IIRC, Dr. Hupp's campaign for concealed carry privileges in Texas led to Ann Richard's defeat by GWB. The rest is history.

Our officers have a level of life experience which students can't possibly have at the age of 21 or 22.

Garbage. Training and range practice as CCW pre-requists would provide for the experience level and maturity that would have prevented a VT massacre.

And what of the 21 and 22 year olds currently serving us in the Middle East??? LEO bias against armed law-abiding citizens...

There is a unique satisfaction in seeing a potential situation, that probably is nothing, but might become something, and knowing that you have the means to effectively defend yourself.

The anti-defense people can never know this. It would be sad enough if they just left it at that, and exercised their right to not defend themselves or their loved ones. Curiously, they transfer their fear of violence into a hatred of even defensive weapons, even far beyond what they should rightly feel for evil people who do evil things. In this projection and confusion they seek safety and satisfaction in knowing their signs and prohibitions will make them feel better, which they confuse with real safety.

They would rather we all might be a victim than to allow themselves or anyone else any defense than being able to call 911 (and maybe die).

Bottom line: Gun free zones create victim zones, areas of defenseless sheep where nut bags or criminals have free reign.

Those pushing for "gun free zones" should be proud of VA Tech. They accomplished what they wanted! People were not afforded the most basic natural right, self-defense.

It was October 1991 when a gunman entered the diner ...

Recall he didn't so much "enter", as "drove through the window".

Some emergencies mean you need a fire extinguisher.. NOW.

Some emergencies mean you need a firearm... NOW.

The armed and well trained LAW abiding citizen is part of the solution. Not part of the problem.

SO frustrating.

"Our officers have a level of life experience which students can't possibly have at the age of 21 or 22."

That may or may not be true. Either way, it's irrelevant. It doesn't mean a responsible, law abiding 21 year old is not fully capable of carrying and using a firearm safely.

Baylor University has a dedicated force of 24 police officers who are trained and drilled to respond to a firearms attack such as that at Virginia Tech.

A whole 24 officers. Let's see 3 shifts, that's down to 8 actually on duty at any given time. Some will be on vacation, at least one will be at a desk. Say 7 officers on duty. To protect 14,000 students in dozens of buildings across several 10s of acres of land. The newest residence hall alone is 212,000-square-feet. Yeah, 7 cops are going to take *how long* to respond to a nutjob *somewhere* in all that?

At least let the faculty, staff and grad students be armed if they choose to be.

That was surprising restrained for the BBC, of all places.

I knew that they had to get their anti-gun message in somewhere, but they did hold off for more paragraphs than I would have guessed (unless I missed something before last 7 or 8 paragraphs.)

“My gun was 100 feet away in my car, completely useless to me,” she says.

“I was angry at my legislators because they had legislated me out of the right to protect myself and my family.”

That’s a good example of why stupid laws should be broken.

“Our officers have a level of life experience which students can’t possibly have at the age of 21 or 22.”

Some of those students he’s talking about are probably Iraq or Afghanistan vets. There could also be older students there who are Gulf War vets etc.. so is this police chief including those people in his list of people without life experiences?

I’ve mentioned this before, but I was talking with a police officer one time and mentioned about my 1911 A1. I had to explain to him what that was. People should not assume that police officers are experts in weapons. To be sure, there are some. But there are plenty of officers who don’t know a whole heck of a lot about firearms.

I’m pretty sure that I have a lot more weapons training and experience than the vast majority of police officers. I don’t need to hear their preaching on the subject.

In fact, in England going back 100 years, police men did not have weapons, but a lot of civilians did. There were a number of recorded cases where officers were chasing armed suspects and borrowed a handgun from a passer by. I think that was a better way for law enforcement to operate.

I just hate those those elitist cops in Virginia. Let's see: 18 to 21 year olds can be trusted to carry arms in the military but they're too volatile and lacking in life experience to carry on campus? We can trust our children to defend our country but we can't trust them to protect themselves in a situation of personal danger? I think that attitude is not only condescending, its morally wrong.

The police can NEVER protect you. Even if you suspect someone wants to kill you and you ask for protection, all you will get is that “No crime has been committed yet. We can do nothing.” All the law enforcement community can actually do is DOCUMENT THE COMMISSION OF A CRIME AND COLLECT EVIDENCE AFTER THE FACT. It is to late for the victim. It is the responsibility of the individual to protect himself and his loved ones. Laws that restrict the ability to keep and bear arms do nothing but imperil you and all you love.
Liberals place more importance on feelng safe than actually being safe.
