Vanity: My Response to a Rudy Fundraiser Letter

Mayor Rudy Giuliani
c/o Rudy Giuliani Presidential Committee, Inc.
295 Greenwich St, #371
New York, NY 10007

Dear Mayor Giuliani,

I am writing in response to your recent fundraising letter to me asking for a campaign contribution for your Presidential race.

Mayor Giuliani, you most likely had my name on your mailing list because I was strongly prepared to support your candidate for Senator from New York in the 2000 campaign. You had not one, but two chances to “beat Hillary”, in both 2000 and 2006, and each time you declined to run (in the first instance, dropping out of the Senate race and leaving the New York Republican Party scrambling to find a replacement candidate). Unfortunately, this now leaves the national Republican Party in the sad situation of having Hillary Clinton as a “popularly elected two term Senator” who can run a credible campaign for President.

It seems rather odd to me that you are now prepared to “win” nationally against Hillary or another Democrat when you were unwilling or unable to take her on in your home turf of New York. Certainly it would a lot less time and trouble to win over the popular vote in the one state where you are most well known than have to campaign in all 50.

I supported your candidacy in 2000 because it was clear to me that you would govern more conservatively than the outgoing Senator, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and obviously better than Hillary Clinton would. You are now running to succeed President Bush. Do I believe you will govern more conservatively than him? NO. On the contrary, on a whole host of issues, ranging from abortion, to gun rights, to traditional family values, you have governed far to the left of any Republican President in memory. President Bush has been disappointing in several areas such as spending and immigration, but overall he has done the right thing. Having you to take over the reins from him would be a giant step backwards for the GOP.

In short, Mr. Mayor, I hope you are not “blessed to be our party’s nominee” because you are so liberal you have said in the past you would run on the Democrat line “if I could find a way to do it”. You may be right on the war on terror, but so is your mayoral predecessor Ed Koch, and as I’m sure you’re aware, he is no Republican. I am a traditional, pro-life, pro-family, lifetime liberty loving Republican and your “values” do not represent mine. I do not see what your candidacy can possibly bring to the table as you are far too liberal to be nominated nationally and there are a whole host of good conservative Republican presidential candidates right now, including many with proven track records of winning over Independents and being elected in “blue states”.

My advice to you is to drop out of the race as soon as possible and consider endorsing the candidacy of a superior candidate such as Congressman Duncan Hunter, Governor Mike Huckabee, or my personal favorite at this time, Governor Tommy Thompson. You might end up with a better-suited position in government, such as director of Homeland Security, if you do so.

I cannot and will not support you for president in the Republican primary.

Best Wishes,

.
.

I received a letter from Rudy's campaign in the mail asking me for a donation. I have no idea how I got on his mailing list (as I noted in the letter, probably from signing up to his email updates during his aborted 2000 Senate candidacy)

In any case, Rudy's campaign was kind enough to include a prepaid "reply" envelope, so here is my reply to his campaign.

The letter goes out on Monday. I hope he takes the advice. ;-)

Sounds reasonable. The whole ‘Rudy’ star value is rather disturbing.

IMHO:
Consider removing the underlines. Distracting.

Your words either stand on their own or they don't. Underlined words and words in bold do not make a better letter.

Good point. Interesting enough, they’re not in the original letter I typed up on MS Word. The type font was different and much easier on the eyes to follow. I added them for the FR post because the preview looked boring in plain text.

I was right with you, until this point of the letter.

:o)

Regardless, a great letter. Good job.

(in [2000], dropping out of the Senate race and leaving the New York Republican Party scrambling to find a replacement candidate).

It is understandable that he dropped out in 2000 while being treated for cancer. You do have a great point about 2006, though.

Oh, bull. He wasn't stricken enough to resign as mayor, was he?

He was afraid of Hitlery. And with good reason. He couldn't beat her then, he can't beat her now. This is all a big Rudi ego trip (like everything he does) and an attempt to revive the Rockefeller Republican wing and return control of the party to the northeastern liberal Republicans, easily the most repulsive wing of the party and the group whose leadership in key RSCC/RCCC/RNC positions led directly to our 2006 defeat.

If these liberals want to vote for lower taxes and strong national security, we'll welcome their votes. But this is the Party Of Reagan, not the Party Of Rockefeller (and Giuliani).
