Excellent post. Thank you. I will be bookmarking it.

My fiancee has been waiting 4 years for his greencard and there no end in sight. For some reason (his lawyers fault or bureaucracy?) he has to resubmit paperwork he sent in October of 05. He also just got notice that the fees will be going up soon. So even though he submitted his paperwork ages ago, and made the required payments with it, he will have to pay the difference between the increased fee and what he paid. Just because it’s taking so frigging long to get the GC.

And this is for a legal immigrant!

I always joked that we would be married before his GC came through. We’re getting married 2 July. Looks like I was right.

Criminls plea bargain all of the time. Punishments vary. Paying a huge fine is not RECINDING their action , it is punishment for.
Your idea of justice is that all criminial go to jail for every offense?
Yes a stroke of the pen AND meeting the requirements would change their status, so what?
If all you want is them out, then I guess nothing else does matter to you.

To get to it in Thomas submit search for S.1348.
When the bill comes up pick "Link to the Bill Summary & Status file."
Once there pick "Amendments"...result...Items 1 through 150 of 350 4. S.AMDT.1150 to S.1348 In the nature of a substitute.

The Senate is making it hard for the public to follow it so there's no telling what the end result will be.

In a perfect world, it might be reasonable to say that everyone here illegally should be deported. Law breaking, obviously, cannot be ignored. But if that were possible at all - which is very dubious - the cost would run far into the billions.

This argument has been refuted many times. If we stopped allowing illegal aliens access to government assistance in all forms we could easily pay for the deportation of these people.

Well, there has to be some reason this bill is 800 pages long. Think of all the pork that can hide in all those paragraphs.

Who the Hell is going to pay fines when they don't have to because they have been made legal? And how many are going to jump through the hoops to attain citizenship? Pay fines, go home, come back, go to the back of the line, etc.?

If all you want is them out, then I guess nothing else does matter to you.

When someone comes into your house, takes part of your food, steals part of your money and then gives you the finger you ask them to stay?

Do you consider paying a fine for any other misdemeanor offense a consequence? $9000 and 10 years later is not fine enough or payment enough?

When you pay a fine for stealing, you don't get to keep what you stole. You must also pay restitution. The fact that they benefit in the end from their lawbreaking makes this a fee, rather than a fine.

Your numbers are all wrong, and grossly inflated (which tells me you've been following MSM reporting and not FR or most conservative blogs).

The Z1 fine is $1,000, payable in installments, with $200 due upon application, and the rest payable at an indeterminate "later".

The Z visa is a permanent residence document, with the right to travel abroad.

People in China, India, Pakistan, and elsewhere all around the globe can and do willingly pay human smugglers $20,000 to $50,000 just to get inside the U.S. border, with zero documentation.

As a comparison, countries such as Belize, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam require from $35,000 to $100,000 in locally-invested funds in order to qualify for anything even close to permanent residence. I believe the U.S. requirement is $1,000,000.

The point is that permanent residence has a price in most if not all countries. The $200 "fine" is that price for illegal aliens.Yes. That's amnesty.

There are of course the normal application fees for renewal of the Z visa, and a one-time $500 state impact fee.

But the $4,000 "fine" you're including in your numbers is bogus. That's completely discretionary and only assessed on application for Permanent Residency (green card).

Now, since I have a permanent Z visa, and can live and work in the U.S. as well as travel back to Honduras every other year, why do I need PR status?

Total cost for 10 years under the Z visa isn;t "$9,000", it is a maximum of $1,000 fine + $500 use + $1,500 application + $1,500 4 year renewal + $1,500 8th year renewal = $6,500 maximum. That's a $1,000 fine in installments, and $4,500 in app fees over 10 years.

I paid more than that in car taxes over 10 years.

But he didn't, because the self-designated "base" was unwilling to discuss or permit discussion of alternatives to the unrealistic, draconian things they were advocating. Their constant ridicule and obvious hatred of the President probably did have a lot to do with getting Dems elected and ultimately worsening the conservative position. And I think it is driving conservatives away, because any attempt at rational discussion is met with invective and rage.

What is this, a joke?

There haven't been any brutes here telling people, "Don't discuss the alternatives." There has been free and open discussion.

Sorry, but the boy you choose prefers not to be whipped.

Tony goes to Fox & Friends to speak to people, who aren’t very informed on the bill. Why doesn’t Tony go on the Mark Levin Show, speak to a lawyer, who read the bill and thoroughly understands what is in the bill?

Because he knows he will be handed his ass to him!

THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAS TO LIE ITS ASS OFF TO SELL THIS!!!! BUSH IS LYING WHEN HE SAYS ITS NOT AMNESTY!!! REMEMBER THAT!!!!

I got to “S.AMDT.1150 to S.1348 In the nature of a substitute” on thomas, but after that the text did not seem organized.

Note that virtually everything that happened in the Senate was an amendment to 1150, not to 1348. Even the cloture votes were about 1150, the White House amendments, and not about 1348.

What these people are being asked to pay is way more than most misdemeanors require. Calling this amnesty is just incorrect.

Criminals also have to make restitution. If a criminal breaks into a house and gets caught, he doesn't get to stay if he simply pays a fine.

Also, when a person guilty of a misdemeanor pays a fine, that doesn't mean that he is then granted immunity from the charge if he does it again. If a guy trespasses on private property, he doesn't get to go there anytime if wants if he just pays a fine.

Most people call the illegals “criminals”. Crossing the border is only a misdemeanor, mostly paid for in fines, generally punishable by less than a year in jail.

That's true,as far as it goes, BUT most of the illegals break other laws as well including laws that are felonies.

It is a felony for an alien to work here without a work visa. It is a felony (perjury) to submit false information on a W-4 form. It's a felony in most states to submit false information on a driving license application. It's also a felony in most states to drive without a license.

These are just a few of the serious crimes most illegal aliens commit. They are forgiven all these crimes too. Plus, there is NO fine for anything if they just stay here as "probationary" legal residents.

What these people are being asked to pay is way more than most misdemeanors require.

Ask Scooter Libby if getting off with a $5,000 fine is a sweet deal for a perjury rap. Why treat illegal aliens better than we treat citizens?

The real crime is the people hiring them and harboring them. That is a felony. That’s where the focus should be. The real criminals are the Americans!

The Bush-Kennedy-McCain amnesty bill gives the criminal employers amnesty for their crimes committed prior to its passage.

Calling this amnesty is just incorrect.

Calling this anything but amnesty is incorrect.
