Palestinian gunmen have broken through Israel's heavily-fortified Gaza border and battled troops inside Israel for about two hours.
The raid was an abortive attempt to abduct an Israeli soldier in which one of the gunmen was killed but the military said no soldiers were harmed.
Islamic Jihad said it carried out the attack, near the Kissufim crossing, along with the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent offshoot of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement.
Israeli aircraft responded, the military said, attacking a building used by Islamic Jihad officials and an arms workshop run by what it called "Fatah militants".
Palestinian security officials said damage was caused at both sites but there were no casualties there.
They said, however, that two people were injured in a third strike near another Islamic Jihad office.
The Kissufim attack was the first incursion into Israel from Gaza since militants killed two soldiers and abducted a third a year ago.
The Israel military said troops shot dead one of the raiders. Palestinians said another three militants escaped back to Gaza unharmed.
Abu Ahmed, a spokesman for Islamic Jihad, said that four militants broke through the Gaza border fence and launched an assault on soldiers.
He said three of the militants returned to Gaza unharmed, but Islamic Jihad fighter Mohammed Jaabari, 19, was killed in the fight.
Please, G-d, protect Israel...
Amen.
So, Olmert, how is that Gaza pull-out working out?
Did we ever get a resolution to the Gilad Shalit situation? Israel needs to show disproportionate force in their responses to the Gazans.
