Tim Kaine's Legacy: Abuser fees for Virginians
The Ward View ^ | July 14, 2007 | Ward Smythe

Posted on 07/14/2007 5:22:50 AM PDT by Corin Stormhands

As of this post, the Petition to Repeal the VA "Civil Remedial Fees" for Traffic Offenses has over 66,000 signatures.

It seems that something has finally gotten the attention from the citizens of the Commonwealth. Much has been said about the abuser fees and who we should blame in all of this.

What is most odious bout all of this is that the fines apply only to Virginians. And according to The Mason Conservative and others, we have only Governor Gridlock to thank for that.

The Mason Conservative: How Tim Kaine Screwed Virginia

I went to make darken "and persons operating motor vehicles with a license issued by a juristiction outside Virginia." But lo and behold, it VANISHED. Remember, Virginia governors have a line-item veto, so Gov. Gridlock removed all references to out of state drivers with regard to abuser fees when they were included in the Republican House version.

You’re reading this right… GOVERNOR TIMOTHY KAINE DELETED THE SECTION IMPOSING FEES ON OUT OF STATE DRIVERS?!?!?!?!

Bearing Drift: Kaine reaffirms his support for “abuser fees”

Just a reminder for Democrats who want to criticize “abuser fees,” it would be nice if they criticize the guy who’s been pushing for them since he took the oath of office.

Ok, is it just me or does this sentence not make sense? Maybe I need more coffee.

It makes sense if you read his whole post. He’s going through the various versions of the bill, highlighting (darkening) the relevant sections.

When he gets to the Governor’s version, he can’t find the text he’s looking for that refers to out of state drivers.

That make sense now?

Yes, now it does. I’ve just never heard of ‘highlighting text’ as ‘make darken’.

Make darken? Did he mean make darkies? What is the meaning of this phrase?

80 Mph is legally reckless driving in Virginia, nonetheless there are times when the entire traffic patten in all three lanes on I95 is moving that fast or faster. Likewise on the DC beltway (495) which still has a posted limit of 55 all the way around. Traffic in the outer lanes is rarey moving less than 70. Be careful...

Looks like the people have spoken. Maybe the government should get out of the way.

It was a Republican who sponsored the tax increase. There's not a dime's worth of difference between the two parties in the Dominion State. They exist to fleece the taxpayers first and serve themselves.

We know that, and we're not letting them off the hook either.

But it was Tim Kaine that made the fees apply only to Virginians. And it was Tim Kaine who had been pushing for the abuser fees since he came into office.

Try to keep up.

And BTW, the Old Dominion is a Commonwealth. Not a State.

Perhaps the residents of Virgina have to take this abuse until the next election cycle. Those of us that live out of state don’t. That may be why the provision relating to out of state drivers was removed. Can you imagine what this would do to the tourist industry after it became public knowledge that some tourists received three thousand dollar fines for being caught in a speed trap?

I’m pretty sure the logic behind this was the tourist industry.

Our next election cycle is this fall. All 140 members of the General Assembly are up for reelection.

In an unrelated issue, this week Kaine offered the Navy ten potential sites for an new outlying landing field for Oceana’s jets to use. None of the county officials or residents in any of the affected areas were notified ahead of time, they heard about it on the news (or when the news trucks showed up for reaction). Way to go Timmy!!

That's a sensible solution (though I would allow for a few exceptions). But voters in any state (or commonwealth) are RARELY that sensible.

Sorry folks those fees are here to say...

Virginia is a B.S. quasi-fascist state ( I won’t call it a ‘commonwealth’—no apologies folks) where all the silly state politics are a vaudeville sideshow. Demogagic governors and grand-standing legistlators. I won’t even comment on their congressional delegation.

All the political crap between the two parties never touches on matters that concern the citizens of the state in the slightest.
Both parties are equally to blame and so are the voters who empower them.

As a citizen of the US who has to drive through this police state for work and faces the ‘ticket-writing-happiest’ group of state police in the nation I can say this...

Va. voters have made their own bed and are gonna hafta lie in it for at least the next few months...and as a citizen proud to have moved out of the “Dominion” I will not let those bastards “reform” their laws to include out of state drivers—I assure you the State of Mississippi will not offer “full faith and credit” to their $ grab.

This is what happens when literal minded jack-asses distinguish between the right of interstate travel and the right to drive a car—which of course doesn’t exist but-for the sole reason that cars did not exist 220 years ago...I believe they would sneer: “driving a car is not a right.”

welcome to Big-Brother.
