The Progressive Conservatives party’s defeat in 1993 wasn’t really due to it abandoning social conservative principles as it was to it implementing a very unpopular national sales tax in order to reduce a deficit in the middle of a recession. Previous PC Prime Minister Mulroney also pandered to Quebec, which annoyed many Westerners. Kim Campbell and her handlers also ran an inept campaign, including a running very ill-fated attack ad making fun of the Liberal leader’s appearance.

The main lesson from the Canadian experience is that the more socially conservative Reform/Canadian Alliance party there couldn’t make much inroads into more socially moderate Ontario or Quebec until it socially moderated a bit when it merged with what was left of the PC. The party’s leaders were often portrayed as scary theocons with a “hidden agenda”, even though there really wasn’t one. Social conservatives need the help of fiscal conservatives in order to win elections in Canada as much as fiscal conservatives need help from social conservatives. That's probably true south of the 49th parallel as well.

He has set himself squarely in the Internet media spotlight, doused himself with gasoline, and and lighted himself on fire - a fact that has not escaped the attention of the left-wing lunatics at Daily Kos.

Oh whoopde-f***ing doo. What does Jim care what a website run by some doofus from Berkeley that looks like his brain has been baked by some combination of bong resin and MDMA says about conservatives and FR??

Watch out Jim, the Kos Kids are on to us! LOL, I needed a laugh today...

Al, I don’t know you or Jim very well at all, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. So I’ll share my thoughts on abortion and homosexuality.

1. Abortion. An unborn child has every and all characteristics of human life, and therefore has a right to live. 1] It is human, 2] it is living, 3] it exists (as in ‘being’. 4’ it has a unique DNA identity and fingerprints and heartbeat. Calling it a fetus (a Latin term), doesn’t change the facts.

Giuliani’s non-chalant attitude towards millions of murdered humans is alarming to say the least. I’m not saying anyone else will do better or worse. We’ve had few victories in the war on abortion. What is your attitude or belief about abortion, and the president’s oath to uphold the Constituion, which protects human life? Would you rather be ruled by the Constitution, or by a panel of judges?

2. Gay rights. Gays have bullied lawmakers into doing what they demand. Most of the country rejects homosexuality as a viable lifestyle. Giuliani doesn’t seem to care. He give homosexuals what they want, and treats their disorder as normal and healthy. What are you thoughts?

Tell me, Al, what do you think happens to a country when it accepts abortion and homosexuality? Have you studied this subject and its history?

Many of us want to protect America and its citizens, especially its children, who are absolutely not capable of protecting themselves and discerning right from wrong.

If it is true, as we believe, that abortion and homosexuality will continue to destroy people, and thus the nation, what if anything are you willing to do about it?

You should ask Jim Robinson about the rape charge. He got mad enough about the post, the first time, that I am sure he remembers. It did become a bit of an issue during the 2000 campaign, but like the Juanita Broderick rape, there was no proof and the media didn’t touch it. Just another he said, she said. But if you want to read a whole lot of stuff about John McCain, google John McCain / Amy Silverman. She’s a reporter who has been dogging McCain for years. She hates him.

Check the Congressional Record, or ask Jim Robinson. I’m sure he remembers.

The Progressive Conservatives party’s defeat in 1993 wasn’t really due to it abandoning social conservative principles

As you pointed out #449, the lengthy Liberal rule was not good for Canada. But the lengthy "conservative" rule following it managed to alienate Canada's conservatives.

as it was to it implementing a very unpopular national sales tax in order to reduce a deficit in the middle of a recession. Previous PC Prime Minister Mulroney also pandered to Quebec, which annoyed many Westerners.

Yes, well, raising taxes and pandering to Quebec radicals are not exactly consistent with conservative principles.

Kim Campbell and her handlers also ran an inept campaign, including a running very ill-fated attack ad making fun of the Liberal leader’s appearance.

There was a lot of stuff brewing before the collapse of the PC. And it came to a head when the average Joe Conservative could finally put a face on it and wonder 'why the hell do we have a moonbat, Kim Campbell, as the leader of a conservative government?" Hence the hilarious, crushing defeat that followed, with the embarrassing aftermath that the PCs became the butt of all jokes. And rightly so, when when stop to think of how cynical a view they must have had toward the conservative voter, in assuming any moonbat should do the trick, as long as she is slightly to the right of some other moonbat.

The main lesson from the Canadian experience is that the more socially conservative Reform/Canadian Alliance party there couldn’t make much inroads into more socially moderate Ontario or Quebec until it socially moderated a bit when it merged with what was left of the PC.

Perhaps, but my view is that Reform absorbed the PCs because it could use their existing infrastructure. Reform had almost no presence in the east. What is the lesson from all this? One lesson, among others that you mention, is this - don't present a moonbat to the public as the leader of a conservative party.

Isn’t it a little too soon to be setting our hair on fire, here? Guliani may be the best of the field; he may not. We don’t even know who else is going to run yet, so I think it’s premature to get all in a tizzy just because someone’s favorite isn’t everyone’s favorite.

Well, you can always wait to see if McCain gets the nomination and then wait for Hillary’s war machine to dig it up. Actually, she can’t do that can she? Then, someone would bring up Juanita Broderick.

Joe, I note that you are from North Dakota, but did you and your family ever travel to NYC before Rudy, or during Rudy??

I grew up about 50 miles from Washington D.C.. When I was in NYC in '74 it seemed pretty much like any other large city, except the people were generally more rude and the buildings were taller. It was dirty, had trash, etc., and winos and junkies, pretty typical.

If you want to see a clean big city go to Toronto. They don't even have trash in the alleys.

...but Rudy when he was tasked to transform himself from the DA to the mayor; deal with a totally unmanageable city/state; take on the gangs, pimps, street, homeless, welfare, squeegies, taxes, corporations, bloated city government???

And he got the criminals where, exactly? If they aren't at the intersection with a squeegee they are still around. It looks better, it feels better, it just isn't in your face, but it is still there, isn't it?

Is the city government smaller? Still got gangs? Did the corporations (um, how did 'corporations' become evil?) leave?

Are the streets better (I thought the pothole was the state flower when I was there.)

Balls? You want Balls? Look at Bill Clinton. He had balls. He would do what he wanted when he wanted, damn the Constitution or the law!

I'm not sure just having Balls is enough.

Discretion counts for one hell of a lot. And if he has such big ones, how come he didn't inform his ex-to-be face to face? Now that takes balls.

Besides, at the moment not too many people would want his balls. Especially if they have a set of their own.

Ok, so he had to be a big city realist re gun control with murder all around him, abortion, social issues, but he sure got NYC turned around: it’s crime infested unmanageable city became a entity of the past.

From out here in the sticks, gun control looks like it still invites criminals to do their thing, simply because no one but the cops can do anything about it. Granted, the police population in NYC exceeds the population of most counties in my state, but our system of letting those who want to carry a firearm works, and we don't even have to buy all those firearms, just ours.

By our standards, NYC is still crime infested.

How does living in a big city make abortion any less murder?

As for "social issues" What? did he get rid of poor people?

Look at one simple fact, what "works" in a very big city will not work in most of America. Not only is the population density too small to make it economically feasible, but if the people here wanted to live in a big city, we would. We don't, and by choice.

Applying what "works" in NYC to the rest of the country would be a disaster.

If anything, you have convinced me even further that someone who would apply that paradigm to more rural areas and has the "balls" to push it is definitely NOT what we need.

Al Simmons was born with his hair on fire
his tongue in a knot
and his feet in a tire.

He didn't have time to make good choices
he had bridges to burn
and he thought he heard voices.

He made his mark on a conservative site
by veering far left.
He wasn't too bright.

He put up a thread for all to see,
though few would care,
he was out of his tree.

Exaggerations won’t sway us toward nominating a radical anti-conservative for the presidency. And apparently, you feel that Mr. Farah tried too hard to accommodate readers of more religions than one.

So let me make sure I understand...

If you support a guy who's very early polling looks good but who's stated positions are in opposition to conservative ideals, you're a rational mind. But if you don't support him, then you are a Neanderthal, illiterate, brown shirted thug who drags his knuckles from one fight to the next, irresponsibly bludgeoning the faithful for merely following their hearts.

Did someone miss nap time today?

I would write in SJackson, or A51, or any of the recently banned freepers before I would vote for Rutie. Rutie is a non starter period. He would be as bad or worse as many of the Dems you named.
