You both looked wonderful in your wedding photos.

Is cibco dealing with real piggies or people who behave badly?

It is the Feds job to make it both easy and accurate to verify legal status of possible future employees.

Employers should be able to go online securely to a government Web sight and be able to verify social security numbers. When they run a check a picture of the person with that social security number should come up. Then it would be much easier for an employer to know if the number provide is bogus or not.

The only requirement of the employer is to run the check and heed the results.

I am an employer.

This is a mess. My fear is this bill is going to make it all a much bigger mess. Tony tells us over and over that securing the border comes first- but that’s simply not true. The first thing that happens is all the illegal aliens immediately have LEGAL status.

I just shake my head- I don’t trust this administration anymore.

On Quinn and Rose radio show today, they were talking about all the pork place in the bill.

I heard that, too. Apparently, the Senators thought this bill was a sure thing, so they loaded it with their pet pork projects, figuring it would sail though. Now they're desperate to pass the bill to make sure they get their pork.

I think what one concludes, between this issue and things like Muellers use of the FBI counterterror plane for his personal junkets, is that this crowd has been in Washington too long, is too arrogant and complacent, and have lost the public trust. They cannot solve this issue because they just lack the bonas fides to be "honest brokers."

I think we need to leave it for the time being, move along, and see if the next crowd can fix it - they probably can't either.

Ok--just watched Tony's segment. He said that while enforcement for the 1986 bill was a "joke," THIS time, it would be different.

They said the same for the 60s bill, for the 80s bill, and for the 90s bill. They have no intention of enforcing the new one, after the shellgame shuffle to get it signed.

If they did, they would be enforcing now. Look at the hoodwinking from last year with the National Guard. That was the one of the biggest farces in border history.

The Bush Administration and Congress have no credibility on border enforcement.

Show us, first. Show us some real border security. Then we might believe.

But still, some 5,000 illegals are entering every night and, as Harry Reid admitted on the Senate floor just 2 weeks ago, only about 5% of the illegals are apprehended/detained. The other 95% are getting in unabated.

I am greatly unimpressed by your exegesis.

Sorry, but George Bush and the Republican Party are going to pay dearly on this one.

They cannot dump 15 to 45 million Z1, Z2, and Z3 peasant laborers on the American public without consequence.

Your reference to Fred Thompson and the 1998 immigration bill is extremely disingenuous (there’s a lot of that coming from your side these days).

Fred Thompson did not foist that bill upon Americans, nor did he try to ramrod it through Congress, nor did he push it on four separate occasions despite overwhelming opposition from his Party or constituents, nor did he insult and berate them, and finally, he didn’t encourage Republican legislators to spit in the faces of their constituents in an effort to “show leadership and courage”.

These are all matters of principle and belief.

Well they are already supposed to be doing it. I have had to bring my birth cert and ss card to apply for jobs. Why not them?

That is one thing I never have understood. Since the 70s, I've been required to show 2 pieces of ID, and one must be a photo ID, for every job I have had. Supposedly, the employer can be fined for not obtaining such information. That has been law for 3 decades -- but apparently for Americans only. Sort of like the new that that requires actual Americans to have a passport to get back into the US, while illegals can sneak across the border and get amnesty.

With no job and no place to live they wouldn’t be here.

It is as simple as that.

We provide both. We can stop providing both and therefore the incentive to come illegally.

I am an employer. Any new laws should be focused on the employer, housing and providing accurate quick checks of legal status via the Federal government. It is crucial that an employer can run a social security number and know if the person providing is who they say they are. With a online picture ID they could. Then there’s no excuse for not verifying legal status.

Employers that hire illegals increase their profits while everyone else pays for their children's education and medical care (among other costs). The illegals pay in taxes nowhere near those expenses past on to everyone else. Employers that knowingly hire illegals are effectively stealing from everyone else. I have no sympathy for them.

Underneath it, in bold print, it said NO SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER NEEDED.

What's amazing to me about this is, the Patriot Act requires a SS# or proof legal residency (W-8) in your home country when you apply, or get a loan. Furthermore, PROOF of residency with a valid "ID" is required with issue and expiration dates!

My source is from working at a bank knowing what the BSA and Patriot Act require to set up any account.

I am not able to watch so I won’t be able to say how well he did, but he did do well on Sunday with Chris Wallace.

I will always support Tony, which doesn’t mean that I will always agree with him, but his ability to make his case without behaving badly is something we need on the right.

As for being defensive about the bill, I have been very clear that I didn’t like it but that the behavior by both sides on the right has been an embarassment. The leap that you made in your comment about defending the bill makes me wonder if in your concern about the bill, you can’t process what I am saying. It’s not great, but we don’t have a lot of choices. I am against the demonization and caricatures.

Yes, let’s have debates, but no namecalling and let’s see someone come up with workable and realistic solutions. It’s important to have debates, but let’s be mature about it. This whole namecalling business is alienating and it’s not just me. I’ve read from many who are fed up with the lines about traitors, el Presidente, just as they are fed up with lines about bigots.

I rejected the left for Groupthink, why would I want it on the right? If the right is telling me that I am free to do as I am told, that’s a great way for the right to marginalize itself.

And it’s getting more difficult to find conservatives who understand that no one gets everything that they want. Many have read Thomas Sowell on Spoiled Brat politics, but it’s sounding a lot like that on the right, and it’s bad for conservatism.

I am starting to wonder if FR and other conservative media is enabling conservatives and Republicans to undermine themselves as dissent appears to be not an option. If that’s the case, it’s conservatism’s loss and the country gets another form of Nutroots.

The single biggest reason why any initiative will fail is that there are differing assumptions.

One side assumes that you can hunt down and find all 12 million (or more) and the other side assumes that charging a $9,000 or more fine isn’t immediate legal status.
