LONG KNIVES OUT AFTER BORDER BILL ("It wasn't the people's will. And they were heard.")
NY POST ^ | July 2, 2007 | ROBERT D. NOVAK

Posted on 07/02/2007 3:24:25 AM PDT by Liz

I asked one of the few conservative Republican senators who stuck with President Bush on immigration to assess how Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell handled the issue. Asking not to be quoted by name, he replied: "If this were a war, Sen. McConnell should be relieved of command for dereliction of duty." Not only did the minority leader end up voting against an immigration bill that he said was better than the 2006 version that he supported, but he also abandoned his post, keeping off the floor during final stages of Senate debate.

Don't look too happy, do they?

Take this for what it's worth- an anecdote from a small southern city, population 16,000.

Local talk radio is about what you'd expect- mostly local issues... the school board, zoning, some state and national stuff.

Even the token liberals who call in usually aren't too bad, except when they regurgitate DNC talking points...

I have never before ( not even during the worst of the Clinton years ) heard so much white-hot, sputtering, stuttering anger over any other issue than this one.

I recognize nearly all the regular callers by voice- we have never had so many new callers, so damn mad they could hardly talk.

Their voices shook with anger, disgust, and revulsion that so many of our so-called "representatives" could act in such an insensitive, high-handed fashion towards the people they allegedly represent.

Will they remember all this come the next election?

I can't say, except to say that if they do, incumbents- regardless of party- are in a heap O' trouble.

Novak attributes the opposition to “xenophobia.” We’re all just neurotic you know.

Novak reaches a new low here:

“.. its opponents reacted to the xenophobia of their backers ...”

When you can’t stun em with the FACTS- go for distortion.

Novak must be willfully UNAWARE of what was in the bill- yet is only too happy to smear us all as racists. He’s an ignorant fool.

How Novak ever got a job beyond driving a cab I’ll never know.

Who can say with any seriousness that he should be a public personality, or that his thoughts merit publication?

Not only did he accuse voters of being xenophobic he said it would cost the Republicans the Hispanic vote. I would exchange that for the Reagan Democrats coming back.

Thanks for the realtime input-——underlines once again what I have contended from the getgo:

Grassroots opposition to amnesty is a rare consensus issue which joined together all segments of the political spectrum.

Too bad the dumbos on Capitol Hill failed to realize that salient fact.

Challengers to these dumbos need only mention “amnesty” to attract droves of voters.

“Republicans drove another nail in George W. Bush’s political coffin and undermined hopes for the growing, winnable Hispanic vote.”

First, Mr. Novak, George Bush does not need any help driving nails into his coffin. He has proven himself quite capable (could be hereditary).

Winnable Hispanic vote?

All of my adult life, I have been a fan of Robert Novak. But when reading this particular column, I am unsure if that will continue.

This is EXACTLY why I say that the so-called “Death of the Senate Bill” issues are, IMO, only temporary, will be THE most important issue leading into ‘08, and I believe that the winner of the primary and 2008 elections will be the Republican candidate who’s previous proven record and clearest ‘no amnesty’ message, reflect the STRONGEST PRO BORDER SECURITY, ANTI-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND ANTI-CFR/NAU position to the American people.

Since there is NO Democratic candidate who brings this to the table, if Republicans unite behind THE Republican candidate who does, we CAN WIN ‘08!!!

But we cannot push another ‘bush’ and therefore, that candidate IMO, can NOT and must NOT be another Open Borders Lobby...CFRer or NAFTApusher.

CFRers:

Fred Thompson
Rudy Giuliani
John McCain
Mitt Romney
Jim Gilmore
Newt Gingrich
Hillary Clinton
Barack Obama
John Edwards
Joe Biden
Chris Dodd
Bill Richardson

If you are aware of others, please let me know.

Couldn't capture the stack of Hustler magazines in there----for when they "deliberate."

Winnable Hispanic vote?

Balderdash.

The sap-happy idea that latin hyphenates would "go" Repub is evidence of mounting hyphenate insanity on Capitol Hill.

Moreover, to try to win reelection by corrupting the Constitution and undermining our sacrosanct rule of law is tantamount to treason.

That was the same in this area. Local talk was bombarded with talk of the bill. Known dems. were upset too.
