Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day

Fathering a child is truly a blessing from God.. It answers a primal calling, as it memorializes a man as a virile instrument fulfilling his destiny by passing his unique genic bloodlines on to the next generation. Fatherhood thus, offers a man a level of respect, and is universally recognized as one of his most important achievements.  However, is it really that much a personal accomplishment?

Proof of true masculinity however, is not to be found simply in the act of procreation, if you are looking for a title that carries some real weight, ...try being a real DAD....

Contrary to the hit most men are taking in today's mainstream pop culture, the overwhelming majority of men, more than meet and most, far exceed the duties and responsibilities of a real Dad, that being, provider, role model, sagacious, dependable, trustworthy, and most important of all,.. loving.

Formally, the honoring of your father has been traced from humble and heartfelt beginnings to the creation of the first official Father's Day observance...

The first accepted documented version of the setting aside of a special day for a child to honor his/or her father was by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, residing in Spokane, Washington. It occurred to her that a day was needed to create a special Father's Day. She arrived at this conclusion while attending church, and listening to her pastor's Mother's Day sermon in, 1909.

Sonora, having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after the early passing of her mother, she  wanted her father to know how very special he was in her life. It was her selfless dad that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in her eyes, a courageous, sage, and loving man. Since her father was born in June, she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, on the 19th of June, 1910.

A National Father's Day Committee was formed in 1926, in New York City, for the express purpose of creating a formal Father's Day. Their proclamation was finally approved by a Joint Resolution of Congress, in 1956. It wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon established the first permanent national observance of Father's Day which was designated to be held on the third Sunday of each June.

So it is from a grateful, warm heart of a child, we now hold that for at least one Sunday in June, our Father's will get some messure of gratitude that they and all good fathers should be honored with their own special day, just as we honor our wonderful mothers on her Mother's Day.

.. now try being a Dad

Is there anything more important in life, that a man could do that carries more of Gods blessing than that of being a DAD.. So today, as it has and will continue to be every single day of my life, I will recall the fond memories I have for the one man that set the bar so high for me to reach for in becoming what is the most important achievment I want out of my life, to be a real DAD.. God rest your pure soul my dear Uncle Joe.. I miss and love you dearly.. you were  my real dad... huggg....kiss

Hoosier daddy?

In all seriousness, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!! I will be calling my dad in about six hours. He's 2.5 hours away by plane, but that's still too far.

You know it’s a special day when you wake up to clear skies and the promise of sunshine in Eureka Ca where we have six months of rain and five months of fog and one month of something other than the above two.

My Father and I were not close as he had to work long hours on a farm and I moved 500 miles away after I turned 18 and graduated from high school. One of my brothers looked after him later in his life.

My Grandson graduated from Eureka High School Friday, the fourth generation on my wife’s side to graduate from EHS. His sister graduated four years ago.

I don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse but our son, daughter, son in law, grandson and granddaughter work together with us in our small family business.

My son is taking me to breakfast this morning and my grandson, his nephew, is going with us. I have always been close to my grandson and pray it will continue.

My daughter and her husband are going to church with my wife and then we all may watch the NASCAR race until five when we go the other Grand parents for a graduation party and dinner for Lucas.

It should be a great day...

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

PRESIDENT BUSH'S FATHER'S DAY PROCLAMATION

George H.W. Bush with his son, George W. Bush

"Fathers play a unique and important role in the lives of their children. As mentor, protector, and provider, a father fundamentally influences the shape and direction of his child's character by giving love, care, discipline, and guidance."

"Raising a child requires significant time, effort, and sacrifice; and it is one of the most hopeful and fulfilling experiences a man can ever know. A father can derive great joy from seeing his child grow from infancy to adulthood. As a child matures into independence and self reliance, the value of a parent's hard work, love, and commitment comes to fruition."

"Responsible fatherhood is important to a healthy and civil society. Numerous studies confirm that children whose fathers are present and involved in their lives are more likely to develop into prosperous and healthy adults. Children learn by example; and they need their father's presence as examples of virtue in their daily lives. A child's sense of security can be greatly enhanced by seeing his parents in a loving and faithful marriage."
--George W. Bush

My Dad has been gone for almost a decade now. Miss him just as much now as the day he died.

He was an Iowa farm boy who enlisted in the Army and fought in Korea. He didn’t talk much about that, but I have his photos from those days, and can see the progression he made from innocent to seasoned warrior. He came back with scars on his body, but if you knew him like I did, you can also see the scars that accumulated on his soul in the progression of those old pictures. War ain’t easy.

He made some mistakes in his life, and was far from perfect. But yet, he was a good man. I was one of the few who knew of the quiet way he took care of old veterans who had nothing and nobody. I’m talking day to day going to where they lived and making sure they had everything they needed. He did a whole lot of that.

He loved his grandkids. That’s another thing that is so clear when I look at the old photographs. So, the best thing I can do to honor his memory is to be the best Dad I can be myself.

He would be so proud of my oldest son, who just completed basic training and AIT, finishing second in his class. I’m darned proud of him myself, of course. There are a couple of pictures of him, including one with my first grandchild, on my homepage.

And so, the American story continues...Happy Father’s Day, Dad...

Thanks for the ping, Carlo, and I hope your Dad's Day was a good one. I was blessed with a a fellow who was good at many things but brilliant as a father. He passed on some years ago but he's looking at me now from the wall - it's an old sepia picture of a young cavalry trooper in breeches and boots. 1937. I see my own face staring back at me and I know I'm looking at a better man than myself.

It is the duty of those who come after to be worthy of those who went before.

Late in responding to your Father’s Day tribute but I wanted to let you know it’s a keeper.

I’m very familiar with the story of Sonora Dodd having been born and raised in Spokane. The community has always been very proud of her.

Also wanted to let you know I’ve made your “I love my chocolate with more chocolate cake for my wife’s and daughter’s birthdays. Two more daughters with birthdays coming up soon. Thanks for the recipe - it’s delicious.
