Those Who Cannot Remember the Past [THE FRED THOMPSON REPORT]

Those Who Cannot Remember the Past

If you went to college in the sixties, like I did, you might not know how much higher education has changed since then. Universities today are different places. At Vanderbilt, where I got my law degree, I hear you can take courses in third wave feminism or colonial governmentality.

Your guess is as good as mine.

On the other hand, some of the courses that we took for granted aren't around at all. One area of study that's almost disappeared from universities today is military history -- the history of warfare.

I was reminded of this recently, reading a piece in The New Republic by historian David Bell. He's certainly not the only person to mourn this change, though. One of my favorite historians, Victor Davis Hanson, wrote on the same subject several years ago in National Review.

There are a number of reasons that military history is no longer taught. Partly, it has to do with the ideological shift in university faculties over the past few decades. The post-Vietnam anti-war movement tends to see all wars as mutual mistakes -- with both sides in a conflict equally wrong. Some of these folks think war can be avoided by refusing to have anything to do with it.

Hansen thinks it also has something to do with the spread of nuclear weapons during the Cold War. In an age with intercontinental ballistic missiles, the old subjects of strategy and tactics can seem obsolete. The importance of battles at Valley Forge or the Alamo might not be evident if you're thinking of warfare in terms only of pushing big red buttons.

The enemies of civilization, though, have adapted -- as they always do. Nuclear deterrence won't protect you if the other side thinks they win if we all die together. Furthermore, they've learned to hide among the innocent. Iran's missiles, nestled among civilian neighborhoods and UN outposts in Lebanon, were fired into Israel -- but Iran was never hit back. The British and the Spanish have discovered, through terrorist attacks on bus and train lines, that the enemy is studying us daily. They learn our every weakness by living and working among us – but our schools have stopped offering courses that would help us meet their challenge.

All of this means that if there were ever a time to put our best minds to the study of warfare, it is now. I know that, for many people, it's an unpleasant topic they would just as soon avoid -- but history that ignores the importance of warfare is not history. There is a reason that both sides in the Civil War studied Sun Tzu’s “Art of War” – though it was written in the 5th or 6th Century BC.

Hansen writes, "The hundred years of talking about slavery was not as important as two days at Gettysburg. The success or failure of Normandy affected Hitler more in an hour than had years of pleading with him in the 1930s."

If for no other reason than that we want to avoid war whenever we can, universities should at least offer the option of studying it. We know that students would sign up for the classes, because books on the subject are always reliable sellers. Television programmers have also responded to the sizable hunger for military history.

These alternate sources of information are important, but they don't replace the need for serious scholarship in our universities. If you agree, I have a suggestion.

One thing we know for sure about colleges, they're better than bill collectors at tracking you down. If you ever took a single class, you'll be asked for contributions the rest of your life. Next time you get one of those calls, ask that student fundraiser to pass on the message that you'd probably give more money to the old alma mater if the school were offering more classes in military history. It's worth a try, anyway.

You don’t think that battling the elements to just survive counts as an important history lesson?

This man knows the America that I love! He truly needs to be our next President. He is the only Republican, outside of a handful in the House and Senate, that understands what America is and the dangers that she faces. Bush knows also... and that is why his agenda is so frelling hard to understand!

ROTC courses are an exception to my earlier concern about teaching military history at a university. What were the courses like?

I also took a Women's studies course as a G.E. requirement at a UC. It was no worse (or better) than the average social studies course as far as I was concerned. From my perspective that is damning with faint praise though.

I believe strongly that the open-minded quest for truth that was supposed to be the credo of higher education, and the Ivy’s as icons of higher education, is not the norm any more. It’s tragic, and needs to be fixed.

Good luck with that. I think it's a fundamental flaw in human nature to cling to one's opinion long past the point of reason, from all sides of the political spectrum, and all walks of life. By the time most people get to college it seems to me that their character is relatively fixed. I know some exceptions of course.

“ROTC courses are an exception to my earlier concern about teaching military history at a university. “

Depends on the university. Mine offered “History of Strategic Bombing”. It was fascinating.

Thompson has his Tennessee mafia organized and ready to ride at a moment's notice. There are exactly two critical questions. 1) Do they realize that the press which is (largely) largely fawning on Thompson from afar, will peck him to death like a pack of ducks beginning the day he declares, and 2) Have they arranged to have in hand upwards of $100 million, which will be needed mostly for media advertising in the "national primary" in January/February.

Unless they have solved these two problems, whatever they are doing is meaningless.

There are a lot of things about ‘human nature’ that are maladaptive and that we need to learn to transcend. I have great faith in what human being can be, and a well-grounded and experience-based pragmatism regarding the lows that human beings can sink to, including myself. We can all do better, and I absolutely agree with you that human beings from all across the political spectrum and from all walks of life tend to be dogmatic in defense of their opinions and positions. I also, however, have great faith in the ability of people to change. And, cliches about teaching an old dog new tricks aside, I believe people of all ages can change and grow. I hope that’s true, or I am toast.

The maintenance of Washington's Army in the conditions of Valley Forge is one of he great marks of Washington's indomitable leadership. I am concerned, however, that Thompson's researchers are making small but obvious factual mistakes in these weekly articles that are the heart of Thompson's campaign.

Thompson’s gotta run. I like what I read every time.

Same here. We have GOT to have him in the White House, the country desperately needs this kind of common sense and communication ability.

Fawning?

I would say more curious than fawning. Even the supposed "conservative" press has not been "Fawning". Have you not seen the hit pieces? Even Newt's flirting has not generated hit pieces yet.

Yes, for a couple of weeks the press "reported" the oddity of the FDT grassroots groundswell, but have just as quickly begun to turn, now that he is not responding to THEIR pressure to announce. He not dancing to their tune.

The press is like a bored child; Easily amused, quickly bored and easily angered. "Fawning" was McCain 2000. That was fawning. Fred got his 2 second media honeymoon. I'm sure he knows that as well as you do. Furthermore, I'm sure the Tn Mafia is well aware of it and planning for as well.

As Yoda might say, Require a PhD in Political Science, it does not.

Fred needs to hope that the rumor’s true that algore is going to enter the race late.

Fred’s a Vanderbilt Law graduate. algore’s a Vanderbilt Law dropout.

Fred needs to ask him how he can envision being president when he can’r even graduate from law school.

algor is the Left’s favorite boy. algore will take the Left down with him.

I stand corrected. The MSM is being kinder to Thompson than to most politicians. However, it ain’t fawning, the likes of which McCain enjoyed last time.

Just use keyword: "FRED" for the definitive list of Fred Thompson stories on Free Republic.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: Beelzebubba is not an official spokesman for the FRed List. As a matter of fact he's not even on the list. The main keyword to index Fred articles on FR is "fredthompson". That is the keyword that has been used since January. The use of 'fred' or 'thompson' is optional.

If you have any questions about the list or would like to be added, please contact Politcalmom or myself.

When I read that, I went right past it, having seen it referred to as a battle 1000's of times in the past. I suppose, though I'm not sure it is, I have come to take the reference as a metaphor.

While an armed battle it was not, certainly a battle of will, courage, and sheer mental and physical stamina were fought, and a victory of the spirit was won during that dismal winter at Valley Forge.

And when we emerged prepared, healthier, and better trained, with the help of the French (who'd a thunk it?), we took the battle to the Brits.

In light of the context, however, I can see, clearly, that-that assumption would be wrong, and so would be FRed. Perhaps he was thinking of the actual Battle of Monmouth, which Valley Forge had prepared us for?

In either case, thanks for pointing that out. I might have just glanced over it, like I have so many times in the past.

:O)

BTW, if FRed runs, he still has my vote. :)
