McALLEN The proposed 370 miles of new fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico is now planned as a single layer of fence, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman said.
Since Congress passed the Secure Fence Act last fall it was widely expected the fence system would be composed of two fences separated by an access road, allowing U.S. Border Patrol agents to quickly approach people sneaking across. While details on the fence, which will vary from locale to locale, are still being worked out, CBP spokesman Mike Friel said only a single layer of the barrier would be built by the end of 2008.
We have things called fence labs down in Texas which evaluate a number of different fence designs, Friel said.
They look both at whats most cost effective and how the fence performs.
Of the 370 total fence miles to be built the length of the border, 135 miles are planned for Texas, a substantial portion of which are to be built in the Rio Grande Valley, which the Border Patrol has identified as a smuggling corridor.
While a single layer of fence should be better received than two layers among landowners and conservationists, a strong degree of skepticism continues to exist regarding any DHS statement regarding the fence.
The problem is you hear one thing one day and one thing the next. Every time I talk to them its a new story, McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez said.
Were told some of its going to be virtual, some iron and steel, some concrete. Who knows?
DHSs statement on the fence comes just as U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, is working to modify the Secure Fence Act, which passed Congress last year and called for more than 700 miles of double-layered fence by March 2009. Under a proposed amendment to the immigration bill currently under debate in Congress, the act would require that only 370 miles of fence be built and lose all language detailing the fences location.
A lot of people up here talk about a fence, but they dont understand the fence runs through some of our cities, Hutchison said.
I talked with the Texas delegation (Thursday) morning about what weve done, and now theyre gong to try and make sure it goes through the House intact.

NO fence = NO border
No Border = NO US
what the hell!...and what is Tony Snow doing trying to pawn off this crummy deal on talk radio. I think he would be better off resigning.
These are the same people who say “trust me” when it comes to enforcing the new proposed amnesty bill.
Tony Snow has always been an open borders advocate. That's one of the reasons Bush picked him and one of the reasons I never thought he was as great as some here think.
It was supposed to be 2 layers of fencing with a road in the center for BP agents to use. Every new revalation reveals another lie they have told us.
Regards
Just wait until the Mexicans invent the ladder.
or minefield
Yes, if Tony Snow wants a future in talk radio, he needs to resign. He can believe the manure he’s shoveling. I know he’s a spokesman, who speaks for the President. The President may believe what he’s saying, but it’s simply not true. Tony has to realize that it’s not true, therefore he’s lying and ought to resign.
It’s a virtual fence, it only exists in the minds of people inside the Beltway.
Oops, it ought to read ‘he can’t believe’.
bttt
Bush and Chertoff are not to be believed WRT ANYTHING they say.
I no longer trust either one of them, and I no longer support Bush on anything, including the WOT.
Checkpoints manned by a more militant BP/State Guard constructed in the Israeli mode would not be amiss.
But,....I guess none but the people are interested.
The polititurds certainly are not.
Why on earth do cities exist straddling the border?
Rather than not build a fence, pull the fence back so it encircles the city from the American side, cede the territory to Mexico rather than leave a gaping hole in the fence. That, or divide the city in two with a fence.
Our southern border is 1952 miles long.
370/1952 = 18.9%
What a joke.
