Alec Baldwin apologizes after fiery rant at daughter, 11 [breaks silence]

Alec Baldwin issued an apology on Friday for unleashing a volcanic tirade at his 11-year-old daughter and blamed "certain people" for leaking the rant to US media.

The Oscar-nominated star of "The Departed" branded daughter Ireland a "rude, thoughtless, little pig" in a fiery voicemail message that emerged on celebrity websites on Thursday.

It is the latest twist to the bitter legal wrangling between Baldwin and ex-wife Kim Basinger over custody and visitation rights relating to Ireland. The couple split in 2001.

Baldwin's tirade was apparently triggered by Ireland's failure to switch her mobile phone on for a scheduled call with her father.

"Once again I've made an ass out of myself trying to get to a phone at a specific time," Baldwin says in the message. "I'm tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted me for the last time.

Please think about that for a moment. You’re not talking about a football team or a sales force! this is his freaking daughter! She’s eleven years old! What if you’re eleven year old told you that you weren’t worthy of his/her respect, and not only will he/she not take out the trash as you told them to, (or do you ask them nicely?) but they show you contempt because you cussed them out and now they need some time for you to prove that you are worthy of their respect! I’m sorry, but that is sad! Alec Baldwin is that girl’s FATHER, remember your stone tablets “Honor thy mother and father”? What, unless their flaming libs? Then you can just spit on them? LOL!

if my daughter is supposed to call me every such and such a day at such and such a time, then she better make damned sure she’s on that phone, and I don’t care if she’s six or sixty.

Your statement "she better make damned sure she’s on that phone" has a CLEARLY threatening ring to it and now you backpedal and say "Then I would leave a voicemail to tell her that I didn’t appreciate the disrespect that she showed me" . But alright, you win.

FNC is cracking me up with the little screaming face in the corner of the screen on Hannity and Colmes.

Baldwin is a scumbag.

No, everyone does NOT verbally abuse his or her children. Some do not get so enraged that they lose complete control, and many, even when angry, do not stab their children in the heart with their words.

Do not dignify this evil behavior by saying that 'everyone does it.'

If any of us had been married to an Alec Baldwin, we too would do most anything to prevent him treating his daughter this way. I suppose the reason for the breakup was his irratic anger and behavior. I suppose Kim knows better than anyone what he is capable of doing to that daughter.

Wow! I am sorry that you are so sensitive. CLEARLY threatening, huh? Gee, I don’t know what to say. I probably have anger-related issues that require years of expensive ‘therapy’ that will help me pinpoint my violent nature with the rough manner in which I was potty-trained. Say, what’s the name of yours? I’m sure you can recommend somebody.

Thankfully I had two parents who would have never spoken to me like this. That said, if they did I would carry out the chores out of obedience, but not because I respect them.

You'd do well to understand that you can force your children to be obedient while they're young even if you berate them as Baldwin as done. At some point they become adults, and then all you have left is their respect (or lack thereof).

Again, respect is earned. It is not accorded due to position or authority. And that isn't an opinion - it's a truism.

No, everyone doesn’t do it, but probably too many people do. He’s suppose to be an adult. This is a little girl. He is a punk.

Words that attack the worth of a child are the most damaging thing a parent can do to their offspring. It doesn’t matter how many ‘nice’ things are also done. They never balance it out because the words strike at the CORE of the value of the human being. In the workforce, an old but sound statement is: one ‘sh**’ cancels out 100 ‘attaboys’.

An excellent example of this dynamic is: If a parent tells a child that they are a ‘piece of s***’, or ‘stupid’ (a popular term used by these types of parents) and then later praises that child in front of strangers, the child (regardless of age) concludes that the parent is lying to ‘save face’ in front of the stranger.

The public praise that contradicts what is said in private is very damaging because the opinion of the parent in private carries more weight. Instead of making the child feel good, the child concludes that they are so bad, and the parent is so ashamed of them, that the parent has to lie to strangers about the child.

It is complex, but children place themselves as the responsible party regardless of the situation and what a parent says to the child in private is carved in concrete in the child’s mind. It never goes away. Ever.

The best analogy I can give you is this: if you had a job wherein your boss berated you in private over and over again, blew up at the smallest event, told you that you were stupid, told you that you were lucky to have the job because you obviously couldn’t get another one, that he keeps you on only out of the goodness of his heart, how long would you choose to stay in that environment?

Now add this to the scene: a visitor comes to the workplace and your same boss tells the visitor that yes, his workers are the best! Which version of your value to your boss would you internalize? Over time, a healthy person would want to literally bust the guy in the chops.

Adults can leave this situation. Children cannot. They internalize EVERYTHING that their parents say about them and accept it as THE truth, period. Over time they either become like their parent(s) and do the same to their kids, or they distance themselves from the parents in one way or another (including withdrawing into themselves). For girls, the normal pattern is for them to marry a male who talks to and treats them in the same way.

Before Alec called his daughter, he was on David Letterman making fun of her. ...thus she did not answer his call.

Could you tell us more about that? What did he say?
