Space shuttle astronaut arrested at OIA on attempted kidnapping, battery charges
Orlando Sentinel ^ | February 5, 2007 | Henry Pierson Curtis

A NASA astronaut is charged with attacking her rival for another astronaut's attention early Monday at Orlando International Airport, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

Lisa Marie Nowak drove from Texas to meet the 1 a.m. flight of a younger woman who had also been seeing the male astronaut Nowak pined for, according to Orlando police.

Nowak -- who was a mission specialist on a Discovery launch last summer -- was wearing a trench coat and wig and had a knife, BB pistol, rubber tubing and plastic bags, reports show. Once U.S. Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman arrived, Nowak followed her to the airport's Blue Lot for long-term parking, tried to get into Shipman's car and doused her with pepper spray, according to reports.

Is there a positive ID, the eyebrows and upper eyelids look different. She does look like somebody else I've seen before, but I don't think I want to go there.

In both your cases, you were getting at least SOME sleep - on a semi-regular schedule, correct?

Try going four days with NO sleep and then tell me how normal you feel - if you're still able to type, that is.

Try going two weeks without sleep and let us know if you can still remember to finish brushing your teeth.

The type of sleep deprivation I'm thinking of goes way beyond what you've described.

Yes, the AF has short-term confinement facilities - but if the sentence was over a certain number of years (was it 5? I can't recall exactly), then they went to Leavenworth.

All I remember is that in 1995 I not only got a 'date rapist' convicted, but also sent him to Leavenworth for 6 years. The judge threw the book at him. He would have been better off with a jury, but his civilian defense lawyer made a bad tactical mistake to go 'judge alone'.

P.S. It wasn't really a date. He lured a member of his squadron to his pad under the pretense of watching a football game and then attacked her.

Thanks for the response - I just couldn't see what he did as being criminal enough to land him in jail - it kind of shocked me. I HOPE that didn't happen, as that should not be construed as criminal; otherwise, a lot of us would be in a whole lotta trouble (not saying any more), unless, as you said, there were other mitigating factors.

Actually, you do that in any state and you'll wind up in jail. There are laws against that sort of thing (clandestinely taping people without their knowledge - video camera or sound recorder, it makes no difference).

Many a tail-gunner have jumped out of bedroom windows too.

I guess I date myself. Yes, when they automated the tail guns on the B-52's they cross trained a lot of the tail-gunners into other fields. They stuck out like a sore thumb though. They had made Msgt for the third time. Wings and ribbons all over the chest when other guys that served in the nonflying jobs only had a few ribbons.

And this didn't show up in any psychological testing?

In all fairness, what does it say about the Navy's evalutions, since they gave her that fourth stripe?

At least she'll never make admiral after this little peccadillo.

I have also heard that people who want to play a slot machine for an extended time will go the diaper route. *shudder*

I didn't know you could be a meth head and still be an astronaut.

Question: Does the time spent at a service academy count towards retirement?

Does the term 'Ensign' ever pop up these days?

OMG I can remember the images as I'm reading the script.

IIRC the skit ended with a big long star cruiser ramming the other round ship ... maybe they should have called it innuendo space.

No, but it does count towards number of years for determining the amount of the pension...

She looks like a pretty hot little number - how the neck did you find that? I searched and found nothing!
