Rudy camp doesn't take Thompson bid lightly
New York Newsday ^ | September 2, 2007 | Craig Gordon

Rudy Giuliani invited his high-dollar fundraisers to a weekend-in-New-York-themed meeting this summer, and in between the dinners and the golf and the Broadway shows came talk of a man they all were watching warily: Fred Thompson.

Thompson's would-be presidential campaign was creating a buzz among Republicans -- particularly conservatives hungry for an alternative to Giuliani -- and people who were at the meeting said Giuliani's campaign team was relieved Thompson hadn't joined the race yet.

"They thought they were getting a break that he didn't get in," said one attendee. "They were pleasantly surprised Thompson hadn't announced, and that was July."

Fast-forward several weeks and the former Tennessee senator and "Law and Order" actor is finally jumping in on Thursday -- a full six months after he said he might run.

Now political handicappers are watching to see whether his entry proves to be a damaging blow to Giuliani's shot at the nomination, or a too-little, too-late fizzle by a man who simply missed his moment.

Giuliani backers, particularly in the South, aren't taking Thompson lightly.

"He's a Southerner, and he's a senator, and that gives him credibility," said Barry Wynn, a top Giuliani adviser in South Carolina. "He's certainly weaker today in terms of the level of enthusiasm of his supporters than he was a month ago ... but I certainly see him as serious competition."

Hillary and Rudy (two peas in a pod) are both fearful of a Fred Thompson run for the White House. If Giuliani gets the GOP nomination I fear that we will have a Larry Craig moment courtesy of the VLWC & Hillary's people.

Rudy should be scared of him.

I have no doubt it will be Thompson versus Hillary.

I sure hope you’re right. A liberal like Giuliani would tear the Republican Party apart.

...which is what the Republican party has needed since the Contract With America fizzled out.

IF Rudy gets the GOP nomination I’m never voting republican again. They won’t deserve it.

And I look forward to that race. I think the odds of Hillary beating Thompson are about as good as those of the UN suddenly deciding to unconditionally support the US in the War on Terror ;) We’ve seen what happens when the conservative base turns out. We’ve also seen what happens when it doesn’t. It’s the difference between a Republican president and a Democratic president.

If the Republican Party does something totally stupid--like abandoning its conservative base and its bedrock traditional values and principles--thereby splitting the Party wide-open,,,

then we DESERVE HILLARY.

Hillary and Rudy (two peas in a pod)

Hillary cleaned up New York, reduced crime, cut taxes 23 times, prosecuted Gambino syndicates, endorsed Robert and Alito and intends to appoint more of them, and led the nation in leadership post-9/11?

Didn’t think so. But Rudy did.

One of the many reasons I support FRed is his ability to counter a dirty, low down, disgusting, politician’s remarks/allegations, and lies, without stooping down to their level. A very good example is the Michael Moore video.

I really hope he sticks to his style and is able to overcome the enormous odds. Usually, in the past 30 years, the dirtier they are, the more they win.

BTW, 2ndDivisionVet, you’ve been puttin’ up some real nice posts this week, thanks.

Me, either. I’ve already decalred myself “undeclared”, LOL.

The only candidates I will vote for are FRed, Hunter, or Tancredo. PERIOD.

It doesn’t take an eightball to know the future’s full of surprises. I’ll be astounded if Clinton wins the nomination, and even more so if we don’t lose in 2008.

Are you kidding, there will be endless showings of photos of Rudy in drag, even more than here on FR! Not to worry though, Thompson will crush Rudy and everyone else. And Hillary will become just a disturbing memory of an old childhood bedwetting nightmare.

If you're REALLY for an inner-city, liberal, northeastern-corridor, gun-grabbing, gay-abortion-illegal-loving, Police/Nanny-state goon like rudy, well then...

You're drinking the RINO/demonRAT Koolaid my friend.

It’s going to come down to Romney v. Thompson for the nomination. I have few doubts.
