JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee (AP) -- Two inmates housed in a smoke-free prison traded a hostage for cigarettes after a six-hour standoff.

[...]

"As the night progressed they started saying, 'Look, we'll give up if you let us have some tobacco. If you do that, we'll go back to our cell,"' Carlton said. "They got them some cigarettes, they smoked them and went back to their cell and locked themselves back in."

[...]

Prisons across the state are instituting no-smoking policies after the Legislature passed a law banning smoking in state buildings.

"Prisons across the state are instituting no-smoking policies after the Legislature passed a law banning smoking in state buildings."

Well that's pretty idiotic. It's not like the inmates have a choice of whether to patronize the prison or not, or go outside. I'm not a smoker, hate the smell of cigarette smell but you can't just legislate away an addiction. I can't believe the prison guards would support this ban as it would put their lives in more jeopardy from whacked-out smoker inmates.

Meant to say, hate the smell of cigarette smoke. Been working on company taxes all day and I'm a bit burned out.

What do they expect to happen when they take a drug away from a bunch of junkies?

Back in my DWI days a jail guard told me that the non smoking jaid did nothing but create a whole new set of problems.

What does this teach the children?

Hold their teachers hostage until they can smoke in the classroom? :)

Can't have deathrow inmates exposed to that nasty second-hand smoke.....for "health" reasons.

We let illegal aliens run loose in this country, but the Smoke Nazi's are after legal citizens' rights....

Is this a great country, or what?

My Poli Sci teacher held class in the lunchroom so the class and he could smoke; played poker at my house too, lousy poker player.

And why not. Aren't cigarettes supposed to help someone relax? Isn't that part of their allure? Without them you have a black market for cigarettes, increased smokeless tobacco use (along with dental problems and mouth and jaw cancers), irritable inmates, nervous guards and a recipe for explosions inside the prisons. If they cared about the inmates (and guards), they would require attending a smoking cessation course a condition of parole.

The ban is stupid.

That said, so was giving in to their demands.

Lesson learned: enforce stupid fascist laws and terrorism pays.

Let me get this straight: Taking away someone's freedom, their job, their family, their ability to move, and their personal effects is okay. But taking away their cigarettes is an egregious violation of human rights.

It's prison. It's not supposed to be pleasant. Only humane and rehabilitative.

Equally stupid. When a person has no choice in staying or going, the ban is sheer lunacy. ;o) Every parent knows not to impose rules they aren't willing to enforce.

No, but you do not have to accomodate addicts who are in jail. Don't like the non-smoking policy of jails? Don't come back.

Hell, even the Geneva Conventions makes it a violation to keep prisonors from their smokes. Considers it inhumane.
