Census Bureau Asks That Immigration Raids Halt for 2010 Count

(EXCERPT)

WASHINGTON — The Census Bureau wants immigration agents to suspend enforcement raids during the 2010 census so the government can better count illegal immigrants.

Raids during the population count would make an already distrustful group even less likely to cooperate with government workers who are supposed to include them, the Census Bureau's second-ranking official said in an Associated Press interview.

Deputy Director Preston Jay Waite said immigration enforcement officials did not conduct raids for several months before and after the 2000 census. But today's political climate is even more volatile on the issue of illegal immigration.

Enforcement agents "have a job to do," Waite said. "They may not be able to give us as much of a break" in 2010.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman declined to say whether immigration officials would halt raids. "If we were, we wouldn't talk about it," Pat Reilly said.

"For us to suspend that enforcement would probably take a lot more than one meeting," Reilly said. "We would have to discuss this at the highest levels of both agencies."

actually, not a bad idea. let census bureau gather data on illegals.. where they live, how many they are, etc... then pass data to ICE.

if they start raiding during the census, people may be less cooperative.

Somehow, I don’t think illegals want to be included in the Census. It would make more sense to have ICE do the counting.

The Constitution requires the Census Bureau to count everyone, including illegal immigrants, in the census. The once-a-decade population count is then used to apportion seats in Congress and to appropriate billions of dollars in federal spending each year.

Political power gained by the population increase and a bigger share of Federal apportionments.
This is what the politicians and bureaucrats in power are allowing US citizens to be undercut, stolen from, harassed, and murdered for.

Why is it the Census Bureau’s job to count illegals? That count should have no bearing on the representation and benefits alloted to legal citizens. It seems to me that counting illegals is precisely ICE’s job.

So should the police stop arresting criminals because the Census Bureau wants to make sure then get counted?

The answer will be: NO! Or at least it should be. Immigration enforcement should be prioritized higher than the Census count.

Does it say that in the Constitution? I don't remember that part.

Extra congressional seats could be going to states that have the most criminal aliens under this policy. Not good. Not that most illegals would allow a census person in i’d think. Those folks ain’t exactly fond of government officials who aren’t giving handouts.

This seems a little fuzzy to me. Can some Constitutional scholars out there help me out with Article II, Section I and the Fourteenth Amendment? Is it really required that illegals be counted? If so, why don't states like Rhode Island just bus a bunch of people in for the count to get their numbers up?

Unfortunately the word (free) ‘Persons’ is used in place of ‘citizens’. It’s basically a head count irrespective of citizenship status. An serious oversight on the part of the drafters IMO.

Well they weren't perfect and couldn't foretell every challenge (Sorry Ron Paul supporters). Fortunately they left us with an amendment process which although difficult is probably the only way to legally deal with this issue... along with enforcing the law so illegals aren't here for the head count in the first place.

ONly problem - illegals generally avoid census taking anyway...

The point is - our own government is intentionally NOT enforcing the LAW.

Maybe I’m just an idiot...but why would I want to count non-Americans as part of the census? If the guy has a visa...it might be in the gray area where it makes some sense...but why would I count a bunch of Indian students at Auburn university who are there for four years and have them edge up Alabama’s population? Seems to me that we’ve got this out of whack.
