Some editiing was done leaving out a few of Mr. Ford's comments not revelant to O'Reilly's spin about FR.

Plus some comments throughout and a little "creative" editing near the end...

This all boils down to Bill wanting more controls on the Internet, something he’s been pushing for the longest time or in other words censorship...

I don’t know if Taylor saw this coming, but he did a good job handling himself and didn’t blow his cool. Wish BOR would mention the positive. The comment about blacks is something I’ve never seen here. I wonder if it was a set up to produce controversy because of the colour of the other guest? And like BOR should start lecturing when Geraldo isn’t even in the room! Sheesh!

That’s the first time I have viewed the piece. The Blowviator got the FR representative to apologize for FR being a ‘hate sight’ and not properly moderating comments? He ran over him like a mack truck. The so-called hate comments supposedly were picked up from today’s threads and nothing was said to refute Mr. O’s attacks. FR has been put in the same catagory as The Daily Kos? Fair and balanced...Good grief.

Yesterday I paid a quick visit to "Daily Kos" just to see how it stacks up to Free Republic from the perspective of it's emotive content. I expected to see a ton of vile language which I've come to associate with the ravings of the left - but didn't really see that (I probably didn't know where to look).

A big difference I did note, however, is that Daily Kos is really "in your face" trying to sell advertising - so one very significant difference is the commercial nature of Daily Kos.

O'Reilly was concerned that he found unflattering Photoshopped pics of GWB on Daily KOS, however I've been amused by similar pics here on Free Republic through the years as well (although the images I've seen on Free Republic, to our credit, didn't imply anything as vile as beastiality).

I came away thinking that we need a new word for what we used to call "hate". The jerks who insist on trying to control us seem to have co-opted the word "hate".

...The Blowviator got the FR representative to apologize for FR being a ‘hate sight’ and not properly moderating comments?

He ran over him like a mack truck...

As Rush posted after "Mr. Potato Head" tried to ambush Ann Coulter with a call from Mrs. Silky Pony:
...I know how these things work, because I, ladies and gentlemen, have been on these shows and have been ambushed too.  That's why I don't do these things, it's not productive...

-- snip --

...Look, it's easy, you go on television, you finish, and somebody says, "You know what you shoulda said," and sometimes I've resented that...

Kristinn may not yet be in the same league as Rush and Ann, but the fault in his limited exposure last night lies with BILL O'REILLY, not with our DC Chapter Warlord.

For a MUCH BETTER look at kristinn on TV, watch the video posted at the bottom of this post:

O’Reilly claimed that his staff found posts on FR staying stuff like “I hate blacks”, “gays are dogs”, etc. He recommended that every message on FreeRepublic should be pre-screened before publication. He also said that Daily Kos had an even greater volume of outrageous comments.

Kristinn reponded that those posts O’Reilly claimed to find represent only a tiny fraction of the messages posted here, that they violate the posting guidelines, they don’t represent the official position of the website, and that a staff of volunteer moderators remove those posts when they are reported.

Anyone who has spent enough time here has probably seen those posts on rare occasions, and they should be rightly condemned. But O’Reilly was trying to portray FR has a hate site by grossly exaggerating the number of hateful posts.

O’Reilly fails to understand that this site is not advertiser-supported - and moreover, he lacks a fundamental understanding of the Internet culture or technology. This site relies solely on member contributions, and operates on a modest budget that cannot afford to hire professional moderators to pre-screen each message. Furthermore, many large commercial web companies like Yahoo have no pre-screening function, and probably have a much greater number of vile posts. As disturbing as some of the occasional posts are, it would be more disturbing to totally shut down the free exchange of information and opinions - even the reprehensible and deplorable ones.

I quit watching O’Reilly a few years ago after it emerged in court papers that he was running around the Fox News offices telling his co-workers about his wife’s vibrator. A guy who would betray the most intimate secrets of his marriage doesn’t deserve any respect.

(Having said all of that, it would probably be a good idea to crack down more aggressively on rule violations - especially with a big election coming up.)

The posts in this thread that say that BillO doesn’t understand internet culture are exactly right. The thing is that neither do most of his viewers- the vast majority of them are over the age of 50.

What this is all about is simple: O’Reilly has found an opening to attack the democrats - the fact that they are going to the YearlyKos convention. For the last 2 weeks he has demonized that site as some sort of vile, kkk and Nazi-esque hate site. See here for more:

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/016025.php

But BillO is also concerned about appearances, so he wants to be “fair and balanced”. How does he do that? He attacks freerepublic, distorting what people find there in much the same way he distorted the Kos ste, figuring it is an inconsequential community of people.

He has no idea what he is getting himself into.

That’s a total smear job by BOR. He has to be pressed to provide the links.... it’s especially suspicious since he says the posts just went up ..... suggests a set-up, either by leftoid drones or maybe a BOR junior staffer who wanted to set the boss up for his attack-segment.

There’s no comparison between the constant stream of vile hatreds on DU, DailyKos, etc. and the occasional post (usually by a troll or disruptor) here that is quickly removed when/if identified to the mods.

I also did a quick visit to the Daily Kos. It was my first visit. My curiosity was perked.

I do see this as part if an effort to control the Internet. Since there are no such controls—yet—there is the method of media propaganda to poison the public against those who they oppose. The intent of the lies against the Free Republic may be to paint the Free Republic in the same light as the Daily Kos and other similar leftist forums. When you see Daily Kos comments about the need to hang President Bush for treason, statements that our troops are murdering and raping innocent Iraqi civilians, and photo shopped scenes of President Bush being fornicated by Senator Joe Lieberman, we have a picture of a forum gone wild. If mainstream America were to get a taste of what is going on in these leftist forums, they would get a bad case of food poisoning. Not here at the Free Republic. We have rules of civility.

The big picture is we do not want censorship by the government. I think free speech, even if it is hateful, should be able to express itself in the open forum. Of course, the same open forum exists for criticism and condemnation. And forums, like ours, can control how things are said. Those who don’t like the rules are free to go elsewhere.

That is one astonishing video. Bill O’Reilly came off as utterly clueless, although he does vindicate himself (slightly) with his comparison of FR to a true “hate site” like Kos. Personally, I think somebody hoaxed Bill with those alleged FR postings he was waving around.

Kristinn did a nice job defending FR, and I was impressed with his restraint considering he probably felt like jumping through the airwaves and strangling O’Reilly. (Ooops! Does that count as a “hate” posting??)

Approximately 300,000 people have registered with Free Republic and there must be an archive of about 96 bajillion posts. I have little doubt that somebody could waste a whole lot of time scouring the 12-year history of Free Republic and come up with a few deeply buried posts that are outside of FR guidelines and were missed by moderators.

O’Reilly did not do his homework. Period.

Kristinn, You did great. O'Reilly is a pompous ass. For the life of me I can't understand why anybody watches him. Does it not occur to him that FR is not a commercial enterprise like Fox News? What an idiot.

For what it's worth, I've been a member of FR for seven years and have rarely seen posts like the ones BOR quoted. The ones I have seen are almost immediately removed by the moderators. I'm sure they were plants by the DU crowd in anticipation of the BOR site review prior to the segment. It would have been nice if BOR had given Kristinn advance notice of the posts so he could have checked out the join dates prior to the interview.

He has to be pressed to provide the links.... it’s especially suspicious since he says the posts just went up .....

He didn't exactly say the bad messages were just posted today, he said that they are on the web site today. Well, this web site has existed for over ten years, and the archives here go back at least to 1999. There must be millions of messages posted here. One could probably search Google for any sort of phrase and find it here in the archives.

During the interview, O'Reilly did not permit Kristinn to see the sheet of paper he was waving around containing the purported comments. So, we don't really know the context of the alleged statements.

Here is a Google search of FR for "I hate blacks". In each instance that I see, that phrase is being condemned, mostly as part of a discussion about an article published at AsianWeek.com. Using Google to search DailyKos for the phrase shows a few similar results there. A Google search of FR for "gays are dogs" shows zero results.

Before today, when people are quoting the vile phrases simply to refute what BOR said about FR, the only use of the ‘dogs’ slur against homosexuals that I can find with a Google search of FR is from 2001 in a post that is citing what leftist Robert Mugabe supposedly said, only to assert that Mugabe (or anyone) should not be arrested over a free speech issue. In other words, far from asserting the truth of that phrase, the poster is merely making a free speech point about Mugabe’s own words..... if THAT is what BOR is relying upon this really is hit-and-run smear job.

From 2001:

The 77-year-old Mugabe, in power since the former Rhodesia gained independence from Britain in 1980, has denounced homosexuals as "worse than dogs and pigs".

The Dog comment was in the main area of the post also. In an article quoting Mugabe. It was in a post, the same as the I hate Blacks comment.

I do think you are right, he spun the words he used. He said "found on your website today."

I did think he said posted today, but I misheard.

Sly old deceiver ain't he?

“I haven’t watched O’Reilly in years. He’s just an arrogant windbag. It’s annoying to watch a person lecture someone with greater knowledge and understanding than themselves.”

Excellent point about his ability to lecture his intellectual superiors. Many pundits fall into that trap, and O’Reilly is certainly among that number.

I want to make a few points here. O’Reilly, if you find this thread, please pay attention...I don’t want my words distorted. Some of these points are somewhat nuanced, so do engage your gray matter.

First of all, my “most ridiculous item of the day” - someone who claims to be for “the American way” (perhaps I’m being generous to Mr. O’Reilly here) advocating censorship.

It is literally impossible (and in my mind wrongheaded regardless) to censor the Internet. The Internet is an international medium - who’s standards are we going to impose? I suppose one could try national filtering - that’s the equivalent of the Great Firewall of China. Is that where our “free” society is headed? I hope not. Perhaps someday even a “pithy” O’Reilly comment might cross the line...

That said, FR does moderate content in an effort to be a family-friendly site. That’s actually a dangerous thing to do, since by moderating FR becomes responsible for ‘indecent’ content that slips through. The Usenet newsgroups (for instance) have historically relied on a ‘common carrier’ status that assumes no responsibility for content since there is no editorial filtering. It seems disingenuous at best to go after FR for allowing objectionable content when it goes the extra mile at some risk to provide a ‘decent’ site. Wait, can I have two “Most Ridiculous Items of the Day”?!?

I would go on, but I’m wasting time on a topic that really doesn’t interest me much. I’ve tuned my last O’Reilly show on purpose.

Kristinn was great last night. He defended us well against Bill O'Bloviator who has no clue what goes on in these parts.

While we have plenty of pound the RATS unmercifully threads, I'm constantly amazed by the non-political threads ranging from why Firefly was an awesome show (thanks folks for getting me to watch it this time around) to mind-numbing physics that lose me after the first sentence and all matters in between. O'Bloviator obviously only saw what he wanted to see so he could play crusading TV host against the hate-filled blogosphere. He's a putz.

And that brings me to something that O'Bloviator has no clue about which made his comments all the more ignorant and self-serving: there is a strong, poster-enforced non-profanity etiquette on Freerepublic. Strong comments, yes. Sarcastic and biting comments, yes. Nuclear rants, yes. Double entendres and the like, yes. Profanity, no. That says an awful lot about the posters and the site.

In case you're wondering, this is a big point with me because to be totally honest, if it weren't for that etiquette, my posts would be laced with profanity at times because of how steamed I get over issues. However, I respect the etiquette and express myself differently because of it even when I'd like to just write ~!@#$%^&* and also ~!@#-~@!#$%. In bold. In 20 point type.

So again, great job Kristinn! As far as I'm concerned:

Freepers    1
O'Bloviator    0

My local station dumped Shaun in favor of O’Reilly.

That’s like taking away a bowl of boring gruel and replacing it with a plate of steaming turds.

After listening yesterday to O’Reilly defending hate crimes (thought crimes) I’m more convinced than ever that this blowhard is a fascist. The man is so insufferably stupid that he doesn’t realize that hate crimes are the legal contrivance of communists and Nazis in the 1930s.

Oreilly is about as quick on his feet as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.
The slow witted buffoon does some good things though, so we shouldn't be too hard on him.

"it’s especially suspicious since he says the posts just went up ..... suggests a set-up, either by leftoid drones or maybe a BOR junior staffer who wanted to set the boss up for his attack-segment."

IF the O'reilly show produces the links to the posts they claim they found(I read that they were going to on another thread), I would love for the FR tech guru to see where the posts originated from. IP addresses can be traced. It would be very interesting to see if they came from a FNC facility. Such a thing would be the best thing since Dan Rather. I'm sure they would have been smarter than that, but it would still be interesting to take a look at.

Thanks for the post. I haven’t been on FR as long as some, I became a poster in 2003, but I did lurk for a year and a half before that. In that period of time I have NEVER seen vitriolic speech posted like the examples he gave. NEVER! I have seen ugly things said but every single time that comment is removed by the moderator and if it passes the moderators eyes other posters make sure they address what that person has said. Thank you kristinn for being the conservative warrior that you are. :) You did well, sorry that BOR didn’t let you speak without interrupting you frequently.
