Two years after Hurricane Katrina blew through Louisiana, demolishing homes and displacing families, people are finally starting to make their way back home.
When the Guidry family first arrived in Killeen, they came with literally nothing.
"When you have no support, a situation can seem worse than it actually is," said Karen Guidry. "We were travelling from Louisiana with literally nothing, but when we hit the Texas border, there were people at a rest stop with sandwiches, toiletries, everything you could think of. Everywhere we went there were people helping, and it was truly amazing to have someone open up their heart to you."

Read in the Times-Picayune yesterday that, based on mail deliveries, they’re estimating the population of N.O. at 300,000.
Just 6 months ago, it was only about 160,000.
Yes, it’s noticeable.
Does this mean the crime rate in Houston and other major cities in Texas will soon return to its’ pre-Katrina low.
I hope so.
I haven’t noticed it.
As a matter of fact, the little Sun convenience store at the corner of Wilcrest and my subdivision turn-in (just north of Briar Forest) got knocked over a couple weeks back, and now it has bars all across the front.
Not that a Katrician had anything to do with that, I’m sure.
Not all people who were affected by Katrina were money sucking grubs. These folks at least said in the article that they were going home, and taking volunteering jobs until they got settled in paying jobs. I’m going to be optimistic on this family.
Likewise, my father in law, who while he does not live in NOLA, does work in the city (he’s a history teacher and coach at one of the many private schools) moved back to his house last month. The house, in Chalmette, was done for, but he rebuilt it...without ever having a FEMA trailer on his property, or begging the government for handouts.
I know the decent people who have worked so hard to rebuild don’t make the news often...it’s nearly always the scumbags. Just remember next time that there is...well...at least one decent hardworking gentleman down there. He’ll be the first to admit that the local government is corrupt as heck, but that’s his home, and he isn’t going to give up. I’m sure that he rubs off on the young men he teaches.
There must be a fresh, frosty cold supply of Heineken beer back in Nawlins.
There are plenty of NO people like your father in law, we have relatives there too. Unfortunately the lower end of the population got all the press and the money as well.
Not that I've seen, but I'm somewhat distanced from the city now.
I have not seen a difference.
Support is always available even if a crutch isn't.
Situations always appear worse than they actually are for that way ones is first in line to get greased.
Ohhhh.....that’s why there was a decline in crime.....
Few if any are leaving Houston... according to friends and family there.

Frnakly, I am glad to finally see someone say thank you. I get so tired of all the complaining and fault finding.

If you read the article, you can see that these are the type of people that is a loss for Texas when they go back to Louisiana. They are industrious and self-reliant. (That might explain why they can go back. They now can afford to move. Many of those that we wish would go back don’t work, and don’t save.)
THAT Article is a big LIE, no one is coming back now, the medical situation in this city is dire and it has stopped everything in its tracks.
Driving around the city yesterday doing errands I saw about five moving vans, two on my own street and they were all moving out, that is the story of this city now
