My Hero is Gone
February 4, 2007 | Delaney's Girl

Posted on 02/04/2007 7:15:40 AM PST by Heart of Georgia

My dad passed away February 1, 2007. He was a veteran of two wars, and he was truly a hero, but you couldn’t get him to agree to that, ever. He’d always say, “No, I was just doing my job.”

You could try, but a more patriotic man you would never find. During WWII and the Korean War, Dad was a builder of bridges and a mechanic for the planes he often times was heard referring to as, "a bucket of bolts."

He was born in Rosemont, West Virginia, the son of a coal miner. Not an educated man, he never thought of himself as very smart, but tell that to the USAF. He won an award for his invention of a valve that's now standard on all jet engines. And he devised a way to make one model work better mechanically by swapping out engine parts of another model. The Air Force deployed him all over the country, and at times overseas, to train others in this technique.

Above and beyond his service to this nation, he's my personal hero. A man dedicated to his family first and foremost. He's a true picture of what our heavenly Father intended fathers to be. There's not a time in my life when he wasn't there for me, and I know everyone in his life would say the same thing.

My parents built their retirement home in West Virginia. When they got to the point of not being able to mow the lawn, etc., they sold out and I moved them to my home in Georgia (where they had raised me after Dad retired from the Air Force).

I've been taking care of my dad for almost two years now, and I feel like I should be in the kitchen baking him biscuits.

As it is, I'm getting ready to take some pictures over to the funeral home for a tribute that they do.

We'll have visitation today, with the service being tomorrow. He'll be laid to rest in Canton, Georgia, later this week at the new veterans cemetary there, and with the honors that he earned and deserved.

I love him so much, and I miss him. There's a huge knot in my stomach, and my heart is completely shattered.

I've dreaded this day my entire life, and here it is a reality. I covet your prayers for me and my family, especially for my mom. Thank you to all.

Would you mind pinging the prayer warriors? I've held up pretty well, but there's still a lot to face in the coming week.

Bless you, Heart. And may God send you and your family peace. Dad's should live forever! I guess they do, though, in our hearts.

You have my prayers and those of my wife as well.

Both my parents are gone now for some years ago. Losing a parent is a tremendous emotional dislocation -- it takes a long time to grieve and adjust.

Find peace in Christ and let the emotions flow and the rest of life to go on. This is His way and He will be with you.

God bless you, your family and your wonderful father who is now enjoying his just reward. What a tribute you are to him and to his life! I think that no one can ask more of life than to love and be loved, and to be remembered fondly by all. Your heart, though shattered, will heal and you will be the better for it.

May God give you comfort. My prayers are with you.
