Fruit's natural sugars a no, no - Edwina Farley "Australian and New Zealand fruit growers are worried new draft standards for health claims on food, could mean certain fruits are considered unhealthy. Food Standards Australia New Zealand has released draft guidelines governing nutrition and health claims made about food. Under the draft, foods with more than 16 grams of sugar per serve can't be advertised as healthy, ruling out fruits like mangoes, grapes and apples."

Under these guidelines, bananas would be considered unhealthy also because they are high in natural sugars. Scientists make no distinction between natural and refined sugar.

I don't care what any "scientist" says about apples! I will continue to eat an apple a day cuz it keeps the doctors away. This is the truth.

Insanity.

An apple a day may not truly keep the doctor away but it does help certain bodily processes function in a predictable manner.

Right, and it's a huge difference. Two mangoes a day would enhance health, two cokes a day can create all kinds of problems.

So, the apple folks start selling the things with a sticker. "This apple provides 3 servings. Each serving contains less than 16 grams of sugar. To avoid too much sugar, DO NOT eat all 3 servings in one day." Put a label on each grape, too.

Or, better yet, somebody kicks "Food Standards Australia New Zealand" in the ass.

If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.

There is a huge difference between eating apples and drinking apple juice. In the juice, the calories are much more dense, you might as well be drinking a can of Coke. With an apple itself, the sugars are less concentrated.

Oh FGS. There is a huge difference between refined sugar and sugar in natural foods like fruit.

Fruit is designed to be eaten and to keep the eaters healthy - fruit wouldn't fulfill its function if it acted as a slow poison. The sugar in fruit comes packaged with all the vitamins and minerals needed to digest it properly without messing with the body's vitamin and mineral balance.

Refined sugar is a whole different matter. Try feeding an animal on nothing but refined sugar (and water) and it will die.

An apple a day is fine. Your body needs it.
The problem comes when idiots eat twelve a day because they are just pigs.

The point is that your body doesn't distinguish between natural and refined sugar. It's all processed the same. That said, of course it's better to consume fiber and vitamins with your shot of sugar than it is to take it straight up.

Yep. As a diabetic, I stay away from fruit juices as they would contribute to an immediate rise in my blood sugar. I can, however, have a small apple, berries, and tho I tend to avoid them, half a banana at a time.

It's the fiber in the fruit that lessens the effect on blood sugars and makes them better for you (and certainly for diabetics) than juice. If I had a small child I would severely restrict the amount of fruit juice - it's like giving a kid a box of sugar water. I don't know what parents are thinking to load their kids down w/so much juice.

Fruit is bad for you? It's back to the beer, chocolate, salt, fat, coffee, etc...(will pass on cigarettes).

Not a big deal for me. I can't stand the smell of an apple. I've had to warn people not to start eating their apple, unless they were ready for me to throw up. I don't know what it is, but that smell makes me sick.

Dr. says nothing is wrong with me. That is the only fruit that affects me. Pears, which are almost the same fruit, don't make me sick.

Eating an apple a day keeps doctors away? I thought the proverb was about throwing them at doctors.

My absolute favorite fruit is the New Zealand Braeburn apple. The U.S. Washington Braeburn doesn't even compare. I live for springtime when the harvest starts to show up here in Wisconsin.

From what I understand, New Zealand has one of the most fertile soils on the planet and is loaded with nutrients. Hence the very healthy and delicious produce.

Someone needs to stomp on this organization and tell them to leave what nature produces alone. Many of us already cut our fruit in half to reduce the servings size.

This is obviously a fundamentalist scheme to enlist scientists to create an hysteria over apples which will eventually be used to promote the idea that original sin was caused by Eve giving Adam an apple. A Kyoto like treaty will be proposed to trade sin credits. America will need to buy credits from non apple eating countries. Coca Cola will come to the rescue with high fiber sugar free diet apples recycled from horse apples.
