He is the only Republican, outside of a handful in the House and Senate, that understands what America is and the dangers that she faces. ROTC courses are an exception to my earlier concern about teaching military history at a university. What were the courses like?

I also took a Women's studies course as a G.E. requirement at a UC. It was no worse (or better) than the average social studies course as far as I was concerned. From my perspective that is damning with faint praise though.

I believe strongly that the open-minded quest for truth that was supposed to be the credo of higher education, and the Ivy’s as icons of higher education, is not the norm any more. It’s tragic, and needs to be fixed.

Good luck with that. I think it's a fundamental flaw in human nature to cling to one's opinion long past the point of reason, from all sides of the political spectrum, and all walks of life. By the time most people get to college it seems to me that their character is relatively fixed. I know some exceptions of course.

Depends on the university. Mine offered “History of Strategic Bombing”. It was fascinating.

Thompson has his Tennessee mafia organized and ready to ride at a moment's notice. There are exactly two critical questions. 1) Do they realize that the press which is (largely) largely fawning on Thompson from afar, will peck him to death like a pack of ducks beginning the day he declares, and 2) Have they arranged to have in hand upwards of $100 million, which will be needed mostly for media advertising in the "national primary" in January/February.

Unless they have solved these two problems, whatever they are doing is meaningless.

There are a lot of things about ‘human nature’ that are maladaptive and that we need to learn to transcend. I have great faith in what human being can be, and a well-grounded and experience-based pragmatism regarding the lows that human beings can sink to, including myself. We can all do better, and I absolutely agree with you that human beings from all across the political spectrum and from all walks of life tend to be dogmatic in defense of their opinions and positions. I also, however, have great faith in the ability of people to change. And, cliches about teaching an old dog new tricks aside, I believe people of all ages can change and grow. I hope that’s true, or I am toast.

I would say more curious than fawning. Even the supposed "conservative" press has not been "Fawning". Have you not seen the hit pieces? Even Newt's flirting has not generated hit pieces yet.

Yes, for a couple of weeks the press "reported" the oddity of the FDT grassroots groundswell, but have just as quickly begun to turn, now that he is not responding to THEIR pressure to announce. He not dancing to their tune.

The press is like a bored child; Easily amused, quickly bored and easily angered. "Fawning" was McCain 2000. That was fawning. Fred got his 2 second media honeymoon. I'm sure he knows that as well as you do. Furthermore, I'm sure the Tn Mafia is well aware of it and planning for as well.

As Yoda might say, Require a PhD in Political Science, it does not.

When I read that, I went right past it, having seen it referred to as a battle 1000's of times in the past. I suppose, though I'm not sure it is, I have come to take the reference as a metaphor.

While an armed battle it was not, certainly a battle of will, courage, and sheer mental and physical stamina were fought, and a victory of the spirit was won during that dismal winter at Valley Forge.

And when we emerged prepared, healthier, and better trained, with the help of the French (who'd a thunk it?), we took the battle to the Brits.

In light of the context, however, I can see, clearly, that-that assumption would be wrong, and so would be FRed. Perhaps he was thinking of the actual Battle of Monmouth, which Valley Forge had prepared us for?

In either case, thanks for pointing that out. I might have just glanced over it, like I have so many times in the past.
