Singing salesman makes Cowell's jaw drop
News.com.au ^ | June 14, 2007

A MOBILE phone salesman from Wales has stunned the judges of a British talent show with his rendition of an opera classic.

Paul Potts, 36, sang Nessun Dorma – made famous by Luciano Pavarotti – for the judges on Britain's Got Talent TV show, who are searching for an act to perform in front of  the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance and win $A250,000.

It was a daunting prospect, not only singing for a huge TV audience, but notoriously nasty Idol judge Simon Cowell.

But Potts, who has battled a burst appendix, a huge tumour on his adrenal gland and a shattered collarbone after being knocked off his bike, knocked 'em dead.

Wearing a cheap suit and with his hair cut too short, he admitted the judges weren't initially impressed.

But when he sang he blew them away.

I saw and heard it on Brit Hume. That was amazing! Idol does
not have music like that that I have heard before. At first I thought it was a gag.

When I was a paint room foreman I had a material handler who sang opera. It was X rated opera but those who know opera were astounded and said he missed his calling because they said he was good...real good.

This guy needs to lose his day job and should definitely be singing professionally.

Isn’t opera amazing. So many people say they don’t like it, but when you hear something like that, nothing else will bring tears to your eyes like it.

Wow...I’m in tears over that performance. Such a simple, unpretentious man with such a gift. He has received a special blessing from God with a voice like that and I think he humbly knows it.

I particularly liked the reactions of the panel of judges as they went from “Yeah, let’s see what this guy’s got!” to being totally blown away by his performance.

The fellow has a nice voice. I went to the YouTube site and listened to some of the great tenors. Sadly, this guy isn’t one of them. Also, there’s a big difference between belting out one aria and singing a whole opera.

Damn...got something in my eye...must be all that pollen floating around.

I would have never thought that I would like an opera song, but I guess I learned something new -- I still feel wobbly from that song a few minutes after the fact. A few years ago I started liking some country music, now I find an opera song I like...what the hell is happening to me?

“there’s a big difference between belting out one aria and singing a whole opera.”

Also a big difference in raw talent like this and one who has had voice training. Just imagine the power this guy would have with some training!

True, but when you take into consideration the resources this guy probably has compared to the great tenors you speak of, given time and training...who knows what could happen?

there is always a you in the mix to one up things. The lady judge right off the bat called him a coal headed for diamond. We knew he wasn’t a house hold name as you compare
We know he could be tho.

Wasn’t there an old joke that an opera is a place where a woman gets stabbed in the back, but instead of bleeding she sings.

Same here. Just WOW. If he can sing like this with no training just imagine in a few years. He's going to have people begging to train him.

Liked the first male judge when this guy said he was going to sing opera, like "oh jeesh" and Simon suddenly looking up when he started singing.

Absolutely amazing.

Loved it. Brought tears to my eyes, and gave me goose bumps. And I hate opera! LOL...

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a crowd go wild and give someone a standing O for opera, either. :-)

The man has a very special gift, no doubt about it.
