F.R. defamed as "Hate Site" by Fox 5 News! [FOX News' Bill O'Reilly started this B/S]

I was listening to the news out of the corner of my ear when I heard FreeRepublic specifically mentioned as a "hate site" about fifteen minutes ago.

Ostensibly the long report was about the Klan using the web to recruit new wackos. Then the focus turned to Casa Maryland, and their director who claimed that calls for his murder had circulated on the internet by anti-immigrant bigots. It was then that the anchor identified FR by name as a hate site.

It used to be one would judge the thread hijacking efficacy of a poster by counting how many posts into the thread before the hijacking begins.

Post immigration reform, hijacking efficiency is now judged by how many seconds after the thread is actually created that the inital response on the thread with the embedded hijack actually occurs.

The record is 8 seconds.

Free Republic is an excellent source for news and certainly NOT a hate site. However, I have seen unbelievably hateful comments over the years. Just look at any of the “Hate New Orleans” threads or the threads about Molly Ivins death.

Moderating is not a job I would want. It’s a hard and thankless job, however I think if we’re going to be honest, most of us would have to admit we have seen some selective moderating over the years. I know I have.

I consider myself fairly reasonable (don't we all) but I know I stepped outside the boundaries twice and had one post and one thread I created pulled.

The post I had pulled had to do with the couple in California that created an effigy of an American soldier in camos which they hung by its neck on the side of their house (up near the eave as I recall) with an upside down American flag under it, or something like that. Because the news article gave their name and town, I looked up their phone number and posted it with a suggestion to give them a call. Very bad. I did feel bad about that one. I just didn't think it through.

The thread I had pulled had a very revealing photograph of "Big" Dick Cheney sitting on a curb eating frozen custard on a campaign swing. At first glance you say "Hey...that ain't no ear of corn in his pocket..." and the thread was pulled. I think the sensibilities of the mod were somewhat offended.

Funny story that....apparently, the newspaper that published the photo did not even look closely at it, and after they had printed and distributed the Sunday paper, someone pointed it out to them. Shocked and horrified, they tried to pull back as many copies as they could, but the cat was out of the bag.

I found a copy of that newspaper in a local library that has a huge selection of papers from around the country, and that was one of them. Sure enough, the picture was there in the Sunday section, so...not wanting to let history pass me by, I laid it on a table and took a digital picture of the image.

I considered stealing the paper, but...knowing how deadly offended librarians can be, I decided not to fold it up and put it in my pocket...:)

When I posted it on FR, it induced such a lively and, er..."ribald" dicussion that the thread was pulled.

I admit, I was kind of proud of having that one pulled...:) Now, when I hear people say "Dick Cheney is THE MAN!" I can rest assured I have photograpic proof!

You know, I don't go to many sites, but occasionally I'll click a link here and go to DU. There are some really bad things being said at DU that would NEVER be muttered here.

Since I've been a member here awhile and like I said, I don't go many other places, I take personal offense to this being called a hate site! As if I would frequent a hateful site!!

There's enough real hate in this country without BO and others lying about this one. What purpose does lying about FR serve??

Jim, I don't think FR is a hate site. But the fact remains that you've got a problem, and you need to address it before you and FR end up being demonized.

FR has been mentioned more than once on national TV as a "hate site." Why? Because there are plenty of posts and posters here whose output would lead outsiders to reasonably conclude that it is. That's just a plain fact, whether you like it or not.

In many ways it's an image problem -- but image problems are real, too, and they lead to more difficult problems down the road.
