A Few of FR's Finest ....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :) If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

I just got this in an email and it was confirmed by snopes. This cannot be tolerated, May I suggest we send them a message, I will.

APO'd
Claim: A U.S. Army soldier received a rude response from an on-line retailer after inquiring about shipments to APO addresses.
Status: True.
Example: [Collected via e-mail, 2007]
Below is an email exchange between a friend of mine's husband and a company that sells different types of mats. He is stationed in Iraq and was inquiring as to whether or not the company ships overseas. He wanted to get the troops better gear to sleep on. This is the companies response. I am floored. I am floored as a military wife and as an American. Please repost this so that this company will hear us loud and clear that we do not stand for this. Whatever your view is on this war - these troops are just following orders. Most are passionate about what they are doing. You can disagree with the war without disrespecting our troops.
From: SGT Jason Hess
Sent: Tue Jan 16 3:25
Do you ship to APO addresses? I'm in the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Iraq and we are trying to order some mats but we are looking for who ships to APO first.
From: contact@discount-mats.com

Subject: Re: Feedback: from discount-mats.Com
SGT Hess,
We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.
Bargain Suppliers
Discount-Mats.Com
Origins: APO (Army Post Office or Air [Force] Post Office) and FPO (Fleet Post Office) addresses are part of a military mail system used for exchanging mail with U.S. Personnel stationed outside the United States, generally at the same domestic rates
charged for sending mail within the U.S. Military personnel, their families, and others who have had occasion to order merchandise for shipment to troops stationed overseas have generally learned to first check with the vendors to ensure that they will indeed send product to APO/FPO addresses. Because shipments sent to APO/FPO addresses require extra processing (e.G., they must be sent via USPS, mailed from a post office, and accompanied by customs forms) and involve additional mailing restrictions, not all businesses are willing to accept orders intended for APO/FPO destinations.
The e-mail exchange reproduced above took place in January 2007 between a U.S. Army soldier serving with the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq and online retailer Bargain Suppliers Discount Floor Mats (
http://discount-mats.com/index.html) of West Allis, Wisconsin, with the former inquiring about whether the latter would ship floor mats to APO addresses. Not only did the retailer reportedly respond in the negative, but they couched their turn-down as the rude statement that "We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq."
Discount Mats did not respond to multiple inquiries, but Sgt. Hess wrote back to us and confirmed that the correspondence was real:
This is all fact and true what happened. I'm with the 1st BCT 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq just trying to find someone to send supplies that we needed.
(He also said that he appreciates the support of the many people who have asked us for his e-mail address in order to provide him with the mats he was seeking, but he asked that we not give it out as has already found a supplier and is being bombarded with e-mail.)

Planting peace: California farmers help U.S. soldiers make a statement in Iraq
Issue Date: January 17, 2007
By Jim Morris
Soldiers received help from California farmers in an unusual effort to encourage peace in Iraq. Master Sgt. Patricia Marsano was among those who made the tree planting a reality. In a country most often associated with violence and despair, U.S. soldiers and California growers have teamed up to plant the roots of peace.
Just before Christmas, U.S. soldiers at Camp Anaconda in northern Iraq planted 200 olive trees around their 15-square-mile base as a gesture they hope will symbolize a peaceful future for the region.
"The olive tree is a symbol of peace around the world, especially in the Middle East," said Joe Sabol, retired agriculture professor from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo who helped coordinate the tree donation. "When the soldiers told us they wanted to improve the looks and environment of their base and leave a very special gift for the Iraqi people, it seemed like something we could do easily."
Sabol represents California Rare Fruit Growers, which worked for four months to help facilitate the request.
Iraqi citizens also participated in the ceremony. He was among a network of Californians involved. Burchell Nursery in Oakdale provided the trees at half-price, with company President Tom Burchell packing the trees himself, complete with stakes, cardboard sleeves and planting instructions. FedEx agreed to cast aside the $2,000 shipping bill. The trees' 8,000-mile journey went from Ontario to Memphis, then to Paris and Dubai, before finally making it to Balad, Iraq.
Sabol said the project request and much of the details came from Master Sgt. Patricia Marsano of the 164th Corps Support Group, whose enthusiasm and thorough communication skills yielded positive results.
The planting ceremony was spearheaded by the Army Reserve unit and was attended by two U.S. Army colonels and three Iraqi citizens who work on the base.
"It's a small contract for friends," said Maithan Saeed, Iraqi citizen and translator on the base.
Olives are revered in Iraq, not only as part of the Muslim faith, but for practical reasons. Oil of the fruit is used for cooking, medicine, cosmetics and lamp oil, while the timber is also utilized. Those who gathered for the tree planting said they hope it bears abundant fruit, both real and symbolic.
"It represents the very essence of why we serve, and ultimately represents the hope for this nation and for the peaceful existence of all the people of Iraq," said Col. Megan P. Tatu, commander of the 164th.
Sabol said he hoped similar tree donations would occur in the future.
"If other bases on Iraqi soil or maybe even around the world could look at their own military base and say, ?What could we do to make this place a little more attractive and peaceful?', I think this might be the beginning of something a lot bigger than we first imagined," he said.

I have quickly moved on to next year.. The Patriots at one time wanted to draft my nephew when he was a kicker. It was to late the Bronco's picked him up, as soon as the season started they cut him...
That was all about football politics, the Bronco's didn't want Nathan picked up by anyone. He is now a Paramedic.

You Watch The Moon
You speak of moonlight, while I sweat,
Your evening hasnt got here yet.
The moon you see, will shine for me,
As I lie down with memory,
My worries, and the days heartaches,
And all the pain from my mistakes.
I gather calmness from the dusk,
And breathe the scents of evenings musk,
The twilight brings the evenings calm,
And confidence from your songs balm.
For you have seen this day and night,
And found it not a source for fright.
You faced the challenge, and in time,
Incorporated it in rhyme.
You walked with Day and held its hand,
While you stood strong in a foreign land.
The heart of evil that will try,
To harm us must first face your eye,
And you will cause its force to wither,
Before it dares to journey hither.
We thank you then for standing there,
While we sleep soundly without care.
Your loved ones and a grateful nation,
Protected from Wars desolation,
A world away, but held so close,
Each of us missing what we love most.
Take heart that as you watch the moon,
Your task will end, youll come home soon.

I wish there was a way of getting the MSM ro report some of the good news from Iraq.
Every day they seem thrilled to report any American deaths. I pray and cry for each one. I would like to read in the local paper some of the good our men and women are doing. Wouldn't you think they would have reported this since it is a local story?

If true, it is inexcusable. The person writing that e-mail should be fired.
