The Security Council "statement" criticizing Iran's continued "detention" of 15 British Royal Navy sailors is only the first step in what may turn into a major diplomatic attack by London, say U.N. diplomats.
The watered-down statement, unexpectedly accepted by British Ambassador to the U.N. Sir Emyr Jones Parry late Thursday, while criticizing the Iranian move, only demanded immediate access to the soldiers by British consular officials.
It did not address the claims and counter-claims about whether the Royal Navy violated Iran's territorial waters.
However, on Monday, the UK assumes the monthly rotating presidency of the Security Council, followed by the United States in May.
During April, London will be able to control the Council's "program of work," putting itself in a central position to use the U.N. body to exert even more diplomatic pressure on Tehran.
The feeling among Council diplomats was that the Thursday statement on Iran was approved by the British not so much for what it said, but more for use as a "springboard" for harsher measures should they be needed while it chairs the U.N. body.
Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton again told Fox News on Friday that the U.N. "must move beyond press statements."
Bolton told FNC that a second video of a British sailor "admitting" trespassing into Iranian waters was yet "another example" of Iran's defiance of international laws.
While the issue of additional sanctions on the Islamic Republic has not yet been discussed inside the Security Council, it may, should the standoff continue well into April.
It is no secret that the White House intends to make Iran the number one issue if the crisis has not been resolved by May.

Yeah, them diplomatic attacks sure hurt.
What on earth is a diplomatic attack?
I hate to see the UK go through this
Yeah. That'll have the ayatollahs shaking in their sandals.
This is beyond pathetic. True Britons must be ready to storm Buckingham palace and demand something better . . . . . something stronger.
The impotent floundering from the clueless media is becoming surreal. I guess this type of story is meant to reassure the outraged public, or at least the portion of the public that still has enough testosterone present to be outraged.
I'm sure the media will soon pooh pooh any talk of military action while forcefully remembering the European public that it would be a grave mistake to get their immigrant muslim population riled up.
They're denouncing in Iran's general direction.
"Diplomatic attack." I thought this was Scrappleface when I saw that headline.
Their diplomats have the latest in peace-fighting technology and equipment, and they have factories that produce them all over Britain (they're called Univiversities.) They are fully prepared to come out victorious in any contest of a peace-like nature.
Diplomats are just as essential in starting a war as soldiers are in finishing it. -- Will Rogers
Neville Chamberlain is alive and well!
A mild tongue-lashing.
The mullahs no doubt are quaking in their boots.
The problem is that due to internal politics Amikeynutjob wants an attack to rally his eroding support internally.
Different problem different strategy and tatics..
It is really sad and pathetic. Yep the terrorist regime in Iran is so scared now because of this "diplomatic attack" (extreme sarcasm).
You might call it a peacing match.
In their defense, the only thing I can think of is that something larger was and is already in the works for Iran,so they're not going to be goaded into an early strike. (I know I'm grasping here. GSTQ)
Smart move taking the 'statement' from the Security Council. Next week they have the chair and pretty much run the agenda, the US to follow. The smart play is to wait for control and then push the harder, harsher resolutions. Make the council put up or get the hell out of the way.
Finally ! Battle Stations, FULL ALERT !!
