Sex-Ed Cliffs Notes - Do women get pregnant because they lack information?
OpinionJournal.com ^ | June 1, 2007 | Naomi Schaefer Riley

A few weeks ago, a study by the Mathematica Policy Research Institute concluded that abstinence-education programs do not delay the age at which teens first have sex. The response from the left was predictable: "We've spent billions of dollars and we don't have anything to show for it, so it is time for this Congress to fund programs that work," William Smith at the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. told USA Today. The study's conclusion that teens in abstinence-only programs were no less likely than their peers to use contraception apparently didn't faze Mr. Smith. (Somehow they're getting "sexuality information" without benefit of formal education.)

When is society going to start mentioning men as the possible culprits?

All the church-going catholic girls were the first ones having babies in my little town. Strict parents and religious education included.

At least they had their babies though (the ones we knew about anyway).

I would think it’s because the young ladies don’t keep their knees together. But I could be wrong.

so the young ladies don’t keep their knees together and BINGO they get pregnant??? Nothing else happens, no one else involved. All this time I thought it required a male and a female. Who would have guessed it only took a lady?

You want a society more neutered than now? Because that may not even be possible.

Oh come on. Old argument. Being responsible does not equal neutered.

Do you know "today's" girls? They instantly send their boyfriends packing. The guys can't stick around if they wanted to.

You'd think the burn-outs I knew would learn someday, but no... they mostly stayed single- going out with their girlfriends every weekend, drinking and taking home whatever guys they met. Same old mistakes with them, they never learn.

My wife of 39 years and I both went to the same Catholic schools for 12 years. We first had sex when I was 17 and she was 16. Looking back, we believe it was simply that biology won over theology. We liked each other, and we acted on it. We have been together ever since. Our grandkids now attend Catholic schools, which is now our biggest concern..

Sorry, that dog won't hunt with the current generations of females
that are strong, independent and "need a man like a fish needs
a bicycle" (to quote Gloria Steinem, who forgot her own propaganda
and finally got married).

Please...no flames. I'm just playing the devil's advocate and
telling you what a CONSISTENT hard-core feminist activist would
have to say on the subject.

BUT VERY SERIOUSLY....
Actually, I'm in agreement with you to a large degree. I'm currently
incensed at the attempt of liberals to deflect criticism of
abortion clinics as the great ally of males that rape/abuse
underage females.
By killing the evidence of their misdeeds created during statutory
rape...but hidden from law enforcement by "privacy concerns".

So that pedophile (more specifically "ephebophile") males
can skate scot-free and repeat their misdeeds with more under-age females.

I have no bone to pick with you. I’ve been anti-feminist for over 30 years.

I think the point is, not that people have sex and get pregnant, but that we’re spending billions of dollars teaching these kids, essentially, nothing. Sex ed programs are for naught.

Women are not responsible because all sex is rape.

Well the last time I checked, it took two to get pregnant. They may not keep the guys around, but they had to be there to start with. I am not saying it is the fault of either one, only that both are involved and both should take responsibility. I was the result of one of these relationships, and spent most of my childhood going into and out of foster care and group homes. It sucked. I blame my mother and father equally. I asked my mother what she was thinking at the time. Her answer, “I thought he was very handsome.” I don’t know if she knew anything about birthcontrol, but clearly, that wasn’t on her mind at the time.

I told my ex wife while were married that she was fertile the most 3 days before or after a period and she believed me. I had one child through her at my choosing. It is absolutely ridiculous how dumb some people can be.

Mathematica Policy Research Institute

I wonder how they get away with using that name.

This may be slightly OT, but I cast this as a an argument of a larger concern than includes this topic.

Society has played a roll together in successfully lowering the standards of behavior so that the consequences of bad decisions are "blurred and unclear" at best. I'm thinking that many women raised in such an environment to do actually see themselves as overly responsible for their behavior nor the consequences of it. Abortion has been marketed to them as no more controversial than a stop in the restroom. Life and responsibility for life has been trivialized. That, plus public education has left them with no more personal skill advanced beyond know how to put a rubber on a banana. Well, they probably did that, the banana's on the counter. Why did they get pregnant?

OK, not that bad... Stil, it's a given that men and women today are arriving at their teens and adulthood without the essential tools for adult survival and the sense of responsibility for their actions is barely intact. The nanny state is slowly destroying their sense of independence and personal accountability.

The current culture is weening them towards a life of socialist servitude.

All teens, some teens, start sexually active vs frequency, locker room vs reality. So many factors to spin in so many ways.

The question is, do we try to hold our children to a standard that says they are better than dogs because they can control themselves or do we send the message that they are simply slaves to hormones and they have no hope of having self control over their bodies and their desires.

Personally, telling my daughter she is no better than a dog in heat is something I'm not ready to tell her.

I grew up during the 1960-70s, with the teaching that premarital sex was inevitable and that those saying something different were fooling themselves. As a young teen, I felt social pressure to engage in sex and I complied. Of course, now, I wish I hadn't. The predominant view seemed to be that you were not a "mature" until you had sexual experience. I gleaned this from my peers (especially the "mature" boys), the media and even my own parents (although I'm sure they were not aware they sent me this message). I attended a suburban public school. My husband attended Catholic schools and his experience mirrors my own.

As an older woman, I met several women my age who married as virgins. They seemed to come from a subculture all their own, which I knew little about. Most of them attended evangelical type private schools. I have kids in these schools today. I monitor their emails (without their knowledge) and find that they and their peers do indeed value purity. They have this "determined innocence" which I would have never dreamed possible in the later teen years. Societal pressure works both ways. You just need to create a good society.
