FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.

Honoring Canteens

Join us as we take a look back in history at some Canteens. A look at who and what made up the Canteens of the past.

There are two types of Canteens. One is

But, the kind we'll be discussing here will be this:

Wikipedia lists Cafeteria when you search for Canteen as a place:

** A cafeteria is a type of food service location in which there is no table service, whether a restaurant or within an institution such as a large office building or school; a school dining location is also referred to as a canteen or dining hall. Cafeterias are different from coffeehouses, although that is the Spanish origin of the American word.

One of the most outstanding volunteer efforts in history were the track side canteens for servicemen and women at the railroad stations around the United States during World War II. Citizens at over 125 cities around the United States operated track side free canteens for the soldiers, sailors, marines and aviators in WWII. They provided dedicated service to millions of troops passing through on trains.

Volunteers greeted soldiers on every train with friendly smiles, welcoming words, and baskets filled with food and other treats during the brief moments their train paused at the railroad station. Service men and women could get sandwiches, pies, cookies, cakes, coffee, milk, magazines, newspapers, writing paper and sundry items, all free, and all donated by residents in their respective communities and immediate region. At Towns like Reno, Nevada; North Platte, Nebraska; Bellefontaine, Ohio; Lima, Ohio; Troy, Ohio; Clinton, Iowa and Connellsville, Pennsylvania, local groups recognized a greater need to provide a little food, a few moments of comfort and distraction at track side.

In the weeks ahead, we'll take a look at some of these Canteens. Canteens who were there for the morale and welfare of our military in time of war. And, the people who made personal sacrifices to be there for those military. To give back to those who gave so much.

So, please join us and discover what it means to be a Canteen.

I was OFF - I got to see the Derby from the comfort of my own living room, for the first time in three years!

And we cheered on with the jockey’s infectious joy, all the way around his victory lap!

Well my FRiend, it's good to be back to normal today.

I'm no longer on 24 hour call, I didn't have to go to Milwaukee today (after grumbling at having to), the 60 foot part of a tree that snapped and fell into my yard from the neighbors yard from the winds yesterday missed my house and has been cleaned up without my help, and I'm relaxing.

So whats new with you? ; - D

How cool is that....your own living room.

I don’t pay much attention to the lead up, but as it gets closer it gets exciting, and then the rain, and who knows. I REALLY enjoyed the replay from the overhead camera...seeing Street Sense near the back and then shift gears....wow!!

Hi!! Glad you aren’t on call anymore. That stinks! Also glad that you didn’t have to go to Milwaukee...better you should “have” to come back to Texas. At least there you would have friends who would meet up with you and show you more fun! :D

I did NOT have a 60’ part of a tree fall into my yard. I was off today and did a little cleaning, a little FReeping and took a nap. All in all, a perfect day. Plus it’s not hot today and that helps my mood.

Glad you didn’t have to clean up the tree parts. Hope the rest of your week is good....with no more high winds!

I just finished a nice little nap! :D

Also glad that you didn’t have to go to Milwaukee...better you should “have” to come back to Texas.

I would opt for the likes of San Antonio over the likes of Milwaukee ANY day! ; - )

I'm still waiting for that emergency road trip to Honolulu however....

One can dream can't they?

I went out tonight after work to start cleaning up the remnants of "tree felling" and as luck would have it, two minutes later is was pouring rain and still is. (it could be worse, it could be that "s" word!) /snicker

You are celebrating because the weather is warm...and I am celebrating that it is cooler...75. There is a wonderful breeze blowing through the house and it’s sweet with the scent of flowers.

I am glad you had a great day in spite of the fact that I know you went to work. It must have gone well there for you!

Plus it’s not hot today and that helps my mood.

Well then, if getting too hot spoils your mood then I'll do my best to cater to your comfort and try to stifle my "HOT" charisma! (ducking and covering)

We got temperatures in the upper 70 low 80 and it is supposed to stay warm on my days off.
We have a breath going and i have all the windows and doors open so it feels cool in the house.

Every thing went well at work.

You get that “emergency” road trip to Hawaii and we’ll have a celebration for you! LOL! But San Antonio is a very good second choice. Maybe that one will come up sometime. Just let everyone know! :D

So you’re getting rain. Yes, it ia a much nicer version of heavenly water rather than the “s” word. :D Hope it’s going to make your yard beautiful. Have the trees gotten their new leaves yet up there?

Our poor trees are on their third try. First they got frozen off, then last week the hail knocked them off. They look rather ragged for it being May.
