Free speech is no longer a right for students in this nation. They have become second class citizens without freedom of speech or religion. The truth may be squashed by puritan zealots that see free speech as a profoundly serious problem keeping them from the indoctrination of children. Jesus was annointed and no puritans will erase that fact from history. Puritan zealots may have won this battle but it will only hasten the demise of the public school system.

Schools can punish kids for expressing themselves off school premises.

This is a terrible ruling that basically asserts that kids are constantly on school property no matter where they are at what time of day or night.

Minors while at public school are basically under the direct jurisdiction of the government. There is no surer sign they are second class citizens. Public schools are their own little 1984. Of course, I’m the same age as the Columbine kids, so I remember the travesties that happened in the sensationalism afterward.

No, they do have free speech, but even free speech has it’s limits.

When you walk into a school, you leave a majority of your rights at the door.

This student was advocating an students perform and illegal action on school grounds during a school sponsored event. If he hung up a sign that said “Slit Throats for Allah Today” it would be no less illegal.

I don’t care what you may think about the legality of smoking pot, in the end, as of now, it’s illegal and you can not put up signs telling people to do something that is against the law at a school function.

He was off school grounds and not in attendance at school that day.

“Schools can punish kids for expressing themselves off school premises.”

Been doing it at proms since the dawn of prom. It was a school sanctioned event. Students have no right to pimp drug use on the school’s (taxpayer’s) dime.

What a nice thought.
Sit down.
Shut up.
Listen to your elders, RESPECTFULLY.

They tried this BS where I live. If my son for example was in a fight at the movies on Friday night, Monday morning he could be brought down to the principal’s office. Where he might get detention etc. Well I never heard of it ever coming to that. I believe in my town’s case it was because after school there would be big fights in the local parks. You couldn’t go to the movies over the weekend because of the behavior of the teenagers. It was a mess in our shopping centers with teens fighting and annoying the elderly. It did seem to make the teens think more as it has gotten a bit better. Since my town has this ruling or law I have never once heard of it being used. Maybe it was to make the teens aware that what they did on their time could affect their school time, I don’t know. I would have fought it had my son ever been affected by it.

Listen to your elders, RESPECTFULLY.

None of the "elders" in this case - school principal, USSC, Ken Starr - DESERVE any respect.

It is not analagous to prom which IS a school event. This was at a public event that students were encouraged to go to along with the general public.

The idea of Government Schools is extremely flawed and should be completely abandoned.

The Public School system was stolen by the far left and turned into a leftist, hyper-humanistic, amoral indoctrination camp.

The fruits of this coercive system has moved the country further and further away from the values of the parents and toward the values of the liberal and godless left.

The USSC ruled that even though it was off campus it was still school time and they still had the right to censor them.

Minors have always faced restrictions w/regard to their freedom.

A true leftist wouldn't punish a student for a "Bong hits 4 Jesus" banner. Rather, this is a government school vs. free speech issue. And with this ruling against a student who was not on school grounds, and on his own time, public schools just moved a step closer to being awarded jurisdiction over all time and space. Not cool.

“This was at a public event that students were encouraged to go to along with the general public.”

Who encouraged the students to go? Were they marked absent for the day if they went? If not, why not? The answers to those questions destroy your argument.

Back 20 years ago we were allowed to go to a appearance by then Vice-President Bush. Two kids decided they would get drunk en route. They got suspended. Not only did their parents not sue, the one I knew well was grounded for a month.
