memo, before the final one, which were vaguely incriminating in some way.

Free Republic thread on the subject.
