35 mpg on what, though? If they are required to be E-85 capable and get 35 mpg on E-85, that’s gonna hurt.

the first significant boost demanded of automakers

The consumer has been demanding cars that get better mileage and so far the Japanese have been happy to supply them. This bill sounds more like a problem for whatever remains of the U.S. auto industry.

California tried a similar requirement that dealers offer a certain amount of “alternative fuel” or electric vehicles. Dodge sold electric golf carts at the dealerships. Haha!

My 4x4 crew cab, 5.3 V8, 2007 Silverado gets 21 mpg at 75 mph on a fairly flat road trip. I was astounded at this, but can hardly wait till I can buy one that gets 35 mpg.

The Senate voted Thursday to require average fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon for new cars, pickup trucks and SUVs by 2020

Why wait so long? Why not just implement the mileage increase for 2008? Gas is expensive right now. C'mon Congress, if you can mandate the increase by fairy magic, then the auto industry can fufill your fantasy by fairy magic.

That's quite impressive considering the size of that engine. I'm getting about 35 MPG in a "mini SUV" (mini being the operative word) it's only a 1.6 engine.

... by 2020? That is essentially meaningless legislation. There will be at least 6 congressional elections between now and then. Seems any one one of a number of future congresses could just overturn this if it passes. However, experience shows it is usually difficult to overturn liberal legislation once it passes.

......hyde

also

you know they had this guy see back in 1952 well he invented this special carbuetor.....and it was connected to a big Packard.....and they poured a thimble full of gass into it....and it ran 50 miles on just that one thimbleful gas....but the big oil companys bought the plans for that carb. and then and then they destroyed those plans....
but one copy has survived and its hidden in a safe in ARCO’S basement. Congress knows they got that copy of those plans and now they are raising the cafe standards so BIG OIL has to
open that safe and start makin that carb. to end our oil crises.....cagey eh?

I bought a Camry last year. The best highway mileage I have gotten is 34. I thought that was pretty good.

These turkeys want 35. That would be great if they outlawed all big trucks off the Highways so they couldnt run down these roller skates on wheels.

Look for the death toll to mount.

Seat belts, air bags, side air bags. Nothing is going to help much when a dump truck with 25 tons of gravel goes over that Geo.

Why don’t they let the market set the MPG rate? Or while they are at it why don’t they just mandate one thousand miles to the gallon? After all the real goal is the destruction of what’s left of the American auto industry.

That's useless. Last time they did something this stupid, the 18 mpg station wagon was replaced by the 14 mpg SUV. Idiots.

Let the market decide - people that don't want to pay high prices for gas will buy smaller cars. People that aren't as bothered by the price will buy larger cars if they want. This is typical statist solutions to market problems. And these market problems are caused by statist solutions in the first place.

{by 2020? That is essentially meaningless legislation. There will be at least 6 congressional elections between now and then.}

They are just pandering for votes. If they wanted to improve the nations fuel economy, they could reduce the max speed limit to 45 mph. They would only have to do this if there was a REAL problem.

It’s all B.S.

Exactly right, especially that last observation. Btw, CAFE orginated in 1975, following a government-created gas "crisis." Same thing today. So what do you suppose will be the consumer opt-out on this one?

My guess is that makers will sell 18,550 mpg fuel-cell or electrics that will up the averages to 35.

I’m starting to realize the Rush is right. Gridlock IS better when congress can’t agree on things and passes stupid, freedom-destroying legislation. I remember when a coke cost 20 cents. Now it costs 1.25. It isn’t fair. Won’t they pass legislation mandating that coke has to cost 50 cents, and when will they start investigating the greedy soft drink industry? Those fat cats are making an obscene profit on sugar water.
