CORZINE INJURED IN PARKWAY CRASH
He has broken bones and breathing tube, faces months of rehab
Friday, April 13, 2007
BY DEBORAH HOWLETT AND JOHN P. MARTIN Star-Ledger Staff
Gov. Jon Corzine suffered numerous fractures to his leg, breastbone, collarbone and ribs last night when the SUV carrying him from Atlantic City to the governor's mansion swerved and bounced off a wayward vehicle along the Gar den State Parkway, then slammed into a guardrail, officials said.
The state trooper driving the governor, and an aide to Corzine riding in the car, also were injured in the accident, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in Galloway Township.
A police helicopter flew Corzine, 60, from the crash scene to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where surgeons worked last night to repair the broken bones.
Robert Ostrum, chief of orthopedic trauma surgery, said Corzine was lucky to be alive. "He's had significant injuries, multi-system inju ries," Ostrum said last night.
Corzine spent about two hours in surgery and was transferred just before midnight to the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition, hospital officials said.
A spokesman for the governor, Anthony Coley, said Corzine suf fered 12 broken ribs and fractures to his collarbone, left leg, sternum and a lower back bone. The inju ries, he said, "were not life-threatening" and Corzine didn't appear to have suffered brain or spinal cord damage.
Ostrum said Corzine's femur broke in two places, a compound fracture that tore a gash through the skin. During the surgery, doctors inserted a pin in the leg.
Because of the rib injuries, sur geons inserted a tube to help Cor zine breathe. Ostrum predicted that the governor would require at least two more surgeries, plus three to six months of rehabilitation.

Isn't this against the law in NJ?
That being said, I wish the governor a speedy recovery. This is nothing to laugh at - it's quite serious.
Given the injuries listed, it sounds like the governor may not have been wearing his seatbelt.
It will be the drivers fault for not insisting that Corzine have his seat belt on.
The liberal way......blame someone else!
I was listening to WABC this morning and some idiot had the nerve to say it was Imus fault.... “ but if” he did not have to go meet with the Rutgers Basketball team and Imus.”
Perhaps if the NJ voters were smart he would not have been elected.

He was not wearing his seatbelt, that much is known. Stupid on his part.
I was thinking the same. If that were us, the insurance probably wouldn't pay for our injuries.
What? To sit in the front passenger seat? Are you joking?
If you meant the speculation about not wearing a seatbelt, you should have mentioned that instead.
Yes, I meant to say that in Post 1--forgot the seatbelt part. He was in the front seat and not wearing a seatbelt. I think that's against the law in NJ.
New Jerseys Seat Belt Law:
(NJS 39:3-76.2f)
* Applies to all passenger vehicles including vans, pickup trucks and SUV's, that are required to be equipped with seat belts.
* Applies to all passengers, who are at least 8 years of age but less than 18 years of age, and each driver and front seat passenger of a passenger automobile, operated on a street or highway. All occupants are required to wear a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt system.
* Makes the driver responsible for proper seat beltuse by all occupants who are under the age of 18.
A minor thing, I agree but, not the best example a governor could set.
Wow! Another accident? Didn’t he just have one yesterday?
I believe that it's against the law in all 50 states - Clinton's federal highway funds "blackmail" made sure of that.
Regardless, the laws are only for the "little people" - a democRAT governer shouldn't be expected to have to obey them.
If he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, in FL it IS the driver’s fault........$75 per person........
LOL (guiltily)
I don't think so...my wife and I frequently drive through NJ and, inevitably, one of us is always sitting in the front passenger seat.
I guess even being a billionaire doesn’t guarantee you have common sense.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist. I don’t know how many times I have already seen this. Even Fox News thought it was of utmost importance for us to see the highway patrolman being put into the ambulance — not once, but multiple times.
I wonder if he was in the front seat, in the middle, with the driver’s hand on his knee. Now that would be news....
Most won’t say this so I’ll be the proxy. I don’t care if he recovers or not. My prayers will not include him (he’s way too far down the list).
